  • When a shock wave arrives at a duct, an impulsive wave is discharged from the duct exit and causes serious noise and vibration problems. In the current study, the characteristics of the impulsive wave discharged from a partial closed duct exit is numerically investigated using a CFD method. The Yee-Roe- Davis's total variation diminishing(TVD) scheme is used to solve the axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible Euler equations. With several partial closed duct exits, the Mach number of the incident shock wave $M_s$ and the distance L/D between the duct exit and a flat plate are varied in the range of $M_s$ = 1.01 ${\sim}$ 1.50 and L/D = 1.0 ${\sim}$ 4.0, respectively. The results obtained show that the magnitude of the impulsive wave impinging upon the flat plate strongly depends upon $M_s$, L/D and the partial closure of duct exit. The impulsive wave on the flat plate can be considerably alleviated by the partial closure of duct exit and, thus, the present method can be a passive control for the impulsive wave.

  • Two nonlinear κ-ε models with the wall function method are applied to the fully developed turbulent flow in a square duct. Typical predicted quantities such as axial and secondary velocities, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses are compared in details both qualitatively and quantitatively with each other. A nonlinear κ-ε model with the wall function method capable of predicting accurately duct flows involving turbulence-driven secondary motion is presented in the present paper. The nonlinear κ-ε model of Shih et al.[1] adopted in a commercial code is found to be unable to predict accurately duct flows with the prediction level of secondary flows one order less than that of the experiment.

  • Accurate simulation of jet plume exhausting into the open space as well as onto the opposing wall is of interest both numerically and physically; the latter, from a system designer's point of view. In the current work, Navier-Stokes computation is undertaken to capture the flow pattern of a supersonic jet impinging onto a rectangular duct which deflects the vertical jet horizontally. Of particular interest are the flow structure in the jet exhaust area, pressure pattern and the magnitude of pressure force at the bottom wall. Usefulness of present characteristic boundary condition applied at the exiting plane of the duct is demonstrated by capturing such complex flow structures for different lengths of the deflection duct.

  • Numerical investigation of a centrifugal compressor volute having a modified straight conical duct hill been made. Three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence equation are solved To avoid coordinate singularity at the central axis of the duct, multi-block H-type grid is generated on the circular cross-sections of the volute and stretched toward the solid wall boundary. We obtained numerical results with three different mass flow rates at the volute inlet, namely, with the inlet conditions that give small, medium and large mass flow rates at the outlet of the conical duct. Agreement with the experimental results is observed.

  • Predictive behaviors by the extended k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are compared. Grid dependency is tested with the H-type grid as well as the O-type grid. Computations have been performed on a circular-to-rectangular transition duct. The Reynolds number is 390,000 based on the bulk velocity at the inlet. The computed axial velocity contours, transverse velocity profiles, static pressure contours, peripheral skin friction coefficient, peripheral wall static pressure distributions and turbulence kinetic energy have been compared with experimental results. The computed results than those obtained with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Comparing to the computed results obtained with the H-type grid and O-type grid, those with H-type grid seem to agree well with experimental results.

  • Fluid flow in a rectangular duct for 90$^{\circ}$ bend elbow with the ratio of 1.5 between its curvature radius and width is measured by 5 W laser doppler velocity meter. The fluid flow is also computed by commercial software of STAR-CD for comparison between measured and computed velocity profiles in the duct. Reynolds numbers for the comparison are 11,643, 19,746 and 24,260. From the comparison, computation of principal velocity components in the duct predicts the experimental data somewhat satisfactorily even though those of minor velocity components and turbulent kinetic energy do not match with the experimental data quite well. K-factor for the bend elbow is computed to be average 0.086 while the equivalent ASHRAE data is 0.07.

  • Because of the instability of a flow pattern in the inlet transition square duct (hereinafter referred to as "transition duct") of a heat recovery steam generator (hereinafter referred to as "HRSG") in a combined cycle power plant, the Reynolds number in the first row of a tube bank is differs sharply from that in the sectional area of the transition duct. This causes differences in the heat flux in each tube in the tube bank. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions provide three-dimensional results for velocity, temperature, and other flow parameters over the entire domain of the duct and HRSG. A renormalization group theory (RNG) based k-${\epsilon}$ turbulent model is used for obtaining the results cited in this study. A porous media option is used for modeling the tube banks and the number of transfer units method is used for determining the heat transfer characteristics. This study describes a comparison between the numerical simulation results and actual design output.

  • In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are investigated experimentally. In order to measure wall shear stress and pressure distributions, experimental studies for air flow are conducted in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV system with the data acquisition and the processing system. The wall shear stress measuring point bend angle of the $150^{\circ}$ and pressure distribution of the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) at $10^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct. The results obtained from the experimentation are summarized as follows: A wall shear stress value in an inner wall is larger than that in an outer wall, except for the phase angle (${\omega}t/{\pi}/6$) of 3, because of the intensity of secondary flow. The pressure distributions are the largest in accelerating and decelerating regions at the bend angle(${\phi}$) of $90^{\circ}$ and pressure difference of inner and outer walls is the largest before and after the ${\phi}=90^{\circ}$.
