  • In this paper distributed models for simulating spatially and temporally varied moving storm in a watershed were developed. The complete simulation in a watershed is achieved through two sequential flow simulations which are overland flow simulation and channel network flow simulation. Two dimensional continuity equation and momentum equation of kinematic approximation were used in the overland flow simulation. On the other hand, in the channel network simulation two types of governing equations which are one dimensional continuity and momentum equations between two adjacent sections in a channel, and continuity and energy equations at a channel junction were applied. The finite difference formulations were used in the channel network model. Macks Creek Experimental Watershed in Idaho, USA was selected as a target watershed and the moving storm on August 23, 1965, which continued from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M., was utilized. The rainfall intensity fo the moving storm in the watershed was temporally varied and the storm was continuously moved from one place to the other place in a watershed. Furthermore, runoff parameters, which are soil types, vegetation coverages, overland plane slopes, channel bed slopes and so on, are spatially varied. The good agreement between the hydrograph simulated using distributed models and the hydrograph observed by ARS are Shown. Also, the conservations of mass between upstreams and downstreams at channel junctions are well indicated and the wpatial and temporal vaiability in a watershed is well simulated using suggested distributed models.

  • In this study, a new mathematical dynamic model of displacement sensitive shock absorber (DSSA) is proposed to predict the dynamic characteristics of automotive shock absorber. The performance of shock absorber is directly related to the vehicle behaviors and performance, both for handling and ride comfort. The proposed model of the DSSA has two modes of damping force (i.e. soft and hard) according to the position of piston. In this paper, the performance of the DSSA is analyzed by considering the transient zone for more exact dynamic characteristics. For the mathematical modeling of DSSA, flow continuity equations at the compression and rebound chamber are formulated. And the flow equations at the compression and rebound stroke are formulated, respectively. Also, the flow analysis at the reservoir chamber is carried out. Accordingly, the damping force of the shock absorber is determined by the forces acting on the both side of piston. The analytic result of damping force characteristics are compared with the experimental results to prove the effectiveness. Especially, the effects of displacement sensitive orifice area and the effects of displacement sensitive orifice length on the damping force are observed, respectively. The results reported herein will provide a better understanding of the shock absorber.

  • Combustion phenomenon in diesel engine is mainly governed by characteristics of fuel injection and fuel spray system affected by its dimensions and operating condition. Fuel supply system is consisted of fuel injection pump, high pressure pipe and injection nozzle. In order to develope the more economical diesel fuel injection system, it is in need to carryout the fairly wide range experiments, which is quite impossible. Therefore, theoretical analysis for the numberous parameters is powerful method in this case. In the present study, equations of continuity of fuel oil in fuel injection system are solved to obtain the flow and pressure variation in diesel fuel system affected by injection pump speed, plunger diameter, pipe length and nozzle opening pressure.

  • The flow field around a high-speed train including cross-wind effects has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial frame using the iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives, 3th-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms and 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme for the viscous terms. The Marker-and-Cell concept was applied to efficiently solve continuity equation, which is differenced with 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A C-H type of elliptic grid system is generated around a high-speed train including ground. The Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model was implemented to simulate the turbulent flows. To validate the present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at constant yaw angle of $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ has been simulated. The simulation shows 3-D vortex generation in the lee corner. The flow separation is also observed around the rear of the train. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

  • This describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows of fluid behaviour with free-surface. The elliptic differential equations governing the flows have been linearized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via a fully-implicit iterative method. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and interface behaviour was investigated by way of a 'Lagrangian' technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The use of this bulk-continuity relation allows the hydrodynamic variables to be computed over the entire flow domain including both liquid and gas regions. Thus, the free-surface boundary conditions are imposed implicitly and the problem formulation is greatly simplified. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions or experimental results from the literature. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.

  • One of the techniques to determine flood stages in natural channel is to find the solution of unsteady flow equations such as continuity and momentum equations. Since the exact analytic solution of these equations are not Known, the implicit numerical scheme is widely accepted tool for the approximate solution of equations. This technique is applied to the downstream of Daechung Dam in Geum River for the determination of flood stage for given frequency. However the flood stages are greatly affected by the method of reservoir Operation Method and Technical Operation Reservoir Method. Obviously, the Tech. ROM is found to be superior to Auto ROM.

  • This paper describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows with free-surface. The Navier-Stokes equations governing the flows have been discretized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via the SIMPLE-C algorithm. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and the interface behaviour was investigated by means of a "Lagrangian" technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.

  • This paper considers a pipeline conveying one-dimensional unsteady flow inside. The dynamics of the fluid-pipe system is represented by two coupled equations of motion for the transverse and axial displacements, which are linearized from a set of partial differential equations which consists of the axial and transverse equations of motion of the pipeline and the equations of momentum and continuity of the internal flow. Because of the complex nature of fluid-pipe interactive mechanism, a very accurate solution method is required to get sufficiently accurate dynamic characteristics of the pipeline. In the literatures, the finite element models have been popularly used for the problems. However, it has been well recognized that finite element method (FEM) may provide poor solutions especially at high frequency. Thus, in this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the pipeline and its accuracy is evaluated by comparing with the solutions by FEM.

  • The flow field around a three dimensional minivan-like body has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives, and third/second-order scheme for the spatial derivatives. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. The fourth -order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A H-H type multi-block grid system is generated around a three dimensional minivan-like body. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. The simulation shows three dimensional vortex-pair just behind body. And the flow separation is also observed the rear of the body. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.
