  • Large eddy simulation(LES) methodology used to model the isothermal swirling flows in a dump combustor and the turbulent premixed flame in a model gas turbine combustor. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. In isothermal flow simulation, the results was compared with that of ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as experimental data, in order to verify the capability of LES code. To model the turbulent premixed flame in a gas turbine, the G-equation flamelet model was used. The results showd that LES and RANS well predicted the mean velocity field of a non-swirling flow. However, in swirling flow, LES showed a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, and the central recirculation zone than those of RANS. In a model gas turbine combustor, the operation condition of high pressure and temperature induced the different phenomena, such as flame length and flow-field information, comparing with the condition of ambient pressure and temperature. Finally, it was identified that the flame and heat release oscillations are related to the vortex shedding generated by swirl flow and pressure wave propagation.

  • Asthma is one of the important respiratory diseases requiring home self care usually performed by commercialized peak expiratory flow meter (PEFM). However, this simple device can measure only single parameter, PEF, due to its purely mechanical principle, significantly limiting desease management quality. The present study introduced a new expiratory flow measurement technique by miniatured air expansion chamber easily installed within PEFM. Continuous pressure signal obtained from the chamber demonstrated an accurate quadratic relationship with flow. The volume measurement error was $<{\pm}1%$ well within the American Thoracic Society (ATS) criteria of 3%. Important spirometric parameters of FVC, PEF, and FEF25-75% were all accurately estimated with correlation coefficients > 0.95. The present technique obtains continuous expiratory air flow signal, making possible and convenient to perform spirometric test at home. Electronic interface capability would be also useful for remote asthma management.

  • A thermal mass air flow sensor, which consists of a micro-heater and thermal sensors on the silicon-nitride thin membrane structure, is micro-fabricated by MEMS processes. Three thermo-resistive sensors, one for the measurement of microheater temperature, the others for the measurement of membrane temperature upstream and downstream of the micro-heater respectively, are used. The micro-heater is operated under the constant temperature difference mode via a real time controller, based on inlet air temperature. Two design models for microfabricated flow sensor are compared with experimental results and confirmed their applicabilities and limitations. The thermal characteristics are measured to find the best flow indicator. It is found that two normalized temperature indicators can be adopted with some advantages in practice. The flow sensor with this control mode can be adopted for wide capability of high speed and sensitivity in the very low and medium velocity ranges.

  • Computational modeling and simulation can provide an effective predictive capability for the major features of the supersonic microjets. In the present study, computations using the axisymmetic, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are applied to understand the supersonic microjet flow physics. The pressure ratio of the microjets is changed between 0.2 and 1.25 to obtain both the under- and over-expanded flows at the exit of the micronozzle. and Reynolds number Re is changed between 600 to 40000. For both laminar and turbulent microjet flows, sonic and supersonic microjets are simulated and compared with some experimental results available. Based on computational results, two microjets are discussed in terms of total pressure, jet decay and supersonic core length.

  • Blood flow velocimeter is an essential device to measure the blood flow in skin tissue. In this study, we developed a high-speed LDV(laser Doppler Velocimeter) that has real time processing capability using a DSP(digital signal processing) chip and is able to continuously measure information about blood-flow based on a noninvasive method using self-mixing type laser diode. This LDV system has a simpler structure than any other typical blood flow velocimeter and is composed of new self-mixing probe, stabilizer circuits DSP board, and interf'ace boule We measured velocity of speaker-unit by operational frequencies to identify Doppler effect of this system, performed clinical experiment on bare finger tip and compared it with a commercial euipment BPM403A(USA).

  • As the size of ships increases, the size and output power of their thrusters also increase. When a large ship berths or unberths, the jet flow produced from its thruster has an adverse effect on the stability of quay walls. In this study, we conducted a numerical analysis to examine the impact of the thruster jet flow of a 30,000 TEU container ship, which is expected to be built in the near future, on the stability of a quay wall. In the numerical simulation, we used the fluid-structure interaction analysis technique of LS-DYNA, which is calculated by the overlapping capability using an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation and Euler-Lagrange coupling algorithm with an explicit finite element method. As the ship approached the quay wall and the vertical position of the thruster approached the mound of the quay wall, the jet flow directly affected the foot-protection blocks and armor stones. The movement and separation of the foot-protection blocks and armor stones were confirmed in the area affected directly by the thruster jet flow of the container ship. Therefore, the thruster jet flows of ultra-large ships must be considered when planning and designing ports. In addition, the stability of existing port structures must be evaluated.

  • Most multiphase flow simulators following fractional flow approach assume incompressibility of fluid and matrix or consider only two phase flow (water and air, water and NAPL). However, in this study, mathematical governing equations were developed for fully compressible three-phase flow using fractional flow based approach. Also, fully compressible multiphase flow simulator (CMPS) considering compressibilities of matrix and fluid was developed using the mathematical governing equations. In order to verify CMPS, the CMPS were compared with analytical solution and the existing multiphase flow simulator, MPS, which had been developed for simulating incompressible multiphase flow (Suk and Yeh 2007; Suk and Yeh 2008). According to the results, solutions of CMPS and MPS and analytical solutions are well matched each other. Thus, it is found that CMPS has the capability of simulating compressible three phase flow phenomena assuming compressibilities of fluids and matrix.

  • This paper studies the effects of the swirl for the variation of intake port configuration that is key parameters in the flow field of direct injection diesel engines. In-cylinder flow characteristics is known to have significant effects on air-fuel mixing, combustion, and emissions. To investigate the effects of the swirl flow, various rpm(250, 500, 750) and two different intake port were used. And to evaluate the swirl motion in the flow field visualization engine, steady state flow test was conducted. Helical port intake port and SCV(Swirl Control Valve) were selected as the design parameters to increase the swirl flow and parametric study was performed. In the case of non-SCV, intake flow rate and non-dimensional swirl ratio were higher than those of SCV for the swirl head type. So, we could strengthen the swirl in the flow field with the swirl head type and don't using SCV. From the results of steady state flow test, non-swirl head type has the most good advantage for intake flow rate, and also the flow rate could be increased by using the SCV slightly. The effects of the type of engine head on intake air flow capability are dominant with respect to the existence of the SCV. We could measure the qualitative grade of swirl by capturing the scattering signal of microballoon from ICCD camera in the visualization diesel engine.

  • The purpose of this paper is the study on the characteristics of an inlet system with shock/boundary layer interactions by using various types of bumps which are substituted for the conventional bleeding system in supersonic inlet. in this study a comprehensive numerical analysis has been performed to understand the three-dimensional flow field including shock/boundary layer interaction and growth of turbulent boundary layer that might occur around a three-dimensional bump in a supersonic inlet. The characteristics of boundary layer seen in the current numerical simulations indicate the potential capability of a three-dimensional bump to control shock/boundary layer interaction in supersonic inlets.

  • An inclined jet impinging on a pin fin heat sink is proposed and investigated experimentally. To investigate the flow pattern, flow visualization using fluorescence and velocity measurement using particle image velocimetry(PIV) are conducted with water. The jet impinges over a wide span of the heat sink with a large recirculation in the upper free space and occasionally with another smaller one in the upstream corner. Further, thermal experimentation is conducted using air to obtain temperature profiles using a thermocouple rake in the air and using thermal image on the heat sink back plate, with impinging angles of 35, 45 and 55 degrees. The Reynolds number range based on the nozzle slot is varied from 1507 to 6405. The results show that impinging angle of 55 degree shows the largest heat transfer capability. The results of thermal experiment are compared and discussed with those of flow visualization.
