  • T. Nakai, who wrote Flora of Koreana vol. II in 1911, cited V. L. Komarov's collections and listed more than 120 specimens with ca. 65 localities. All collection sites cited were described in the Romanized characters based on the Russian pronunciation. Therefore, it is very difficult to pinpoint those sites using the current or old version of Korean map. From this study, many names were reviewed based on other studies (both the Russian version and the Japanese translated version) and records (e.g. specimen label) and presented based on the current provinces with local names, the Chinese character, the GPS data and the first page of citation.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information for rational management plans for sustainable conservation and utilization by comprehensive analyzing the flora distributed in Yongchu valley, Changwon-si. The flora of Yongchu valley were summarized as 319 taxa including 93 families, 212 genera, 285 species, 3 subspecies, 6 forms and 25 varieties. The endemic plants were 5 taxa such as Chrysosplenium pilosum var. fulvum, Impatiens koreana, Lespedeza maritima, Thalictrum acteifolium and Weigela subsessilis. The rare plants were 11 taxa including I. koreana, Prunus yedoensis and Magnolia kobus. The specific plants by floristic region were 38 taxa including I. koreana, Jeffersonia dubia., M. kobus and P. yedoensis which are class V. The naturalized plants were 11 taxa including Solanum americanum, Aster pilosus, Crassocephalum crepidioides and Cerastium glomeratum and so forth and invasive alien plants among these plants was 1 taxa of A. pilosus. The target plants adaptable to climate change were 8 taxa including Corydalis turtschaninovii of northern plant, I. koreana of endemic plant, and Meliosma myriantha of southern plant.

  • The present study summarizes the occurrence, distribution and autecology of 12 taxa of the class Cyanophyceae collected from several swamps, reservoir and highland wetlands in South Korea from 2009 to 2012. A new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 taxa of blue-green algae newly recorded are described and illustrated. Anabaena koreana is similar to A. oumiana, A. spiroides and A. crassa in that the trichomes form regular coils. However, A. koreana is distinguished from these three species by the morphological characteristics of the vegetative cell, heterocyst, and akinet shape and size. This study considers 12 blue-green algal species, including a new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 species that are recorded for the first time in the Korean freshwater algal flora. Among them, the genus Nostochopsis Wood ex Bornet et Flahault 1886 had not previously been recorded in Korea.

  • Uchiyama, Tomijiro visited the Korean peninsula including Busan, Incheon, Nampo, Pyongyang, Seoul, Mt. Geumgang of Gangwon-do, and Jeju-do twice for his plant collections in 1900 and 1902, respectively. During his plant explorations, Uchiyama collected numerous specimens which were investigated and studied by T. Nakai (Flora Koreana I and II and other publications) and H. $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$ later. Unfortunately all collection sites were simply described by Nakai in Romanized characters, so that it is difficult to pinpoint those sites using the current or the old Korean map. From this study, many locality names were reviewed based on his own plant specimens at TI and literatures, and those were listed as the order of his collection dates. Based on specimens deposited at TI, only ca. 200 specimens were confirmed, although 1,674 specimens were listed by Nakai. Among his collections, 2/3 of his collections were conducted in 1902 and among them 41 specimens were cited as type collections by Nakai.

  • Vascular plants of Island Gageo in Jellonamdo were investigated 10 times from August, 2005 to August, 2011. In the result of survey, the flora of this island consists of 341 taxa totally; 93 families, 246 genera, 289 species, 7 subspecies, 36 varieties and 9 forms. Yellow-fruit bearing plants of $Neolitsea$ $sericea$ which were found in this island are newly named as $Neolitsea$ $sericea$ (Bl.) Koidz. for. $koreana$ M. Kim. There were 8 Korean endemic plants such as $Hosta$ $yingeri$, $Impatiens$ $furcillata$, $Saussurea$ $pseudo-gracilis$, etc. Also 3 Korean endangered species which is designating by Ministry of Environment such as $Osmanthus$ $insularis$ and $Cyrtosia$ $septentrionalis$ and 9 rare and remarkable species such as $Viburnum$ $japonicum$, $Asplenium$ $yoshinagae$, $Broussonetia$ $kazinoki$ for. $koreana$, etc. were found in this island. Furthermore, 11 taxa of naturalized plants (3.2%) were also observed in this island.

  • Paraphlomis koreana (Lamiaceae) was newly named and added to Korean flora in 2014. Paraphlomis belongs to the tribe Paraphlomideae, along with Ajugoides and Matsumurella. However, a recent study has suggested that P. koreana is morphologically similar to Matsumurella chinensis, making them difficult to distinguish from each other. Therefore, we aimed to examine the phylogenetic placement of P. koreana within the tribe and compare its genetic relationship with M. chinensis. We sequenced an additional complete plastid genome for an individual of P. koreana and generated sequences of nuclear ribosomal (nr) DNA regions of internal and external transcribed spacers (ITS and ETS) for two individuals of P. koreana. Maximum likelihood analyses based on two nrDNA regions (ITS and ETS) and four plastid DNA markers (rpl16 intron, rpl32-trnL, rps16 intron, and trnL-F) covering 13 Paraphlomis species and M. chinensis were conducted. Phylogenetic analyses concordantly supported that P. koreana forms a monophyletic group with M. chinensis. Moreover, our study revealed that P. koreana includes nrDNA sequences of M. chinensis as minor intra-individual variants, suggesting that the genetic divergence between the two taxa is incomplete and may represent intraspecific variation rather than distinct species. In conclusion, our findings suggest that the independent species status of P. koreana within Paraphlomis should be reconsidered.

  • This paper deals with floristic and taxonomic accounts of 47 taxa of the genus Trachelomonas collected from 58 waters in Korea. Of these, 19 taxa are added to the Korean Trachelomonas flora, and 4 taxa, T. curta var. reticulata, T. koreana, T. planctonica var. papillosa, and T. spina are newly recorded in the world flora of the euglenoids. Detailed description and illustrations are given for each species. Since 23 taxa are previously reported in the Korean freshwaters, a total of 70 taxa are listed up in the Korean Trachelomonas flora. Trachelomonas species are abundant and diverse in old or stagnant swamps or ponds, where is enriched with organic matters and nutrient salts. T. bacillifera, T. hispida, and T. volvocina formed water blooming in the natural swamps or fishery ponds in spring and summer.

  • Takenoshin Nakai (1882-1952), Japanese taxonomist and professor of the University of Tokyo, who was one of Korean flora specialists, conducted his plant exploration from 1909 to 1942 after he completed two volumes of Flora Koreana. His collections, which are currently deposited at the University of Tokyo herbarium (TI), are important research resources. Since all collection sites were simply described in his collection sites in Romanized characters based on Japanese pronunciation, it is difficult for Korean as well as Japanese botanists to pinpoint those sites using the current or the old Korean maps. No single literature has been available regarding his collection routes and sites, although this information is essential to current plant systematic research in Korea. From this current study, all locality names were reviewed based on his own collections as well as his written literatures, and those were listed as the order of his collection dates with seven maps here.
