Dam construction in a river can change its hydrological pattern and trap sediments, which results in ecological changes in the downstream. It is a common phenomenon in the downstream of dams to have decreased sediment flow and increased periphyton. Artificial floods and sediment application are suggested as mitigation practices in order to simulate natural process of flood; transporting sediment and sloughing periphyton off. In this study the effects of artificial floods on periphyton were examined by applying sand artificially and discharging water from a dam (Yangyang Dam, Korea). The study area has been suffering from turbidity problems caused by shore erosion of the dam. The accumulation of inorganic sediments and increase of periphyton on the river bottom are the major factors of habitat deterioration in the downstream reaches. Artificial flood and artificial addition of sand was performed in summer and the effects were measured. Piles of applied sands were washed off easily by discharge and it enhanced the periphyton sloughing effect. The removal efficiency of periphyton was 50 ~ 80% within the 2 km reach from the dam. In conclusion artificial floods and sand application can be a good mitigation measure for the habitat rehabilitation after a dam construction in streams.
One of the most difficult problems in estimating design floods is how to determine design storms. More specifically, the design storm problems turn into how to determine temporal and spatial distribution of the storm. In this study, Thiessen-Weighted BlocKing-type(TWBK) moving storms are suggested to resolve the design storm problems and their applicability is investigated. These moving storms are applied for 100-year 48-hour design flood estimation in Han river basin using a physics-based distributed rainfall-runoff model. Simulated floods from moving storms are compared with frequency-based ones estimated from observed floods.

About 74 % of reservoirs in Korea are older than 40 years and their storage capacities have been decreased substantially. As part of reservoir reinforcement, the dam heightening project has been ongoing for about 110 reservoirs. The main purpose of the dam heightening project is to secure additional environmental water, while improving flood control capacity by gaining additional storage volume. The objective of this study was to evaluate reservoir flood control capacity changes of dam heightening reservoirs for effective management of additional storage volume. In this study, 13 reservoirs were selected for reservoir simulation of 200 year return period floods. Rainfall data of 1981-2100 were collected and divided into 4 periods (1981-2010; 1995s, 2011-2040; 2025s, 2041-2070; 2055s, 2071-2100; 2085s). Probability rainfalls and 200yr design floods of each period were calculated using FARD2006 and HEC-HMS. Design floods were used as inputs of each reservoir simulation using HEC-5. Overall, future probability rainfalls and design floods tend to increase above the past 1995s. Control ratios were calculated to evaluate flood control capacities of reservoirs. As a result, average flood control ratios were increased from 32.6 % to 44.2 % after dam heightening. Control ratios were increased by 12.7 % (1995s), 12.4 % (2025s), 10.3 % (2055s) and 10.9 % (2085s). The result of this study can be used as a basis for establishing the reservoir management structure in the future.
The object of this study was done to assert the dietary habits, food intake, and dietary attitudes of 332 middle school students in a small city. The subject were divided into doe groups based on weight length index (WLI). Anthropometric data showed that the mean height and weight were 169.5 $\pm 8.2 cm and 55.1 $\pm 11.5 kg in the male students and 158.9 $\pm 5.9 cm and 48.1 $\pm 7.6 kg in the female students. The mean WLIs for male and female students were 103.0 $\pm 19.7 and 96.3 $\pm 12.8, respectively. Of the male students 27.9% and of the female students 32.1% were underweight, and of the male students 28.9% and of the female students 13.0% were overweight based on WLI index. Lack of good dietary habits in the overweight group tended to be the highest, the normal group was the second highest, and the underweight group was the lowest. The regularity of eating breakfast and flood prejudice scores in the overweight group were significantly higher than those in the normal and underweight group. With respect to flood intake, the normal group tended to consume grains, yellow or green vegetables, vegetables with light color, fruits, milk, yogurt, cheese, seaweeds, fat-floods, instant floods, sweet floods, carbonated drinks, and spicy and salty floods more frequently. The underweight group tended to consume meat-ham, eggs, fish and fried, stir-fried flood more frequently In dietary attitudes, the overweight group tended to have more favorable dietary attitudes, and the normal group tended to have negative dietary attitudes. The underweight group showed more negative responses to trying to eat/drink milk, yogurt, or cheese everyday than the overweight groups. It might be suggested that more effective nutritional programs should be developed and implemented to ensure good dietary habits in middle school students, including the overweight, as well as the underweight group. Further research on the comparison of dietary characteristics is needed, with consideration of the subjects WLI.
Urban floods pose significant challenges to cities worldwide, driven by the interplay between urbanization and climate change. This review examines recent studies of urban floods to understand their causes, impacts, and potential mitigation strategies. Urbanization, with its increase in impermeable surfaces and altered drainage patterns, disrupts natural water flow, exacerbating surface runoff during intense rainfall events. The impacts of urban floods are far-reaching, affecting lives, infrastructure, the economy, and the environment. Loss of life, property damage, disruptions to critical services, and environmental consequences underscore the urgency of effective urban flood management. To mitigate urban floods, integrated flood management strategies are crucial. Sustainable urban planning, green infrastructure, and improved drainage systems play pivotal roles in reducing flood vulnerabilities. Early warning systems, emergency response planning, and community engagement are essential components of flood preparedness and resilience. Looking to the future, climate change projections indicate increased flood risks, necessitating resilience and adaptation measures. Advances in research, data collection, and modeling techniques will enable more accurate flood predictions, thus guiding decision-making. In conclusion, urban flooding demands urgent attention and comprehensive strategies to protect lives, infrastructure, and the economy.
Benthic macroinvertebrate communities were collected from six different sites in the Dobong Stream in Seoul, Korea to investigate spatial and temporal changes in benthic macroinvertebrate communities in response to natural disturbances such as floods and droughts. We collected samples monthly or semimonthly with a Surber net ($30cm{\times}30cm$), and measured environmental factors, including stream temperature, discharge, width, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and pH at each sampling site. Benthic macro invertebrates were strongly affected by floods as well as droughts. In addition, benthic macroinvertebrate communities displayed different responses to the onset of the rainy season in summer 2006 and 2007, apparently due to differences in the intensity and amount of precipitation. Chironomids were particularly sensitive to heavy rain. Floods and droughts also affected the proportions of functional feeding groups during the survey period: the proportion of scrapers was high right after heavy rains, while the proportion of predators tended to increase in intermittent-type streams as the riffle zone decreased. Finally, although species richness and abundance were strongly influenced by heavy rain, they recovered to background levels for within one month, and varied consistently among stream types, indicating habitat stability.
Recently, it seems increasing trends that the design floods on the middle and small scale of urban regions and natural basins are evaluated with introducing to the concept of the critical storm duration. However the study of the critical storm duration is not sufficient and especially on the natural basins, it rarely performed. therefore in this study, estimated the critical storm duration and peak discharge according to the rainfall distribution type, the position of peak rainfall intensity, and the frequency on the natural basins were evaluated using Clark model and the influence of each factors on the design floods was analyzed with sensitivity analysis on the parameters of the model.
Since the industrialization spread out, the metropolitan areas of Seoul have been urbanized rapidly in Korea, without concern for the quality of further development and sufficient environmental management. Due to this fact, it has become increasingly more apparent that natural hazards, such as floods and landslides, occur frequently after the summer's heavy rains, and because of that, the scale of damage is getting larger. The purpose of this study is first to analyze the relationship between development and floods in the sub-basins of the study area. In addition to this, I would like to compare the influences of geomorphological characteristics upon the floods occurring in both the whole study area and the developed area in sub-basins.

In recent years, urban floods have become more frequent, causing significant harm to society and resulting in substantial losses to the national economy and people's lives and property. To assess the impact of floods on people's safety and property in Seoul, annual precipitation data from 1980 to 2020 was analyzed for return periods of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 years. A rainfall runoff simulation model for Seoul was established using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS models. The study revealed that at a 5-year return period, water began to accumulate in Seoul, but it was not severe. However, at a 10-year return period, the water accumulation was relatively serious, and inundation began to occur. At a 20-year return period, there was serious water accumulation and inundation in Seoul. During a 50-year return period, Seoul suffered from severe inundation in commercial areas, resulting in substantial losses to the local economy. The findings indicate that Seoul City faces high flood risks, and measures should be taken to mitigate the impact of floods on the city's residents and economy.

Flash floods are one of the types of natural hazards which has severe consequences. Flash floods cause high mortality, about 5,000 deaths a year worldwide. Flash floods usually occur in mountainous areas in conditions where the soil is highly saturated and also when heavy rainfall happens in a short period of time. The magnitude of a flash flood depends on several natural and human factors, including: rainfall duration and intensity, antecedent soil moisture conditions, land cover, soil type, watershed characteristics, land use. Among these rainfall intensity and antecedent soil moisture, play the most important roles, respectively. Flash Flood Guidance is the amount of rainfall of a given duration over a small stream basin needed to create minor flooding (bank-full) conditions at the outlet of the stream basin. In this study, the Sejong University Rainfall-Runoff model (SURR model) was used to calculate soil moisture along with FFG in order to identify flash flood events for the Geum basin. The division of Geum river basin led to 177 head-water catchments, with an average of 38 km2. the soil moisture of head-water catchments is considered the same as sub-basin. The study has measured the threshold of flash flood generation by GIUH method. Finally, the flash flood events were used for verification of FFG. The results of the validation of seven past independent events of flash flood events are very satisfying.
