  • Along with the development of costal engineering, various type of breakwaters have been built. The main purpose of breakwaters are to provide harbour protection against waves, to stabilize beaches against erosion due to large wave action, and to provide for temporary wave protection for installation on or under water surface. This paper an application example of PIV system for analyzing the flow of Floating Breakwater with double barriers. We introduce an analysis method to predict the characteristics of flow around the neighboring fields of Floating Breakwater with double barriers in order to develop a high performance model. Flow visualization has conducted in circulating water channel by a high speed camera and etc. Flowing phenomenon according to velocity distribution and flow separation around the breakwater with double barriers were obtained by 2-D PIV system.

  • A surface-piercing barrier model is presented for understanding morphological development in the sheltered region and investigating the main factors causing the severe accumulation. Surface-piercing structures like vertical barriers, surface docks and floating breakwaters are recently favored from the point of view of a marine scenario since they do not in general partition the natural sea. The numerical solutions are compared with experimental data on wave profiles and morphological change rates within a rectangular harbor of a constant depth protected by surface-piercing thin breakwaters as a simplified problem. Our numerical study involves several modules: 1) wave dynamics analyzed by a plane-wave approximation, 2) suspended sediment transport combined with sediment erosion-deposition model, and 3) concurrent morphological changes. Scattering waves are solved by using a plane wave method without inclusion of evanescent modes. Evanescent modes are only considered in predicting the reflection ratio against the vertical barrier and energy losses due to vortex shedding from the lower edge of plate are taken into account. A new relationship to relate the near-bed concentration to the depth-mean concentration is presented by analyzing the vertical structure of concentration. The numerical solutions were also compared with experimental data on morphological changes within a rectangular harbor of constant water depth. Through the numerical experiments, the vortex-induced flow appears to be not ignorable in predicting the morphological changes although the immersion depth of a plate is not deep.

  • In general, huge caissons for breakwaters have been constructed on land or a floating dock. In the case of the construction on a floating dock, a 4 step installation procedure is involved: i) construction on a floating dock, ii) transportation by the floating dock to an area near the target sea, iii) launching from the floating dock, and iv) transference by tug-boats to the installation site. It is especially important to pay attention to the dynamic stability of the floating dock against the conditions in the sea during steps i) and iii). In this paper, the static and dynamic stabilities of a caisson on a floating dock are evaluated based on IMO rules during the construction and launching of the caisson on a floating dock by using independent commercial S/Ws such as NAPA, WAMIT, and CHARM3D.

  • The characteristics of the floating breakwater is briefly reviewed and their performance is numerically investigated. The numerical scheme is a boundary integral method for inviscid potential flows, and various two-dimensional floating breakwater modules are studied focusing on the transmission coefficient. The general characteristics of pontoons is studied as function of mooring line stiffness, mass moment inertia and draft. Trapezoidal-, hat- and table-shape cross-sections are also studied with varying shape-parameters. The efficiency varies with changes in each shape-parameter and for some cases satisfying tranquility can be expected with even longer waves.

  • In this study, a new type floating breakwater was proposed to improve the capability of wave attenuation compared with the existing floating breakwater in Wonjun Port, which is located in Masan City, Korea. In order to develop the optimal design, many different configurations considering the shape and location of vertical barrier and horizontal plate were examined based on the shape of existing floating breakwaters in Wonjun and Tongyeong Port. The analytical and numerical results of the new type floating breakwater showed better performance in long-period wave attenuation than the existing floating breakwater in Wonjun. Therefore, the new type floating breakwater can improve harbor tranquility in Wonjun Port.

  • Marinas are often located in prime port side locations. hi Korea these locations are already developed and reclamation of the existing properties poses many difficulties and financial overhead. Also, to develop a standard marina in Korea with tide ranges up to 6 meters would require considerable dredging and reclamation works needing long lead times and large SOC costs. The Ocean Space's floating marina system is an independent offshore floating static level system that does not require fixed location breakwaters. The entire marina floats with the tide giving a calm consistent berthing condition for vessels irrespective of the surrounding tide and weather conditions. The floating marina system provides also for all of functions needed to marina comprising a breakwater to protect the vessels, the pontoon system to house the vessels, a dub house and retail tourism precinct, fuel reservoir and associated support facilities in a turn key self contained unit. The modular nature of the system will mean that initial demand can be met with simple units and then further modules can be added quite easily without the related expansion difficulties or infrastructure. This paper contains the main characteristics of the floating marina system and tire design process of the structure. The mooring, motion & stability analysis, the overall & local structural design and the mooring & anchor system design are introduced in this paper.

  • A hybrid element method is presented for two-dimensional diffraction problem of water waves. In this method, only a limited fluid domain close to irregular bodies is discretized into conventional finite elements, while the remaining infinite domain is treated as one element with analytical representations of high accuracy. A finite element grid is automatically generated by using Dealunay triangulation based on the Bowyer's algorithm and a linear system of equations is approximately solved with the ILU-CGS algorithm. To validate the present scheme, Computational results are compared with the existing experimental data and other numerical solutions.

  • The wave interactions with fully submerged and floating dual buoy/vertical porous membrane breakwaters has been investigated in experimentally to validate the developed theory and numerical method in the previous study, in which multi-domain hydro-elastic formulation was carried out in the context of linear wave-body interaction theory and Darcy's law. It is found that the experimental results agrees well with the numerical prediction. Transmission and reflection can be quite reduced simultaneously especially in the region of long waves. The properly tuned system to incoming waves can effectively dissipate wave energy and also offset each other between incident and scattered waves using its hydro-elasticity and geometry.

  • The wave runup height is one of the most important parameters for affecting the design of coastal structures such as dikes, revetments, and breakwaters. In this study, SWASH (Zijlema et al., 2011), a non-hydrostatic pressure numerical model, was used to analyze the effect of reducing The wave runup height of solitary waves by submerged and floating rectangular obstacles. It was confirmed that the SWASH model reproduces the propagation, breaking, and runup of solitary waves quite well. In addition, it was confirmed that the wave deformation of the solitary wave by submerged and floating rectangular obstacles was well reproduced. Finally, we conducted an examination of the effect of reducing the runup height of submerged and floating rectangular obstacles. Reduced runup heights are calculated and the characteristics of runup height reduction according to the dimensions of the obstacle were analyzed. The energy attenuation effect of the floating obstacle is greater than the submerged obstacle, and it is shown to be more effective in reducing the runup height.
