Noise-Resistant Visible Light Communications Using Subpulse-VPPM (Subpulse-VPPM 변조를 이용한 잡음에 강한 가시광통신)

  • If visible light communication is to be used against large background noise in indoor environment, low frequency noise should be avoided. To maintain the advantages of LED lighting while transmitting signals, LEDs should be dimmable and free from flickering effect. In this paper, the spectrum of transmission signal is shifted toward high frequency for this purpose. Specifically, we propose a subpulse-VPPM scheme, which can be designed using only digital components, and we implement a test-bed for performance measurement.

  • Visible-infrared image fusion is a process of synthesizing an infrared image and a visible image into a fused image. This process synthesizes the complementary advantages of both images. The infrared image is able to capture a target object in dark or foggy environments. However, the utility of the infrared image is hindered by the blurry appearance of objects. On the other hand, the visible image clearly shows an object under normal lighting conditions, but it is not ideal in dark or foggy environments. In this paper, we propose a multi-guided filter and a real-time image fusion method. The proposed multi-guided filter is a modification of the guided filter for multiple guidance images. Using this filter, we propose a real-time image fusion method. The speed of the proposed fusion method is much faster than that of conventional image fusion methods. In an experiment, we compare the proposed method and the conventional methods in terms of quantity, quality, fusing speed, and flickering artifacts. The proposed method synthesizes 57.93 frames per second for an image size of $320{\times}270$. Based on our experiments, we confirmed that the proposed method is able to perform real-time processing. In addition, the proposed method synthesizes flicker-free video.

  • This paper presents a method to generate stained-glass animation from video inputs. The method initially segments an input video volume into several regions considered as fragments of glass by mean-shift segmentation. However, the segmentation predominantly results in over-segmentation, causing several tiny segments in a highly textured area. In practice, assembling significantly tiny or large glass fragments is avoided to ensure architectural stability in stained glass manufacturing. Therefore, we use low-frequency components in the segmentation to prevent over-segmentation and subdivide segmented regions that are oversized. The subdividing must be coherent between adjacent frames to prevent temporal artefacts, such as flickering and the shower door effect. To temporally subdivide regions coherently, we obtain a panoramic image from the segmented regions in input frames, subdivide it using a weighted Voronoi diagram, and thereafter project the subdivided regions onto the input frames. To render stained glass fragment for each coherent region, we determine the optimal match glass fragment for the region from a dataset consisting of real stained-glass fragment images and transfer its color and texture to the region. Finally, applying lead came at the boundary of the regions in each frame yields temporally coherent stained-glass animation.

  • In this paper, we present a simple classification model based on statistical features and demonstrate the successful implementation of a brain-computer interface (BCI) based light on/off control system. This research shows study and development of light on/off control system based on BCI technology, which allows the users to control switching a lamp using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The logistic regression algorithm is used for classification of the EEG signal to convert it into light on, light off control commands. Training data were collected using 14-channel BCI system which records the brain signals of participants watching a screen with flickering lights and saves the data into .csv file for future analysis. After extracting a number of features from the data and performing classification using logistic regression, we created commands to switch on a physical lamp and tested it in a real environment. Logistic regression allowed us to quite accurately classify the EEG signals based on the user's mental state and we were able to classify the EEG signals with 82.5% accuracy, producing reliable commands for turning on and off the light.

A Quadtree-based Disparity Estimation for 3D Intermediate View Synthesis (3차원 중간영상의 합성을 위한 쿼드트리기반 변이추정 방법)

  • In stereoscopic or multi-view three dimensional display systems, the synthesis of intermediate sequences is inevitably needed to assure look-around capability and continuous motion parallax so that it could enhance comfortable 3D perception. The quadtree-based disparity estimation is one of the most remarkable methods for synthesis of Intermediate sequences due to the simplicity of its algorithm and hardware implementation. In this paper, we propose two ideas in order to reduce the annoying flicker at the object boundaries of synthesized intermediate sequences by quadtree-based disparity estimation. First, new split-scheme provides more consistent auadtree-splitting during the disparity estimation. Secondly, adaptive temporal smoothing using correlation between present frame and previous one relieves error of disparity estimation. Two proposed Ideas are tested by using several stereoscopic sequences, and the annoying flickering is remarkably reduced by them.

A Best View Selection Method in Videos of Interested Player Captured by Multiple Cameras (다중 카메라로 관심선수를 촬영한 동영상에서 베스트 뷰 추출방법)

  • In recent years, the number of video cameras that are used to record and broadcast live sporting events has increased, and selecting the shots with the best view from multiple cameras has been an actively researched topic. Existing approaches have assumed that the background in video is fixed. However, this paper proposes a best view selection method for cases in which the background is not fixed. In our study, an athlete of interest was recorded in video during motion with multiple cameras. Then, each frame from all cameras is analyzed for establishing rules to select the best view. The frames were selected using our system and are compared with what human viewers have indicated as being the most desirable. For the evaluation, we asked each of 20 non-specialists to pick the best and worst views. The set of the best views that were selected the most coincided with 54.5% of the frame selection using our proposed method. On the other hand, the set of views most selected as worst through human selection coincided with 9% of best view shots selected using our method, demonstrating the efficacy of our proposed method.

The Effects of Carbon Dioxide as Additives on Soot Formatio in Jet Diffusion Flames (제트확산화염에서 이산화탄소의 첨가가 매연생성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of carbon dioxide addition on soot formation was investigated in jet diffusion flames in coflow. Flame temperature were measured with R-type thermocouple and the boundary temperature between blue and yellow flame was confirmed. Light-extinction method was introduced for the relative soot density (1-I/$I_0$) in the in-flame region. He-Ne laser with wave length at 632.8 nm was used for the light source, and the signal attenuated by absorption and scattering was detected directly. Oxidizer velocity effect on soot formation was studied to know that the thermal influence for soot formation. The results showed that the temperature of both blue and yellow flame were decreased according to the dilution of carbon dioxide but boundary temperature was nearly constant. The relative soot density was lower when carbon dioxide was added in oxidizer stream and oxidizer velocity increased. These were caused by the reduction of flame temperature and shorter residence time for soot growth. Also carbon dioxide addition enhanced the instability of jet flames like flickering, so the flame length was a little longer than pure ethylene/air flame.

A Design of Embedded LED Display Board Module and Control Unit which the Placement of Pixels is Free (픽셀 배치가 자유로운 임베디드 LED 전광판 모듈 및 제어장치 설계)

  • In this paper, we installed three high brightness red, green, and blue LED in one socket and made one pixel unit. And we also developed the full-color display board module and control unit which can express various images such as text, graphics, video image with the combination of pixel units and a number of modules. LED display driver module have a driver circuit within the combination of the RGB pixel dot on unit area. These modules of the existing form can be high priced because of implementation a fixed resolution in specific space and installation space. To overcome these shortcomings, we developed a LED driver and LED pixel modules free in array at random pitch intervals. Display board module of this paper enabled to display smoothly video image which have many data processing quantity through dragging data speed up 36 frames per second. Also there are an effect which is provided more clear image because of improving the flickering of the existing display board.

Development of bicycle device to strengthen safety (안전 강화를 위한 자전거 장치 개발)

  • With the growing number of people using bicycle, the number of bicycle accidents also has been increasing. It is said that bicycle accident can be reduced up to 11%~44% when riding a bicycle if LED light is used. The headlight of the bicycle makes exposure effect to the opposite side of bike rider while taillight makes exposure effect to the rear bike rider for improving safety. Bicycle safety device capable of displaying a change of direction by LED is implemented in this study in response to control button signal. This signal makes LED light which is installed in pedal and wheel of bicycle as a module type emitting or flickering during the fixed hour. Bicycle auxiliary device in pedal which is able to improve safety using LED when bikers are riding a bike at night is developed in this study. Bicycle safety device applying wireless communication technology will be expected alternative technology in the future to solve a social problem such as energy, environment, and safety.

Reducing the Effects of Noise Light in A Visible Light Communication System Using Orthogonal Polarizers (가시 광통신에서 직교 편광기를 이용한 잡음광의 영향 감소)

  • In this paper, we reduced the optical noise interference using polarizers in a visible light communication system. In a transmitter, two light-emitting diodes(LEDs) are modulated synchronously by the original and the reversed signals of the transmitted data, and the two LED lights are radiated through orthogonal polarizers. In a receiver, two optical signals are detected through orthogonal polarizers and differentially amplified to remove the optical noise. In an environment that noise light from a fluorescent lamp is much stronger than the signal, the receiver with orthogonal polarizers removed the 120 Hz noise, and synchronous light transmission of the original and the reversed signals using two LEDs reduced the illumination flickering to about one-eighth that using one LED.
