Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are advanced materials which combine the characteristics of the light weight, high stiffness and strength. For those reasons, the use of the unidirectional CFRP has increased in jet fighters, aerospace structures. However, unidirectional CFRP composites have a lot of problems, especially delamination, compared with traditional materials such as steels and aluminums, and so forth. Therefore, the interlaminar fracture toughness for a laminate CFRP composite is very important. In this study, The mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was measured by using center notched flexure(CNF) test specimen. The CNF specimens using unidirectional carbon prepreg were fabricated by a hot-press with the gage pressure and temperature controller. And three kinds of a/L ratio was applied to these specimens. Here, we discuss the relations of the crack growth and the mode II interlaminar fracture under the four point bending CNF test. From the results, we shows that mode II interlaminar was occurred when the more $a_0$/L ratio, the less load. And $G_{IIC}$ also were obtained as 5.33, 2.9 and $0.58kJ/m^2$ according to $a_0$/L ratio=0.2, 0.3 and 0.4.

An aircraft wing or fuselage panel of skin-stringer assembly can fail in a variety of instable modes under compression loads. Instability modes can be buckling of the panel, local buckling of the stringer, flexure, torsion, wrinkle and combined flexural/torsional buckling of the panel assembly. Although researches on these buckling behaviors have been carried out for a long time, there are some difficulties to apply to the practice because of complex theoretical and empirical equations. Accordingly, It is well known that leading aerospace companies are using their own in-house programs for the convenience of practical usage, but our domestic situation is that no such program has been ever developed. In this study a comprehensive program has been developed, which can identify the instability modes and the magnitude of reserve factor of the modes for the skin/stringer panel assembly under compression load. The developed program is based on the theory manual of the Airbus program APA114. For the verification, calculation of the instable reserve factors for the A320 wing panel and A380 low wing panel sections were carried out and compared with results by APA114.

Structural properties of reinforced concrete, such as bond and shear strength, that depend on the tensile properties of concrete are much lower for high-strength concrete than would be expected based on relationships developed for normal-strength concretes. To determine the reason for this behavior, studies at the University of Kansas have addressed the effects of aggregate type, water-cementitious material ratio, and age on the mechanical and fracture properties of normal and high-strength concretes. The relationships between compressive strength, flexural strength, and fracture properties were studied. At the time of test, concrete ranged in age from 5 to 180 days. Water-cementitious material ratios ranged from 0.24 to 0.50, producing compressive strengths between 20 MPa(2, 920 psi) and 99 MPa(14, 320psi). Mixes contained either basalt or crushed limestone aggregate, with maximum sizes of 12mm(1/2in). or 19mm(3/4in). The tests demonstrate that the higher quality basalt coarse aggregate provides higher strengths in compression than limestone only for the high-strength concrete, but measurably higher strengths in flexure, and significantly higher fracture energies than the limestone coarse aggregate at all water-cementitious material ratios and ages. Compressive strength, water-cementitious material ratio, and age have no apparent relationship with fracture energy, which is principally governed by coarse aggregate properties. The peak bending stress in the fracture test is linearly related to flexural strength. Overall, as concrete strength increases, the amount of energy stored in the material at the peak tensile load increases, but the ability of the material to dissipate energy remains nearly constant. This suggests that, as higher strength cementitious materials are placed in service, the probability of nonductile failures will measurably increase. Both research and educational effort will be needed to develop strategies to limit the probability of brittle failures and inform the design community of the nature of the problems associated with high-strength concrete.
Coating is one of the methods used to solve the problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures. There are few research reported in the literature regarding the effect of zinc-coating on flexural behavior compared to epoxy coating. The objective of this study was to determine whether zinc-coated rebar adversely affects flexural behavior. Concrete beams reinforced with black or zinc-coated steel were tested in flexure. The test variables included the presence of rebar surface coating with zinc, steel ratio used and cover depth. The study concentrated on comparing crack pattern, crack width, deflection and strain. The ultimate flexural capacity of beams reinforced with zinc-coated bars was not different from that of black steel reinforced beams. The results from deflection and crack width measurements were indicative of no significant variation for the different rebar surface conditions. In addition, it was found that load-strain curve of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel was similar to that of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel. Therefore, the test results indicated that the use of zinc-coated rebar had no adverse effect on flexural behavior compared to the use of black rebar.

Compression stress block used to concrete structure design substitutes equivalent triangle, rectangle, trapezoid and parabola-rectangle stress block for actual concrete stress distribution. Its shape is different in design code of the major advanced countries. It reflects the material feature of each of country. Presently, compression stress block of korea concrete design code is equal to it of ACI code that doesn't reflect the material feature of the high strength concrete. So, many research conclusions showed that it is not reasonable. The study compares concrete stress blocks of the major advanced countries and does an experiment on concrete compression stress block to know the material feature of the concrete in korea. It obtains the operating load and the concrete strain in experiment and draw stress block parameters. It compares stress block parameters applied to design code with those by the experiment conclusion. In addition, It compares and analyses nominal axial force-moment diagram by the stress block of the major advanced countries.

Concrete-filled steel columns consist of circular, square or rectangular hollow sections filled concrete. Much research has studied for the behavior of concrete-filled steel structures. The advantages from structural point of view are the triaxial confinement of the concrete within the section, and the fire resistance of the column which largely depends on the residual capacity of the concrete core. The axial capacity of a concrete-filled rectangular or circular section is enhanced by the confining effect of the steel section on the concrete which depends in the magnitude on the shape of the section and the length of the column. Buckling tends to reduce the benefit of confinement on the squash load as the column slenderness increases. In circular sections it is possible to develop the cylinder strength of the concrete. When compare with reinforced concrete columns, the concrete-filled composite column possesses much better strength and ductility in shear and generally in flexure also. Many researches are being conducted about concrete filled steel column to get these advantages in building design. In this paper it is provided to the basic experimental study of compression behavior of the circular and rectangular tubular steel pipe filled with concrete.

Recently, performance-based analysis/design methods such as the capacity spectrum method and the direct displacement-based design method were developed. In these methods, estimation of energy dissipation capacity of RC structures depends on empirical equations which are not sufficiently accurate, On the other hand, in a recent study, a simplified method for evaluating energy dissipation capacity was developed. In the present study, based on the evaluation method, a new seismic design method for flexure-dominated RC walls was developed. In determination of earthquake load, the proposed design method can address variations of energy dissipation capacity with design parameters such as dimensions and shapes of cross-sections, axial force, and reinforcement ratio and arrangement, The proposed design method was compared with the current performance-based design methods. The applicability of the proposed method was discussed.
A concentrically braced steel frame is a very efficient structural system because it requires relatively smaller amount of materials to resist lateral forces. However, primarily developed as a structural system to resist wind loads based on an assumption that the structure behaves elastically, a concentrically braced frame possibly experiences the deterioration in energy dissipation after brace buckling and the brittle failure of braces and connections when earthquake loads cause inelastic behavior. Consequently, plastic deformation is concentrated in the floor where brace buckling occurs first, which can lead to the rupture of the structure. This study suggests reinforcing H-shaped braces with non-welded cold-formed stiffeners to restrain flexure and buckling and resist tensile force and compressive force equally.

The present study proposes a simple equation to straightforwardly determine the potential plastic hinge length in boundary element of reinforced concrete shear walls. From the idealized curvature distribution along the shear wall length, a basic formula was derived as a function of yielding moment, maximum moment, and additional moment owing to diagonal tensile crack. Yielding moment and maximum moment capacities of shear wall were calculated on the basis of compatability of strain and equilibrium equation of internal forces. The development of a diagonal tensile crack at web was examined from the shear transfer capacity of concrete specified in ACI 318-11 provision and then the additional moment was calculated using the truss mechanism along the crack proposed by Park and Paulay. The moment capacities were simplified from an extensive parametric study; as a result, the equivalent plastic hinge length of shear walls could be formulated using indices of longitudinal tensile reinforcement at the boundary element, vertical reinforcement at web, and applied axial load. The proposed equation predicted accurately the measured plastic hinge length, providing that the mean and standard deviation of ratios between predictions and experiments are 1.019 and 0.102, respectively.
Statement of problem : The increased awareness of esthetics in dentistry has brought the esthetic consideration in prosthetic restorations . Dental ceramics offer better esthetics for use of prosthetic restorations. Unfortunately, dental ceramic materials are not always the most suitable candidate materials since their inherently brittle nature. In recent years, basic research in ceramic science has led to the recognition or several approaches to strengthen and to enhance esthetics of ceramics. Several all ceramic systems use ceramic core and porcelain build up structures . Ceramic cores influence to strength of all ceramic crowns . So the strength of ceramic cores is important to all ceramic crowns. Purpose : The purpose of this study is to estimate the flexural strength of ceramic cores in some all ceramic systems. Material and method : A biaxial flexure test was conducted on three groups(Cergo, Empress 2, In-Ceram). Each group consisted of 30 discs of nearly identical dimension with a 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm thickness and 12mm in diameter. The fracture load was recorded by Instron. Analysis of valiance(ANOVA) and Tukey's tests were performed using SAS statistical software. Results : 1.5mm thickness of specimens were significantly stronger than 0.5mm and 1.0mm thickness of specimens in Cergo and In-Ceram. But each sepecimen group of Empress 2 was no significantly strength by thickness. In order of In-Ceram, Empress 2 and Cergo has significantly stronger strength in the same thickness. Conclusion : In-Ceram is the strongest ceramic material in 3 materials. All the materials can be used according to the required characters.
