  • In this study, to improve on the inaccurate results of the orthotropic plate analysis, we aim to propose a modified coefficient of the orthotropic flexural rigidity for stiffened plates with rectangular ribs considering the dimensions of ribs. The sensitivity of the flexural rigidity and the maximum displacement according to the dimensions of stiffened plates were analyzed and the parametric study on the modified coefficient of the orthotropic flexural rigidity of stiffened plates was performed. The results show that the ratio of modified coefficients can be expressed as a function for each rib height, space and thickness regardless of plate thickness and the modified flexural rigidity can be easily estimated from the ratio functions of modified coefficients. The application of the coefficient function to various types of stiffened plates with different boundary conditions, aspect ratios, rib arrangement and loading size shows that the proposed function improves the accuracy of the orthotropic plate analysis compared with the results of the reference. Therefore, the orthotropic plate analysis of stiffened plates with rectangular ribs can easily achieve more accurate results using the coefficient function proposed in this study.

  • The deterioration of the flexural capacity by progressive crack and over deflection in R/C bridges is developed actually from the dynamic repeated loading due to vehicle traffics. Such a fact suggest a necessities of confirmation and estimation of the data acquired from monotonic incremental loading test. Therefore, this study carry out the monotonic incremental loading test and dynamic repeated loading test in R/C beams strengthened with CFS. By dynamic repeated loading test, the experiments confirmed the validities and fittness of the results acquired from monotonic incremental loading test and estimated the characteristics of the moment-curvature, degradation of the flexural rigidity, crack and failure.

  • In this paper, the bending characteristics of the corrugated plates is analyzed. The trapezoidally, triangularlly and sinusoidally corrugated plates are considered. The corrugated plate is treated as an orthotropic plate that has different flexural properties in two perpendicular directions. The equivalent bending and twisting rigidities for the equivalent orthotropic plates are derived. The equivalent flexural rigidities are estimated under the following postulations: (1) The angle of continuously corrugated plate is not changed after the deformation. (2) When the pure bending moment is applied in corrugated direction of the plate, the its plane is in pure bending. Several numerical examples are analyzed with the proposed method and compared with published results.

  • This paper is concerned with the change of joint rigidity in estimating the degree of semi-rigidity of connections and the buckling load in a single layer latticed dome. The estimations are based on information about the ratio for the rotational stiffness of the connection to the flexural stiffness of the member and the minimum eigenvalue of a structure for pinned, semi-rigid and completely rigid cases, respectively. Connection characteristics are reflected in the ratio control of joint rigidity for the DOFs to be related using the spring element by FEM.

  • In this study, the flexural behavior of steel fiber reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) was investigated. It presents experimental results of steel fiber reinforced UHPC with steel fiber content of 2% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at providing more information about UHPC beams in bending in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance and deflection in structural code in the future. The experimental results show that UHPC is in favor of cracking behavior and ductility of beams, and that the ductility indices range from 6.29 to 10.44, which means high ductility of UHPC. Also, the flexural rigidity of beam whose cast is begun from end of beam is larger than that of beam whose cast is begun from midspan of beam. This result represents that the flexural rigidity is affected by the placing method of UHPC.

  • Flexural rigidity(EI) and deflection characteristics of rice stalks were studied to investigate the mechanical interaction between a rice stalk and a combine reel in harvesting. Deflection of a rice stalk caused by reel operation is so large that conventional equation of small deflection fer elastic beam cannot be applied to the study of deflection characteristics. Therefore, an equation of large deflection for elastic beam was introduced in this study. Feasibility of this equation was examined by comparing theoretical calculation with the measured results for piano wire, and by the relationship between deflection and load acting on a rice stalk which was presumed by this equation. Results showed that the large deflection equation could predict the measurement data quite well. From this research, the following results were obtained. 1. Flexural rigidity(EI) calculated from the equation of large deflection was 4.0${\times}$l0$^4$N$.$$\textrm{mm}^2$(diameter 1.4mm, deflection 300mm) while the actual EI value of a piano wire(diameter 1.4mm) was 3.9${\times}$10$^4$N$.$$\textrm{mm}^2$. 2. The relationship between deflection and load acting on a rice stalk could be presumed by the large deflection equation. Flexural rigidity values of tested rice stalks calculated from the equation of large deflection were 1.6∼2.4${\times}$ l0$^4$N$.$$\textrm{mm}^2$(Hwa sung), 2.7∼3.5${\times}$ l0$^4$N$.$$\textrm{mm}^2$(Il pum) and 1.7∼2.4${\times}$ l0$^4$N$.$$\textrm{mm}^2$(Damakum)

  • Because of the different flexural rigidity between longitudinal and transverse direction, orthotropic plate theory may be suitable for describing the behavior of composite deck. The ratio of flexural rigidity between longitudinal and transverse direction affects the live load moment. Because of the ratio of flexural rigidity of concrete unfilled steel grid deck has a direct relationship with main bearing bar spacing, it is concluded that the study for the distribution factor which is effected by main bearing bar spacing and aspect ratio is needed. In this study, evaluate the live load moment of concrete unfilled steel grid deck using the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification and presents the distribution coefficient equation for concrete unfilled steel grid deck.

  • Two-row overlap pile wall, currently under development for use in deep excavations, is a novel retaining structure designed to perform itself as a cutoff wall as well as a high-stiffness wall by constructing four overlapping piles arranged in zigzag manner at a time using a tetra-axis auger. This wall has a relatively complex cross-section, compared with other types of pile wall, which would make it difficult to determine design parameters related to cross-section. In this study, a flexural rigidity equation has been derived by analyzing both theoretically and statistically various wall cross-sections with different pile diameters and overlap lengths. The flexural rigidity equation was found to show the maximum error rate of 3%.

  • Two types of conformal load-bearing antenna structure (CLAS) were designed with microwave composite laminates and Nomex honeycomb cores, to give both structural rigidity and good electrical performance. One is 4$\times$8 array for Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) system and the other is $5\times2$ array for wireless LAN system. Design was based on wide bandwidth, high polarization purity, low loss and good structural rigidity. We studied the design, fabrication and structural/electrical performances of the antenna structures. The flexural behavior was observed under a 3-point bending test, an impact test, and a buckling test. Electrical measurements were in good agreement with simulation results and these complex antenna structures have good flexural characteristics. The design of this antenna structure is extended to give a useful guide for sandwich panel manufacturers as well as antenna designers.

  • Single angle or channel with thin-walled open section can be used as compression member for example as web member in truss. In this case the inevitable eccentricity due to fabrication is commonly neglected in structural design. However eccentricity effect should be considered in the member design, especially in case of compression member. The critical loads of compression members that buckle by twisting or by a combination of bending and twisting are to be determined by solving governing differential equations. In this paper, the investigations are limited to the rolled channels([), equal-leg angles(L), lipped channels(C) and the applied loads are assumed to have some eccentricities.
