The direct strength method (DSM) has been adopted by the NAS (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (2005) for the design of cold-formed steel members. The method can be successfully applied to the design of welded steel members. This paper reviews the development of the DSM for welded steel structural members. The design strength formulae for welded section columns and beams for the DSM are based on the test results performed on welded H-section, C-section, circular and rectangular hollow section columns, plate girders and stiffened plates. The comparison between the design strength of welded sections predicted by the DSM and that estimated by existing specifications is also provided. The comparison verifies that the DSM can properly predict the compressive, flexural and shear strength of welded section columns and beams with the interaction between local and overall buckling.
A general earthquake resistant design philosophy of ductile frame buildings allows beams to form plastic hinges adjacent to beam-column connections. In order to carry out this design philosophy, the ultimate bond or shear strength of the beam should be greater than the flexural yielding force and should not degrade before reaching its required ductility. The behavior of RC members dominated by bond or shear action reveals a dramatic reduction of energy dissipation in the hysteretic response due to the severe pinching effects. In this study, a method was proposed to predict the deformability of reinforced concrete members with short-span-to-depth-ratios, which would result in bond failure after flexural yielding. Repeated or cyclic loading produces a progressive deterioration of bond that may lead to failure at lower cyclic bond stress levels. Accumulation of bond damage is caused by the propagation of micro-cracks and progressive crushing of concrete in front of the lugs. The proposed method takes into account bond deterioration due to the degradation of concrete in the post yield range. In order to verify bond deformability of the proposed method, the predicted results were compared with the experimental results of RC members reported in the technical literature. Comparisons between the observed and calculated bond deformability of the tested RC members showed reasonably good agreement.
The effect of basalt and polypropylene fibers on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is investigated in this paper. The compressive and tensile behaviors of the basalt concrete and polypropylene concrete cylinders are also investigated. Eight beams and 28 cylinders were made with different percentages of basalt and polypropylene fibers. The dosages of fiber were selected as 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.5% of the total cement weight. Each type of fiber was mixed solely with the concrete mix. Basalt and polypropylene fibers are modern and cheap materials that can be used to improve the structural behavior of RC members. This research is designed to find the optimum percentage of basalt and polypropylene fibers for enhancing the flexural behavior of RC beams. Test results showed that the addition of basalt and polypropylene fibers in any dosage (0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.5%) can increase the flexural strength and displacement ductility index of the beams where the maximum enhancement was measured with 1.3% fibers. The maximum increments in the flexural strength and the displacement ductility index were 30.39% and 260% for the basalt fiber case, while the maximum improvement for the polypropylene fibers case was 55.5% and 230% compared to the control specimen. Finite element (FE) models were then developed in ABAQUS to predict the numerical behaviour of the tested beams. The FE models were able to predict the experimental behaviour with reasonable accuracy. This research confirms the efficiency of basalt and polypropylene fibers in enhancing the flexural behavior of RC beams, and it also suggests the optimum dosage of fibers.
Results of seventy-seven specimens tested by this study and previous research were collected and evaluated to propose the flexural strength and shear strength for flexural members with steel fiber concrete. For strength evaluation, structural parameters such as compressive strength, steel fiber content, tensile reinforcement ratio, and shear span to effective depth ratio are involved. The proposed equations for flexural and shear strength are regarded to give a good prediction for the strength of steel fiber reinforced composite and/or RC beams to compare with equations by previous researchers. Especially, the proposed shear strength equation in this study shows the lowest the mean value, the coefficient of variation and the error ratio among predictions by several equations. Therefore, equations for shear strength and flexure strength, which are proposed in this study are to be useful measure to predict the actual behavior and failure mode of steel fiber reinforced composite beams.

The extensive use of external prestressing system with PSC-I beam to strengthen reinforced and prestressed concrete members requires the full understanding of the behavior of the strengthened members. The main approach of this research was to experimentally investigate the flexural performance of the PSC-I beam considering external tendon and an equation was developed which indicated the produced incremental stress in the tendon due to applied load. Further, this equation was verified through performing static loading tests on two experimental specimens considering the presence or absence of external tendon. The test results revealed that, the flexural performance enhanced due to the use of external tendon. Moreover, the magnitude of the estimated flexural strength using proposed stress increasing equation almost coincides with the experimental test results. However, it was the evident of the improvement of the flexural performance of the system by reinforcing with the external tendon and also proved that the proposed equation was valid and effective.
This paper presents an experimental investigation of bond-strengthening hooks as a new method to increase bond strength along flexural reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete (RC) beams and columns. The RC members, which consisted of 1,300 MPa-class spirals as shear reinforcement, often suffered from bond splitting failure. The proposed method attempts to increase confining stiffness around the flexural bars by placing U-shaped hooks and to prevent premature bond splitting failure. Twelve specimens with varied amounts and sizes of the hooks were prepared to verify the strengthening effectiveness under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. The test result indicated that the hooks increased the bond strength along the flexural bars although the strengthening effectiveness was limited by effective reinforcement ratio $P_{be}$. This limit is determined by size of stress-transmitting zones of concrete around anchors of the hooks. Anchors of the hooks are recommended to be longer than twelve times the hook diameter and inserted deeper than a quarter of the member depth (D/4). Proposed design equations provide modest estimates of the shear strengths.
Replacement of actual stress distribution in a reinforced concrete (RC) flexural member with a simpler geometrical shape, which maintains magnitude and location of the resultant compressive force, is an acceptable conceptual trick. This concept was originally perfected for normal strength concrete. In recent years, high strength concrete (HSC) has been introduced and widely used in modern construction. The stress block parameters require updating to account for special features of HSC in the design of flexural members. In future, more varieties of concrete may be developed and a corresponding design procedure of RC flexural members will be required. The usual practice is to conduct large number of experiments on various sizes of specimen and then evolve an empirical relation. This paper presents a numerical procedure through which the stress block parameters can be numerically derived for a given strain ratio variation. The material model for concrete is presented and computational procedure is described. This procedure is illustrated with several variations of strain ratio. The advantages of numerical procedure are that it costs less and it can be used with new material models for any new variety of concrete.

A secant stiffness linear analysis method was developed for moment redistribution of moment-resisting frames. In the proposed method, rotational spring models are used for plastic hinges of the members whose flexural moments are needed to be redistributed. At the plastic hinges, secant stiffness is used to address the effect of the flexural stiffness reduced by inelastic deformation. Linear analysis is repeated with adjusted secant stiffness until the flexural equilibrium is satisfied in the structure and members. By using the secant stiffness analysis, the effect of the inelastic deformation on the moment redistribution can be considered. Further, the safety of plastic hinges can be evaluated by comparing the inelastic rotation resulting from the secant stiffness analysis with the rotational capacity of the plastic hinges. For verification, the proposed method was applied to a continuous beam tested in previous study. A application example for a multiple story moment-resisting frame was presented.

This paper is on a practical method for determination of the economical steel ratio in RC flexural members with an equal safety factor. The cost functions of each material and labor are considered to construct the cost function. Then, an equation for determination of the economical flexure steel ratio with the lowest construction cost were proposed. It was found that a relevant steel ratio is recommended to be 0.65~1.0% for designing singly reinforced rectangular beam.
