  • A very flexible beam can be used to model various types of continuous mechanical parts such as cables and wires. In this paper, the dynamic properties of a very flexible beam, included in a multibody system, are analyzed using absolute nodal coordinates formulation, which is based on finite element procedures, and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In order to consider the dynamic interaction between a continuous large deformable beam and a rigid multibody system, a combined system equations of motion is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. Using the derived system equation, a computation method for the dynamic stress during flexible multibody simulation is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and its reliability is verified by a commercial program NASTRAN. This method is significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics models can be unified into one numerical system. In addition, to analyze a multibody system including a very flexible beam, formulations for the sliding joint between a very deformable beam and a rigid body are derived using a non-generalized coordinate, which has no inertia or forces associated with it. In particular, a very flexible catenary cable on which a multibody system moves along its length is presented as a numerical example.

  • Flexible structures have been adopted in heat transfer systems as vortex generators. The flexible vortex generators immersed in a flow show a self-sustained oscillatory motion, which enhances fluid mixing and heat transfer. In the present study, the vortex generators in a two-dimensional channel flow are numerically investigated, and they are symmetrically mounted on the upper and lower walls with an inclination angle. The momentum interaction and heat transfer between the flexible vortex generators and the surrounding fluid are considered by using an immersed boundary method. The inclination angle is one of the important factors in determining the flapping kinematics of the flexible vortex generators. The flapping amplitude increases as the inclination angle increases, thereby enhancing fluid mixing. The heat transfer is enhanced up to 80% comparing to the baseline channel flow.

  • In this paper, we discuss the vibration suppression control of spatial redundant flexible manipulators through pseudo-inversed of Jacobian. In order to verify our method, the experiments are performed for PTP(Point To Point) motion of spa-tial flexible manipulators(1) with no redundancy(2) with one redundant DOF(degree of freedom). Finally, a comparison between these results is presented to show the performance of out approach.

  • Several input shaping techniques are suggested to reduce the vibration of a flexible manipulator. The theories of typical 4 methods(Singer, Tuttle, Feddema, Zuo) are explained and are tested by the experiment of one link flexible manipulator. Zuo's method is the best of all with respect to its robustness.

  • A flexible rotor was smoothly passed through its bending critical speed, which is supported by AFB. Then, maximum magnitude of the rotor vibration at the middle point was 25${\mu}$m. The test rig was largely consisted of air turbine, multi-leaf type air foil bearing and flexible rotor and its bending critical speed was 32,600 rpm. And the balancing system and method for field balancing of the flexible rotor were developd successfully.

  • The AZO thin film was prepared on flexible substrate by Facing Targets Sputtering method. The substrate used the Polycarbonate(PC), thickness 200$\mu$m. In particular, the AZO thin film was prepared at room temperature because the substrate is weak in heat. The structural, electrical, optical properties of the AZO thin film were investigated and the surface was observed by microscope.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode controller based on variable structure for the tip position control of a single-link flexible manipulator. Dynamic equations of a single-link flexible manipulator are derived from the Euler-Lagrange equation using a Lagrangian assumed modes method based on Bernoulli-Euler Beam theory. Simulation results are presented to show the validity of the system modeling, controller design.

  • Influence coefficients on two-plane flexible rotor balancing model are derived by using the transfer matrix method. The model has a rigid uniform cylinder at mid-span of flexible shafts. Both faces of the rigid cylinder are used as the balancing planes. Calculated influence coefficients show that there exist the rotating speed ranges which are useless or insensitive for the balancing. Gyroscopic effect and damping are considered in the study and their effects are discussed.

  • The design for cold extrusion dies is very important because the die insert is subjected to very high radial and hoop stresses. The design of cold extrusion dies has many constrained conditions. In this paper, two assumptions were proposed. First assumption was selected by yielding strength dependent on the to hoop stress of each ring in dies. Second assumption is that the maximum inner pressure is determined when yielding occurs in one ring of dies. To obtain the maximum inner pressure the flexible tolerance method was applied. A comparison of design values between the proposed method and the conventional method has been discussed.

  • Eigenstructure assignment is a typical method with the capability of consideration of the time-domain specifications in designing a linear control system. In this paper, we propose a new method for eigenstructure to achieve desired eigenvectors more precisely than with the conventional method. In the proposed method, the conventional eigenstructure assignment problem is interpreted as a constrained optimization one, and it converted into an unconstrained optimization problem to deal with the problem easily. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed flexible eigenstructure assignment method.
