  • The drilling process has a great importance for the production technology due to its widerspread use in the manufacturing industry. In order to enhance a maximum production rate and prevent the drill from the damage, it is important to monitor and control the drilling system. Thrust force and cutting torque are the main output variables in the design of drilling control systems. In this paper, an alternative estimation method of thrust force by using flexible neural networks is proposed. Flexible neural network uses the sigmoid activation function with adjustable parameter in order to enhance the approximation accuracy ...

  • Computer simulation is a powerful tool for the design and evaluation of manufacturing systems. This paper consists of two major parts. First, it presents a brief survey of simulation languages oriented towards the analysis of manufacturing systems, with their important properties. Second, it introduces a simple case of simulation application to a flexible manufacturing system(FMS).

  • This paper deals with a problem on the selection of alternative tools in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) where a lot of tools are required to produce a large variety of product items. An approach using branch and bound method is proposed to minimize a total number of tools required through the optimal use of the alternative tools. In this approach, tools are initially divided into tool subgroups based on graph theory for the purpose of the effective search of the optimal solution. A small example is also presented to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • We address the problem of determining the optimal processing times and pallet/fixture allocation in Flexible Manufacturing systems in order to minimize tool cost while meeting throughput targets of multiple part types. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear program superimposed on a closed queueing network of the FMSs under consideration. A numerical example reveals the potential of our approach for significant cost saving. We argue that our model can be Integrated Into the process planning system of an FMS to generate efficient process plans quickly.

  • To apply the queueing network theory in evaluating performances of flexible manufacturing systems, it is generally assumed that the processing times are distributed exponentially. However, in FMS, processing times are usually deterministic. In this study the performance measures of FMS are approximated under the assumption that processing times are usually deterministic. Multi-classes of parts and single server and multi-server stations are considered in the model. This study also that, in the numerical example, this approach yields better solutions than those obtained by the pure Linearizer algorithm, when the processing times are deterministic.

  • This article proposes a new technique of the dynamic model using multi-body dynamic analysis tool for a flexible main spindle rotor system with a novel phase adjusting control technique for the purpose of an active control of rotor vibration. The dynamic model is used as a plant model. Also in order to make control system, a component parameters and phase controller is composed and simulated by SIMULINK. The vibration is reduced to 50%. Therefore the ADAMS dynamic model for the flexible main spindle rotor and the phase adjusting control techniques may be effective for the suppressing the vibration and helpful for the future active control for rotor vibration.

  • Recently, concerns about the environment are becoming more important because of global warming and the exhaustion of earth's resources. In the aviation and automobile industries, the application of light materials is increasingly important for eco-friendly and effective. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics is a composite material which great formability and the high strength of carbon fiber. CFRP, which is both light and strong, is hard to manufacture. In addition, CFRP machining has a high chance of defects. This research discusses the development of a manufacturing system package for CFRP machining. It involving CFRP Drilling/Water-jet Manufacturing Machines, Inspection/Post-processing Systems, CNC platform for an EtherCAT servo Communication, Flexible Manufacturing Systems and CFRP machining Processes.

  • The FPCs(Flexible Printed Circuit) are currently used in several electronic products like digital cameras, cellular phones because of flexible material characteristics. Because the FPC is usually small size and flexible, only one FPC should not enter chip mounting process, instead, several FPCs are placed on the large rigid pallette and enter into the chip mounting process. Currently the job of mounting FPC on the pallette is carried by totally manual way. Thus, the goals of the research is develop the automatic machine of FPC mounting on pallette using vision alignment. Instead of using two cameras or using moving one camera, the proposed vision system with only one fixed camera is adopted. Moreover, the two picker heads which can handle two FPCs simultaneously are used to make process time shortened. The procedure of operation is firstly to measure alignment error of FPC, correct alignment errors, and finally mount well-aligned FPC on the pallette. The vision technology is used to measure alignment error accurately, and precision motion control is used in correcting errors and mounting FPC.

  • CIM is generally considered as a solution for total automation of a manufacturing system. In a CIM system, Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) is linked colsely to the actual manufacturing line. This study will examine the strategy of integrating incompatible FA equipments, expecially PLCs (Programable Logic Controllers). PLC Manager is proposed as a model for integrating PLC algorithms, whose primary tasks are to communicate line-field data with PLCs and cell controller. To operate it, a PLC script language is designed and implemented.

  • This paper develops an adaptive scheduling policy for flexible manufacturing systems. The inductive learning methodology used for constructing this state-dependent scheduling policy provides and understanding of the relative importance of the various system parameters in determining the appropriate scheduling rule. Experimental studies indicated the superiority of the suggested approach over the alternative approach involving the repeated application of a single scheduling rule for randomly generated test problems as well as a real system, and under both stationary and nonstationary conditions. In particular, its relative performance improves further when there are frequent disruptions, and when disruptions are caused by the introduction of tiiight due date jobs, one of the most common surces of disruptions in most manufacturing systems.
