  • This article presents a research study, with both laboratory and field tests, of a deep foundation in a markedly anisotropic medium. Particularly it has focused on the evaluation of the behavior of a pile, one meter in diameter, embedded in a rocky environment with difficult conditions, in the Flysch of the Spanish city of San Sebastián. To carry out the research, the site of a bridge over the Urumea River was chosen, which was supported by pre-excavated reinforced concrete piles. 4 borings were carried out, by the rotation and washing method, with continuous sampling and combined with flexible dilatometer tests. In the field, an Osterberg load test (O-cell) was performed, while in the laboratory, determinations of natural moisture, natural unit weight, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), point load strength (PLS), compressive wave propagation velocity (Vc) and also triaxial and direct shear tests were carried out. The research results indicate the following: a) the empirical functions that correlate the UCS with the PLS are not always linear; b) for the studied Flysch it is possible to obtain empirical functions that correlate the UCS with the PLS and with the Vc; c) the bearing capacity of the studied Flysch is much greater than if it is evaluated by different load capacity theories; d) it is possible to propose an empirical function that allows evaluating the mobilized shear strength (τm), as a function of the UCS and the displacement relative of the pile (δr).

  • This paper presents the design features and preliminary design analysis results of the Wielenga Innovation Static Salt Reactor (WISSR). The WISSR incorporates features that make it both flexible and inherently safe. It is based on innovative technology that controls a nuclear reactor by moving molten salt fuel into or out of the core. The reactor is a low-pressure, fast spectrum transuranic (TRU) burner reactor. Inherent shutdown is achieved by a large negative reactivity feedback of the liquid fuel and by the expansion of fuel out of the core. The core is made of concentric, thin annular fuel chambers containing molten fuel salt. A molten salt coolant passes between the concentric fuel chambers to cool the core. The core has both fixed and variable volume fuel chambers. Pressure, applied by helium gas to fuel reservoirs below the core, pushes fuel out of a reservoir and up into a set of variable volume chambers. A control system monitors the density and temperature of the fuel throughout the core. Using NaCl-(TRU,U)Cl3 fuel and NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 coolant, a road-transportable compact WISSR core design was developed at a power level of 1250 MWt. Preliminary neutronics and thermal-hydraulics analyses demonstrate the technical feasibility of WISSR.

  • It is required to expand area of inter-Korean economic cooperation, being limited to non-military field, to military field and then, to positively promote arms control in order to establish foundation for peaceful reunification in Korean peninsula. Reasons why arms control has not been promoted between South and North Korea in the meantime were such original factors as follows; (1) limit of confidence building between the South and the North, (2) functional limit of arms control itself, (3) institutional structural limit between the South and the North, (4) environmental limit at home and abroad. It is necessary to get out from existing frame and to seek a new paradigm in order to overcome above factors and to realize arms control between the South and the North. First, it is required to have prior political dialog at the South-North high-level talks in order to promote arms control and to exercise 'strategic flexibility' during negotiation and promotion process. For this, 'flexible reciprocity' has to be adopted in compliance with situation and conditions. Second, it is necessary to get out from existing principle of 'confidence building in advance and arms reduction later' but to seek the 'simultaneous driving principle of confidence building and arms reduction' as an eclectic approach. Namely, based on reasonable sufficiency, it is required to promote military confidence building and limited arms reduction in parallel, which is a lower level of arms control. Third, as an advisory body of Prime Minister's Office, it is necessary to install an organization exclusively responsible for arms control and to positively handle arms control issue from the standpoint of national policy strategy. If the South-North high-level talks take place, it is necessary to organize and operate 'South-North Joint Arms Control Promotion Board (tentative name)'. Fourth, it is required to exercise more active diplomatic competence in order to create national consensus on necessity of arms control for peaceful reunification and to form more favorable international environment. Especially, it is necessary to think about how to solve nuclear issue of North Korea together in collaboration with international society and how to maintain balance between ROK-US alliance and Sino-Korean cooperation relations.

  • In this study, an analysis method for the earthquake response of an offshore wind turbine model is developed, considering the effects of the fluid-structure-soil interaction. The turbine is modeled as a tower with a lumped mass at the top of it. The tower is idealized as a tubular cantilever founded on flexible seabed. Substructure and Rayleigh-Ritz methods are used to derive the governing equation of a coupled structure-fluid-soil system incorporating interactions between the tower and sea water and between the foundation and the flexible seabed. The sea water is assumed to be a compressible but non-viscous ideal fluid. The impedance functions of a rigid footing in water-saturated soil strata are obtained from the Thin-Layer Method (TLM) and combined with the superstructure model. The developed method is applied to the earthquake response analysis of an offshore wind turbine model. The method is verified by comparing the results with reference solutions. The effects of several factors, such as the flexibility of the tower, the depth of the sea water, and the stiffness of the soil, are examined and discussed. The relative significance of the fluid-structure interaction over the soil-structure interaction is evaluated and vice versa.

  • The purpose of this study is to closely examine the influence of the surcharge load applied to the retaining wall through some model tests, in which wall stiffness in each stage of excavation, horizontal displacement of the retaining wall and surface displacement of the backfill according to wall stiffness and ground conditions, and change and distribution of the earth pressure applied to it were measured and their values were produced, then these values were mutually compared with their theoretical values and their values after analysis of the data obtained at the field, and they were analytically studied, in order to closely examine the influence of the surcharge load applied to the retaining wall. Findings from this study are as follows: The shape of ground surface settlement curve on the model ground under surcharge load, different from the distribution curve of regular probabilities which is of a shape of ground surface settlement under no surcharge load, appears in that settlement in an arching shape shows where the center part of surcharge load shows the maximum settlement. In examining the maximum horizontal displacement with the surcharge load applied to each stage of excavation, it occured at the point of 0.8H(excavation depth) when finally excavated. Regarding the range in which the displacement of the retaining wall increases according to application of surcharge load, the increment of displacement showed till the point of depth which is of two times of the distance of load from the upper part of the wall. Also since each displacement of the foundation plate caused by the ground surface settlement according to each stage of excavation occured most significantly at the final stage. Also since regarding wall stiffness, the wall of its thickness of 4mm(flexible coefficient $p:480m^3/t$), produced maximum 3 times of wall stiffness than its thickness of 9mm(flexible coefficient $p: 40m^3/t$), it was found out that influence of wall stiffness is so significant.

  • The settlement hardly occurs in structures supported by pile foundation such as abutment, culvert but a cavity is formed in the lower part of a structure. As a result, soil discharged from the lateral ground to the cavity accelerates the settlement of the lateral ground of the structure, resulting in a larger settlement. Therefore, in order to prevent problems caused by cavity under the structure supported by pile foundation, soil Flow Protector (briefly called 'FLP'), which can be easily installed on the side of structure, was developed. In this study, an laboratory model test was carried out to prove the reduction effect of settlement and to estimate the optimal installation length of the FLP. As a result, the installation of the FLP reduced the settlement of the lateral ground and prevented the leakage of lateral ground soil into the cavity. If the stiffness of the FLP is small, the state or active earth pressure is generated in the upper part, which is not favorable for stability. But if the stiffness of the FLP is high enough, the passive earth pressure area is generated in the upper part, which will be advantageous for the stability. Also, the increased installation length of FLP is effective to reduce the settlement. And the ratio of the optimal length of the FLP to the box structure height (H = 250 mm) are flexible FLP 1.38, stiff FLP 0.73.

  • Necessity of smart work that can change environment of working in organizations has been emphasized. Lots of organizations, however, wish to do work with smartness through adoption of smart work technologies, those are not sure whether smart work will be successful or not till now. Especially, viewpoints of leaders concerning efficiency and effectiveness of smart work who operate the organizations may be different in many circumstances such as industries, characteristics of work, etc. Therefore, hopefully, this research want to investigate whether differences among leader and non-leader group, tendencies of personal leadership styles in work exit or not by empirical and exploratory approach. Totally, 118 questionnaires had been collected and performed test of mean difference between groups. As a result, some items such as working place, working methods, flexible time and tension of smartwork showed significant differences between level of leadership styles and non-leader and leader groups. And, futhermore, from this research I believe that we can have a few insights for successful smart working environment in organizations.

  • This study compares elastic moduli calculated using two stiffness testing methods with different strain ranges to evaluate the stress-settlement characteristics of foundation support layers. Elastic moduli were calculated by the soil stiffness gauge (SSG) in the micro-strain range and the plate load test (PLT) in the medium strain range. To apply the elastic moduli obtained by the two testing methods with different strain ranges to the design and construction of foundation soils, the correlation between each measurement value should be identified in advance. As a result of the comparative analysis of the elastic moduli calculated using the two methods in weathered soil and rock, which are representative support layers in Korea, the calculated elastic moduli differed depending on the types of soil and stress conditions. For various soil types, the static elastic modulus obtained by the PLT was reduced by 56% because of the difference in the strain level of the test compared with the dynamic elastic modulus obtained by the SSG. Therefore, the results show that it is necessary to apply corrections to the stress distribution, stress level, and dynamic effect according to the ground stiffness to effectively use the SSG instead of the PLT.
