The Influence of Fixation Rigidity on Intervertebral Joints - An Experimental Comparison between a Rigid and a Flexible System

  • Objective: Spinal instrumentation without fusion often fails due to biological failure of intervertebral joints (spontaneous fusion, degeneration, etc). The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of fixation rigidity on viability of intervertebral joints. Methods: Twenty pigs in growing period were subjected to posterior segmental fixation. Twelve were fixed with a rigid fixation system(RF) while eight were fixed with a flexible unconstrained implant(FF). At the time of the surgery, a scoliosis was created to monitor fixation adequacy. The pigs were subjected to periodic radiological examinations and 12pigs (six in RF, six in FF) were euthanized at 12-18months postoperatively for analysis. Results: The initial scoliotic curve was reduced from $31{\pm}5^{\circ}$ to $27{\pm}8^{\circ}$ in RF group (p=0.37) and from $19{\pm}4^{\circ}$ to $17{\pm}5^{\circ}$ in FF group (p=0.21). Although severe disc degeneration and spontaneous fusion of facet joints were observed in RF group, disc heights of FF group were well maintained without major signs of degeneration. Conclusion: The viability of the intervertebral joints depends on motion spinal fixation. Systems allowing intervertebral micromotion may preserve the viability of intervertebral discs and the facet joint articular cartilages while maintaining a reasonably stable fixation.

Oxidation and Repeated-Bending Properties of Sn-Based Solder Joints After Highly Accelerated Stress Testing (HAST)

  • The repeated-bending properties of Sn-0.7Cu, Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu (SAC0307), and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solders mounted on flexible substrates were studied using highly accelerated stress testing (HAST), followed by repeated-bending testing. In the Sn-0.7Cu joints, the $Cu_6Sn_5$ intermetallic compound (IMC) coarsened as the HAST time increased. For the SAC0307 and SAC305 joints, the $Ag_3Sn$ and $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMCs coarsened mainly along the grain boundary as the HAST time increased. The Sn-0.7Cu solder had a high contact angle, compared to the SAC0307 and SAC305 solders; consequently, the SAC0307 and SAC305 solder joints displayed smoother fillet shapes than the Sn-0.7Cu solder joint. The repeated-bending for the Sn-0.7Cu solder produced the crack initiated from the interface between the Cu lead wire and the solder, and that for the SAC solders indicated the cracks initiated at the surface, but away from the interface between the Cu lead wire and the solder. Furthermore, the oxide layer was thickest for Sn-0.7Cu and thinnest for SAC305, regardless of the HAST time. For the SAC solders, the crack initiation rate increased as the oxide layer thickened and roughened. $Cu_6Sn_5$ precipitated and grew along the grain and subgrain boundaries as the HAST time increased, embrittling the grain boundary at the crack propagation site.

  • This study was carried out to determine the Joint characteristic of L-type specimens. L-type specimens were made of two kinds uf solid woods(Antiaris, Sepetir) and three kinds of wood based materials(plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard). They were constructed with PVC anchor and screw, and were discussed with joint strength and stiffness coefficients. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Bending strength showed very high increasing rate from one to three used PVC anchor and screw but was a little rise from three to four used PVC anchor and screw in solid wood. However. in wood based materials, it was unchanged without increasing rate or slight decreased from three to four used PVC anchor and screw. 2. The stiffness coefficients, or Z-values, were in the range from $4.704\times10^{-4}$ to $1.864\times10^{-3}$(rad/kgf-cm). They showed $10^{-3}$ level in one PVC anchor and screw but $10^{-4}$ level in two, three. four PVC anchor and screw. Accordingly, they indicated flexible joints in one PVC anchor and screw and relatively stable joints in two, three. four PVC anchor and screw. 3. Measured ultimate bending moments were 258.70kgf-cm in plywood and 142.68kgf-cm in medium density fiberboard. 4. Comparing with dowel joint. the joint strength used PVC anchor screw was inferior to 8mm and 10mm dowel diameter but differ little from 6mm dowel diameter.

비모수적 코플라를 이용한 반복측정 이변량 자료의 조건부 결합 분포 추정 (Estimation of the joint conditional distribution for repeatedly measured bivariate cholesterol data using nonparametric copula)

  • 본 논문에서는 이변량 경시적 자료의 조건부 결합 분포를 추정하기 위하여 회귀 모형과 코플라 모형을 연구하였다. 주변 분포의 추정을 위하여 시변 전환 모형을 고려하였고, 이변량 반응변수 각각에 대한 주변 분포를 경험 분포를 이용한 비모수적 코플라를 이용하여 결합하여 조건부 결합 분포를 추정하였다. 주변 분포 모형의 모수 추정치는 추정방정식의 해로 얻어낼 수 있으며 우리가 제안한 모형은 조건부 평균 모형만으로 자료를 설명하기 어려운 경우에 적용될 수 있다. 시변 전환 모형과 비모수적 코플라 모형을 결합한 본 논문의 방법은 반복 측정된 이변량 경시적 자료에 대한 모형화가 모형에 대한 가정에서 비교적 자유로운 장점이 있다. 우리는 본 논문의 방법을 반복 측정된 이변량 콜레스테롤 자료를 분석하는데 적용하여 보았다.

암반사면의 절리빈도 특성에 따른 프리스플리팅 발파공법의 적용성 연구 (A Study on Applicability of Pre-splitting Blasting Method According to Joint Frequency Characteristics in Rock Slope)

  • 본 연구에서는 암반사면형성 작업시 최종벽면에 적용된 프리스플리팅(pre-splitting) 발파공법의 발파효과와 관련하여 발파 후 벽면의 암반손상이 장약된 폭약의 폭력 보다는 암반 내에 발달된 불연속면의 발달 형태에 따라 더 큰 영향을 보일 수 있음을 규명하였다. 이를 위하여 불연속면을 대표할 수 있는 절리에 대한 조사를 통해 발파 후 벽면 암반의 절리군 분포양상을 4가지 Case로 분류하고, 파쇄도 분석 영상처리시스템을 통해 벽면에 나타나는 암반블록의 크기 빈도를 비교 분석함으로써 벽면의 암반손상도를 파악하였다. 절리군이 1개 이하로 발달하는 경우, 분석된 블록의 크기 중 2,000mm 이상 되는 부분이 42%를 차지하여 프리스플리팅 발파공법의 효과를 뚜렷이 확인할 수 있었으며, 2~3개의 절리군이 일방향으로 발달하는 경우와 교차되면서 발달하는 경우, 블록의 크기는 1,000~2,000mm 사이에 각각 43.6% 및 35.8%의 빈도로 분포하는 것으로 나타나 프리스플리팅 발파공법에 의한 발파효율이 다소 떨어지는 양상을 보였다. 그러나 3개 이상의 절리군이 불규칙하게 발달하는 경우에는 블록의 크기가 250~500mm 사이에 35%의 빈도로 분포하고 1,000mm 이상의 크기에 대해서는 거의 나타나지 않는 양상을 보였다. 따라서 이러한 경우 프리스플리팅 발파공법에 의한 발파 효과는 거의 없이 일반적인 발파가 이루어졌다고 볼 수 있었다. 또한 PFC2D에 의한 발파수치해석결과, 암반 내부로의 손상영역 발생은 본 발파보다는 프리스플리팅 발파공법에 의해 직접적인 영향을 받을 수 있음을 확인하였으며, 따라서 향후 사면 형성을 위한 프리스플리팅 발파공법을 적용할 경우에는 사전 지표지질조사를 시행하여 절리를 비롯한 불연속면과 관련된 사항을 충분히 파악할 필요가 있으며, 시공진행에 따라 예상보다 많은 절리군이 나타날 경우에는 프리스플리팅 발파공법의 설계 조정이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

EFFECT OF THE FLEXIBILITY OF AUTOMOTIVE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS IN MULTIBODY DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS

  • In this study, the effects of flexible bodies in vehicle suspension components were investigated to enhance the accuracy of multibody dynamic simulation results. Front and rear suspension components were investigated. Subframes, a stabilizer bar, a tie rod, a front lower control arm, a front knuckle, and front struts were selected. Reverse engineering techniques were used to construct a virtual vehicle model. Hard points and inertia data of the components were measured with surface scanning equipment. The mechanical characteristics of bushings and dampers were obtained from experiments. Reaction forces calculated from the multibody dynamics simulations were compared with test results at the ball joint of the lower control arm in both time-history and range-pair counting plots. Simulation results showed that the flexibility of the strut component had considerable influence on the lateral reaction force. Among the suspension components, the flexibility of the sub-frame, steering knuckle and upper strut resulted in better correlations with test results while the other flexible bodies could be neglected.

휠-레일 접촉모듈을 포함한 동역학 해석 프로그램 개발 (Development of a Dynamic Simulation Program Including a Wheel-Rail Contact Module)

  • 다양한 철도차량 동역학 해석 프로그램들은 장단점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 프로그램들은 가선계를 표현할 수 있는 대변형체를 나타낼 수 없는 한계를 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 철도차량의 동역학 해석을 할 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하였다. 이 프로그램은 강체, 유연체, 대변형체에 대한 해석을 수행하고 상용프로그램과의 비교를 통하여 신뢰성을 확보하였다. 또한 가선계를 대변형체로 고려하였고, 강체와 대변형체를 연결하는 미끄럼 조인트를 추가하였다. 여기에 휠-레일 접촉모듈을 추가하여 철도차량의 동역학 해석이 가능한 프로그램을 개발하였다.

  • Today, although there have been high technical developments of a compressor in the respect of its capacity, it has been so hard to develop in the respect of vibration and noise because mechanical structure of it has originally numerous vibration and noise. However, if we can grasp the point of systematic phenomena of vibration and noise through the understanding of dynamic characteristics in mechanical equipment, it may be possible to consider countermeasures. In this study about a reciprocal compressor, the part of its machinery is modeled as rigid body, and the part of its spring is modeled as flexible body, and then they are analyzed by DADS. Each rigid body and spring are connected with joint torque of a motor is applied to shaft, and pressure is applied to a piston so that a compressor can be revolved. Based on this modeling, influence of a compressor's vibration is analyzed through changes of offset, connecting rod and crank radius In the case of weight balance, it I produced after re-design, and then changes of vibration of a compressor's inside are checked through experiments. These analysis data may help set measures of reducing vibration of a reciprocal compressor.

탄력성 있는 골수강 내고정물과 회전경첩형 슬관절 전치환물을 조합한 종양인공관절로 자가골의 골 용해를 감소시킬 수 있는가? (Do the Rotating Hinge-Flexible Intramedullary Nail Composites Alleviate Junctional Osteolysis in Megaprothesis Reconstruction for Bone Tumor?)

  • 목적: 슬관절 주위에서 탄력성 있는 골수강 내고정물과 회전경첩 슬관절 전치환물을 이용한 재건술이 종양인공관절과 자가골 경계부위의 골 흡수를 억제할 수 있는지를 35례에서 분석하였다. 대상 및 방법: 재건 술식은 다음과 같다. 1) 종양 절제, 2) 근위부나 원위부의 골수강에 다수의 Ender 정 삽입, 3) Ender 정과 Endo-Link 형 슬관절 전치환물을 강선 과 골 시멘트를 이용하여 결합 결과: 평균 추시기간은 53개월(30~79개월) 이었다. 최종 추시 상 29명의 환자가 가동관절을 유지하였다. 장관골 길이의 40% 이상을 절제한 군에서 종양인공관절과 자가골 경계부위 골질의 비후가 나타났다(p=0.028). 내고정 금속정의 파괴가 8례 있었으며, 조기 및 지연 감염으로 8례의 내고정물을 제거하였다. 본 재건술의 생존율은 6년에 33%였다. Musculoskeletal Tumor Society System 평가 법에 따른 기능적 결과는 26.8(89.3%)였다. 결론: 본 술식의 단-중기적 결과는 양호하였으며 합병증 발생시 재수술이 매우 용이하였다. 본 술식에서 관찰된 종양인공관절-자가골 이행 부위의 골 비후 소견은 추후 더 연구해 볼 문제로 생각된다.

A simplified method for evaluation of shear lag stress in box T-joints considering effect of column flange flexibility

  • This study provides a simplified method for the evaluation of shear lag stress in rectangular box T-joints. The occurrence of shear lag phenomenon in the box T-joint generates stress concentration localized at both web-flange junctions of the beam, which leads to cracking or failure in the weld region of the joint. To prevent such critical circumstance, peak stress at the weld region is required to be checked during a preliminary design stage. In this paper, the shear lag stresses in the T-joints were evaluated using least-work solution in which the longitudinal displacements of the beam flange and web were presumed. The evaluation process considered particularly the effect of column flange flexibility, which was represented by an axial spring model, on the shear lag stress distribution. A simplified method for stress evaluation was provided to avoid solving complex mathematical problems using a stress modification factor βs from a parametric study. The results showed that the proposed method was valid for predicting the shear lag stress in the box T-joints manually, as well compared with finite element results. The results are further summarized, discussed, and clarified that more flexible column flange caused higher stress concentration.
