  • This paper addresses a fleet operation planning problem for a static freight container transportation system in which all the transportation requirements are predetermined at the beginning of a planning horizon. In the transportation system under consideration, a number of loaded containers are to be moved between container storage yards. An optimal fleet planning model is used to determine the minimum number of vehicles required. Based on the results from the optimal model, a tabu-search based algorithm is presented to perform a given transportation requirements with the least number of vehicles. The performance of the new procedure is evaluated through some experiments in comparison with two existing methods, and the it is found that our procedure produces good-quality solutions.

  • The industrial operation is one of the three basic modes of shipping operation with liner and Tramp operations. Industrial operators usually control vessels of their own or on a time charter to minimize the cost of shipping their cargoes. Such operations abound in shipping of bulk commodities, such as oil, chemicals and ores. This work is concerned with an operational optimization analysis of the fleet owned by a major oil company. a typical industrial operator. The operational optimization problem of the fleet of a major oil company is divided Into two phase problem. The front end corresponds to the optimization problem of the transportation of crude oil. product mix. and the distribution of product oil to comply with the demand of the market. The back end tackles the scheduling optimization problem of the fleet to meet the seaborne transportation demand derived from the front end. A case study reflecting the practices of an international major oil company is demonstrated to make clear the underlying ideas.

  • Fleet sizing and distribution of empty equipments are two of the most critical problems in managing transportation system. This paper develops a cost model for sizing a fleet and establishing decentralized redistribution polices of empty equipments by building from inventory theory of multi-echelon system in hub-and-spoke network. An analytical approach to determine control variables of redistribution policies in each terminal and fleet size of the transportation system is proposed and its results are validated by simulation model. Numerical experiments are conducted with respect to parameters of the model and test results for assumptions of the model are discussed.

  • Construction equipment is a major energy consumption source in construction projects. If 10% reduction of the diesel fuel usage is achieved in the construction industry, it may reduce 5% of the total energy usage. Energy saving operation is a major issue in equipment-intensive operations (e.g., earthmoving or paving operations). Identifying optimal equipment fleet is important measure to achieve low-energy consumption in those operations. This study presents a system which finds an optimal equipment fleet by computing the low-energy performance of earthmoving operations. It establishes construction operation model and compares numerous combinations using alternative equipment allocation plans. It implements sensitivity analysis that facilitates searching the lowest energy consumption equipment fleet by enumerating all cases.

  • In this paper, we consider the train-fleet assignment problem to determine fleet assignment and seat allocation synchronously. An integer programming model of the problem and a decomposition-based solution approach are developed to handle short-term period deterministic orgin-destination demands. The primary objective used in the developed model is to maximize the total number of passengers transported during peak load periods, such as Chuseok national holiday period. Thus, in developing the model we choose to profit-pursuing system. We also show how the proposed model can be readily modified to incorporate profit-maximization. Using the empirical data sets provided by a Korean railroad company, we have tested the proposed solution approach and carried out various comparison analyses by varying traffic demand patterns and train schedules. The computational experiments reveal that the proposed solutions approach produces high quality solutions in reasonable computation time.

  • Airline schedule is the most basic data for flight operations and has significant importance to an airline's management. It is crucial to know the airline's current schedule status in order to effectively manage the company and to be prepared for abnormal situations. In this study, machine learning techniques were applied to actual schedule data to examine the possibility of whether the airline's fleet state could be artificially learned without prior information. Given that the schedule is in categorical form, One Hot Encoding was applied and t-SNE was used to reduce the dimension of the data and visualize them to gain insights into the airline's overall fleet status. Interesting results were discovered from the experiments where the initial findings are expected to contribute to the fields of airline schedule health monitoring, anomaly detection, and disruption management.

  • This paper presents a mathematical model for a double-fleet operation in Korean high speed rail (HSR). KORAIL has a plan to launch new HSR units in 2010, which are composed of 10 railcars. The double-fleet operation assigns a single-unit or two-unit fleet to a segment, accommodating demand fluctuation. The proposed model assumes stochastic demand and uses chance-constrained constraints to assure a preset service level. It can be used in the tactical planning stage of the rail management as it includes several real-world conditions, such as the capacities of the infra-structures and operational procedures. In the solution approach, the expected revenue in the objective function is linearized by using expected marginal revenue, and the chance-constrained constraints are linearized by assuming that demands are normally distributed. Subsequently, the model can be solved by a mixed-integer linear programming solver fur small size problems. The test results of the model applied to Friday morning train schedules for one month sample data from KTX operation in 2004 shows that the proposed model could be utilized to determine the effectiveness of double-fleet operation, which could significantly increase the expected profit and seat utilization rates when properly maneuvered.

  • The naval ship consists of a variety of classes, including patrol, frigate, destroyer and landing ship. There are various means of communication between combat ships belonging to the mobile fleet, including voice network, text message network and tactical data link. The operation at the existing mobile fleet level was conducted mainly on voice and text message, and tactical data link were used mainly to share tactical information between combat ships. This study intended to design HCI for commander like as KDDX of fleet level based on tactical data link, a means of communication between ships, to secure operational control of the mobile fleet. Recently, naval ships have been developed in the organization of various sensors, weapons and tactical data links integrated into the combat management system, and this study also designed the HCI based on the tactical data links integrated in the combat management system. The purpose of this study was to secure the operational efficiency of the tactical data link based on the combat management system in operation of the mobile fleet, and to improve the capability of the fleet commander to recognize the battlefield situation awareness.

  • In construction jobs, a combination of various kinds of machinery is used to perform earthworks at a large-scale site. Individual equipments essentially cooperate with each other on task such as excavation, load, transfer and compaction. While other area have studied cooperation system, related study in domestic construction is in poor condition. In this study, construction equipment fleet management system is developed for solving this problem and find way to improving efficiency in earthworks site. The entire concept of the fleet management system, including its components and process, has been systematically outlined in this paper. An operational methodology has also been suggested, where a number of machines, such as the excavators, trucks and compactors, are chosen and further grouped into a cluster. A case study verify fleet management system's effectiveness on performing task package by comparing existing work method with methodology in this study. Fleet management system in this study is expected to curtail fuel consumption by the reduction of working time and moving distance. Furthermore, it can be anticipated to declining carbon emission effect.
