  • For the first time, a novel analytical model of the net gain for a Raman-EDFA hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) is proposed and its various parameters optimized using a genetic algorithm. Our method has been shown to be robust in the simultaneous analysis of multiple parameters (Raman length, EDFA length, and pump powers) to obtain large gain. The optimized HOA is further investigated at the system level for the scenario of a 50-channel DWDM system with 0.2-nm channel spacing. With an optimized HOA, a flat gain of >17 dB is obtained over the effective ITU-T wavelength grid with a variation of less than 1.5 dB, without using any gain-flattening technique. The obtained noise figure is also the lowest value ever reported for a Raman-EDFA HOA at reduced channel spacing.

  • Desalting methods for chloride ions from the excavated iron objects were studied. These methods were compared with room temperature and heating condition of treating solution. During the Desalting treatments the $Cl^-$concentration of the solution were measured regularly and the plotted for $Cl^-$concentrations the square root of time, heating methods showed that the $Cl^-$ ions are more extracted. For the desalting treatments these plots were found to be flattening line, it was showed the changing second solution. Also, the changing solution in the room temperation detected less $Cl^-$ ions of heating treatment solution. As the examination for the relative humidity has compared for desalting objects during 8 days, it was showed a re-corroded appearance of R.H90%. As it did not detected a $Cl^-$ ions of re-corroded section, these phenomena were showed the naturally occuring corrosion of the objects in the high relative humidity.

  • Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation and the destruction of cartilaginous tissues, primarily involving the ear, nose, and the respiratory tract. Nasal chondritis is present in 24% of patients at the time of diagnosis and develops subsequently in 53% throughout the diseases progress. Progressive destruction of nasal cartilage leads to the characteristic flattening of the nasal bridge, resulting in the saddle nose deformity. In patients with RP, surgical management for saddle nose is carefully decided due to the disease relapsing characteristics. We present a RP patient with a saddle nose deformity who underwent reconstruction rhinoplasty with autologous costal cartilage grafting. At 6-month follow-up, the patient retained good esthetic results and showed neither complication nor relapse of RP.

  • This study investigated the dosimetric effects of different dose calculation algorithm for lung stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) using flattening filter-free (FFF) beams. A total of 10 patients with lung cancer who were treated with SABR were evaluated. All treatment plans were created using an Acuros XB (AXB) of an Eclipse treatment planning system. An additional plans for comparison of different alagorithm recalcuated with anisotropic analytic algorithm (AAA) algorithm. To address both algorithms, the cumulative dose-volume histogram (DVH) was analyzed for the planning target volume (PTV) and organs at risk (OARs). Technical parameters, such as the computation times and total monitor units (MUs), were also evaluated. A comparison analysis of DVHs from these plans revealed the PTV for AXB estimated a higher maximum dose (5.2%) and lower minimum dose (4.2%) than that of the AAA. The highest dose difference observed 7.06% for the PTV $V_{105%}$. The maximum dose to the lung was also slightly larger in the AXB plans. The percentate volumes of the ipsilateral lung ($V_5$, $V_{10}$, $V_{20}$) receiving 5, 10, and 20 Gy were also larger in AXB plans than for AAA plans. However, these parameters were comparable between both AAA and AXB plans for the contralateral lung. The differences of the maximum dose for the spinal cord and heart were also small. The computation time of AXB plans was 13.7% shorter than that of AAA plans. The average MUs were 3.47% larger for AXB plans than for AAA plans. The results of this study suggest that AXB algorithm can provide advantages such as accurate dose calculations and reduced computation time in lung SABR plan using FFF beams, especially for volumetric modulated arc therapy technique.

  • This paper covers finite element simulations to evaluate the bending limit of double pipe for tube-hydroforming. The tube-hydroforming process starts with a straight precut tube. The tube is often prebent in a rotary draw bending machine to fit the hydroforming tool. During the bending the tube undergoes significant deformation. So forming defects such as wrinkling, thinning and flattening are generated in the tube. Consequently we analyzed the effect of process parameters in rotary draw bending process and searched the optimized combination of process parameters to minimize the forming defects using orthogonal arrays. The characteristic to evaluate the effects of the process parameters is the bending angle which wrinkling is generated, we define the bending angle at that time as bending limit. Of many process parameters, the process parameters of the bending process such as gab between inner and outer tube, boosting force, dimensions of mandrel were analyzed. And we observed the deformation modes of bent double pipe at specific bending angle in each parameter combination.

  • A retrospective study of 498 patients (591 joints) who had diagnosed as having internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint by history, clinical examination, and arthrography were evaluated. 66 patients (70 joints) were diagnosed as having meniscus perforation between the joint compartments. In those patients with pain (11 joints : 15.7%), pain and crepitation (24 joints : 34.3%), pain, crepitation and LOM (31 joints : 44.3%), and painless crepitation with LOM (4 joints : 5.7%) complained clinically. All these patients who had perforation showed irregularity in outline of the contrast material, bone contour-contrast material gaps, flattening of cortical layer of articular eminence. On the 20 joints treated surgically, 17 joints were found to have meniscus perforation at the time of surgery which correlated with their pre-operative radiographic and clinical diagnosis. Three joints could not found perforation of meniscus. This study was designed to examine of the incidences of the meniscus perforation in the above patients and to assess the diagnostic accuracy of arthrography by comparing the results with the finding of direct examination at TMJ surgery.

  • Graphene grown on copper-foil substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been attracting interest for sensor applications due to an extraordinary high surface-to-volume ratio and capability of large-scale device fabrication. However, CVD graphene has a polycrystalline structure and a high density of grain boundaries degrading its electrical properties. Recently, processes such as electropolishing for flattening copper substrate has been applied before growth in order to increase the grain size of graphene. In this study, we systemically analyzed the effects of the process condition of electropolishing copper foil on the quality of CVD graphene. We observed that electropolishing process can reduce surface roughness of copper foil, increase the grain size of CVD graphene, and minimize the density of double-layered graphene regions. However, excessive process time can rather increase the copper foil surface roughness and degrade the quality of CVD graphene layers. This work shows that an optimized electropolishing process on copper substrates is critical to obtain high-quality and uniformity CVD graphene which is essential for practical sensor applications.

  • Protoplast fusion is a useful technique for establishing fungal hybrids to overcome the natural barriers. The ultrastructure of protoplast and its fusion process were observed using a scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and a transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The protoplasts were variable in size from $0.5{\sim}15{\mu}m$ in diameter, and the mean diameter was about $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$. It was impossible to discriminate protoplasts of Lentinula edodes from protoplasts of Coriolus versicolor by size and surface structure. Big aggregates of the dehydrated protoplasts were observed, after polyethylene glycol 4000 treatment. Nucleus, mitochondria, lipid granules and various vesicles having granules were scattered in the cytoplasm. The vesicles were heterogeneous in size and vary from one protoplast to another. The fused membrane layer of the two protoplasts was observed. Time protoplast membrane contact and reorganization of membrane components were essential condition for protoplast fusion. Transmission electron micrograph showed fused protoplasts and flattening of the cells in the area of the membrane contact. We hope that our electron microscopic observations provide some insights into the understanding of the fusion process of protoplast in fungi.

  • In this research, for the first time, a new optimization method, i.e., strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm II (SPEA-II), is developed for the burnable poison placement (BPP) optimization of a nuclear reactor core. In the BPP problem, an optimized placement map of fuel assemblies with burnable poison is searched for a given core loading pattern according to defined objectives. In this work, SPEA-II coupled with a nodal expansion code is used for solving the BPP problem of Kraftwerk Union AG (KWU) pressurized water reactor. Our optimization goal for the BPP is to achieve a greater multiplication factor ($K_{eff}$) for gaining possible longer operation cycles along with more flattening of fuel assembly relative power distribution, considering a safety constraint on the radial power peaking factor. For appraising the proposed methodology, the basic approach, i.e., SPEA, is also developed in order to compare obtained results. In general, results reveal the acceptance performance and high strength of SPEA, particularly its new version, i.e., SPEA-II, in achieving a semioptimized loading pattern for the BPP optimization of KWU pressurized water reactor.

  • In this paper, we introduce the implied volatility from Black-Scholes model and suggest a model for constructing implied volatility surfaces by using the two-dimensional cubic (bi-cubic) spline. In order to utilize a spline method, we acquire grid (knot) points. To this end, we first extract implied volatility curves weighted by trading contracts from market option data and calculate grid points from the extracted curves. At this time, we consider several conditions to avoid arbitrage opportunity. Then, we establish an implied volatility surface, making use of the two-dimensional cubic spline method with previously estimated grid points. The method is shown to satisfy several properties of the implied volatility surface (smile, skew, and flattening) as well as avoid the arbitrage opportunity caused by simple match with market data. To show the merits of our proposed method, we conduct simulations on market data of S&P500 index European options with reasonable and acceptable results.
