  • Post-punching resistance of a flat slab can help redistribute the gravity loads and resist progressive collapse of a structure following initial damage. One important difficulty with accounting for the post-punching strength of a slab is the discontinuity that develops following punching shear. A numerical simulation technique is proposed here to model and evaluate post-punching resistance of flat slabs. It is demonstrated that the simulation results of punching shear and post-punching response of the model of a slab on a single column are in good agreement with corresponding experimental data. It is also shown that progressive collapse due to a column removal (explosion) can lead to punching failure over an adjacent column. Such failure can propagate throughout the structure leading to the progressive collapse of the structure. Through post-punching modeling of the slab and accounting for the associated discontinuity, it is also demonstrated that the presence of an adequate amount of integrity reinforcement can provide an alternative load path and help resist progressive collapse.

  • Serviceability of reinforced concrete building is affected dominantly by long term deflection of slab. And in case of reinforced concrete building with flat plate slab, severe long term deflection was expected because it has no beams which have large flexural stiffness. Therefore it is important to calculate exactly long term deflection of RC flat plate structure to assure its serviceability. However, current codes couldn't calculate exactly long term deflection of RC flat plate structure because they don't consider effects of boundary condition and construction load. By the way, recently the method to calculate long term deflection of RC flat plate structure was proposed by considering these effects. In the present study, long term deflection of RC flat plate structure was analyzed by comparing this method with recent experimental results. In conclusion, long term deflection of RC flat plate structure was affected considerably by effects of boundary condition, construction load and tensile strength of concrete. And recently proposed method considers these effects reasonably but it should be modified to reflect creep effect of RC flat plate slab reasonably.

  • Effective beam width models are commonly used to obtain the lateral stiffness of flat plate structures. In these models, an effective beam width is defined as the width when the flexural stiffness of the beam element equals the slab stiffness. In this present study, a method to obtain effective beam widths that considers the effects of connection geometry and slab cracking is analytically proposed. The rectangularity of the vertical member for the connection geometry and the combined effects of creep and shrinkage for the slab cracking are considered. The results from the proposed method are compared with experimental results from a test structure having nine slab-column connections.

  • Flat plate structures are designed in the form of long span due to the development of construction materials and the improvement of construction technology. However, a high-rise structure of a flat plate of 50 less floors is constructed without detailed review of the inequality shortening, long-term deflection of the slab, and cracks. Therefore, it is possible to examine the case of defects in the structure due to deformation and damage of non-structures such as crack and leak, deflection of the door frame, and deformation of equipment ducts. In this study, it is a high-rise structure, and the inequality shortening and long-term deflection of the slab of the flat plate structure were evaluated through finite element analysis, and it was confirmed that prior precision analysis and correction during construction is necessary.

  • The study is an experimental test on full-scale flat plate slab-column interior connection. The punching shear on the flat plate slab-column connection can bring about the reason of the brittle punching shear failure which may result of collapsing the whole structure. From the development of residential flat plate system, the shear reinforcement is developed for preventing the punching shear. For making sure of the punching shear capacity, developed for shear reinforcement in slab-column connection, the structural test is performed. The dimension of the slabs was 2620*2725*180mm with square column (600*800mm). The slabs were tested up to failure monotonic vertical shear forces. The presences of S/S bar and wire mesh substantially increased the punching shear capacity and the ductility of the slab-column connections.

  • Effective beam width model (EBWM) has been used for analysis of post-tensioned (PT) flat plate slab frames under lateral loads. For analyzing PT flat plate slab structure under lateral loads with good precision, reduction in slab stiffness has to be accurately estimated for Effective beam width model(EBWM). For this purpose, this study collected test results of PT flat plate system conducted by former researches. And this study reduced the width of slab so that the stiffness of the EBWM converged into the lateral stiffness of each test specimens by trial and error. By conducting nonlinear regression analysis, an equation for calculating stiffness reduction factor for the PT flat plate is proposed.

  • In this paper the seismic performance of a flat plate wall system structure was evaluated based on the ATC-63 approach, and the results were compared with those of a wall slab structure having the same size. As analysis model structures, a twelve story flat plate wall structure and a wall slab structure were designed based on the KBC-2009, and their seismic performances and collapse behaviors were evaluated by nonlinear static and incremental dynamic analyses(IDA). It was observed that the flat plate wall structure was designed with smaller amount of reinforced concrete, and showed slightly larger displacement response compared with those of the wall slab structure. The collapse margin ratios of the two structures obtained from the incremental dynamic analyses satisfied the limit states specified in the ATC-63, and the structures turned out to have enough capacity to resist the design level seismic load.

  • Recently the construction of high-rise reinforced concrete building is progressively increased as the social demands. It is significantly important factors such as economy, the safety of structure, and the flexibility of internal space. Therefore new structural system is also required to be attained the reduction of story height, the flexibility and efficient use of space. The most suitable structural system is with the economy and flexibility, flat plate slab system in high-rise reinforced concrete building. In this research, it was focused in the improvement of shear performance in the flat plate system using high ductile fiber reinforced mortar. It was evaluated the shear performance in the critical region of slab-column connection. The flat plate system, designed by the high performance and safety, was developed as a new technique in the application of high-rise R/C building.

  • Recently, the flat-plate structure is widely used because it has many advantages such as reduction of story height, long span etc than the RC rahmen structure. Furthermore, application of the flat-plate is on the increase because of flexible plan unlike wall structure. Long span have been at a disadvantage for vibration serviceability evaluation, however studies about vertical direction vibration of flat-plate structure has not been carried out. This study analysis the characteristics according to slab structure to make an experiment on vibration and floor impact noise for the flat-plate structure in construction performance laboratory in Kolon E&C R&D center, the flat-plate structure applied to the post-tension method, and the wall structure in apartment houses.

  • In the previous paper, authors proposed the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM) for the lateral behavior analysis of the flat plate structure subjected to the combined gravity and lateral loads, in which the rotations of torsional members were distributed to the equivalent column and the equivalent slab according to the relative ratio of gravity and lateral loads. In this paper, the lateral behavior of the multi-span flat plate structures under various levels of combined gravity and lateral loads were analyzed by the proposed UEFM, which were compared with test results as well as those estimated by existing models. In addition, to consider the stiffness degradation of the flat plate system after cracking, the stiffness reduction factors for torsional members were derived from the test results of the interior and exterior slab-column connection specimens, based on which the simplified nonlinear push-over analysis method for flat plate structures was proposed. The simplified nonlinear analysis method provided good agreements with test results and is considered to be very useful for the practical design of the flat plate structures under the combined gravity and lateral loads.
