  • We study translation surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space 3 and the Gauss map N with respect to the so-called Cheng-Yau operator ☐. As a result, we prove that the only translation surfaces with Gauss map N satisfying ☐N = AN for some 3 × 3 matrix A are the flat ones. We also show that the only translation surfaces with Gauss map N satisfying ☐N = AN for some nonzero 3 × 3 matrix A are the cylindrical surfaces.

  • In this paper, we study a class of spacelike rotational surfaces in the Minkowski 4-space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ with meridian curves lying in 2-dimensional spacelike planes and having pointwise 1-type Gauss map. We obtain all such surfaces with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the first kind. Then we prove that the spacelike rotational surface with flat normal bundle and pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the second kind is an open part of a spacelike 2-plane in $\mathbb{E}^4_1$.

  • This paper presents a straightness measurement system for flat and long workpieces. The measurement system consists of a laser optical unit, a CCD camera and processing system, and a carrier system with a stylus. The carrier system accompanies the stylus, which displaces a retroreflector along the surface profile. The optical unit is used to optically amplify the displacement of retroreflector. The CCD camera and processing system finally identifies the vertical displacement of the stylus unit. The developed system is applied to two surfaces: ground surface and LM guide surface. The experimental results show that the developed system can measure the straightness of flat surfaces within sub-micron error.

  • This study presents the dynamic characteristics of an impinging droplet on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces with various texture area fractions. The flat surface was fabricated by using the drilling technique to make micro-meter hole-patterned surfaces, which shows hydrophobic textured surfaces. Moreover, the hydrophilic textured surfaces were manufactured by anodizing technique on the micro-meter hole-patterned surfaces to generate multi-layer surfaces. Impinging droplet experiments were conducted for various hole-patterned surfaces, with changing impact velocity and texture area fractions. It is observed that an anodizing technique increases wettability by decrease in hole diameter on the textured surfaces. However, micro-drilled surfaces decreases wettability because the hole diameter was so large that air can be trapped under the holes. In addition, the maximum spreading diameter decreases with the texture area fraction for the micro-drilled surfaces because of decrease in wettability.

  • For measuring friction-factor of artificially-roughened surfaces which are usually applied on damper seals, flat plate test apparatus is designed and fabricated. the measurement of leakage and pressure distribution through round-hole pattern specimen with different hole area is described and a method is discussed for determining the friction-factor experimentally. Results show that the friction-factor of the round-hole pattern surfaces is bigger than that of smooth surface and increases as increasing the hole area. A empirical friction factor model for round-hole pattern surface is defined as the Moody's friction factor formula.

  • The mechanism of failure of lubricated surfaces at high sliding speeds was Investigated. Experiments were performed with the ball-on-flat and cylinder-on-flat geometries, using lubricants of four different chemical reactivities. Surface failure was found to not be predictable using the ratlo, $\lambda$, of fluid film thickness to composite surface roughness except when chemically inert lubricants are used. Even then the influence of temperature rise on fluid film thickness does not adequately explain the low load carrying capacity of lubricants at high sliding speeds. which causes surface failure. The protective layers on sliding surfaces that form by chemical reaction with the lubricant were found to reduce the surface roughentrig and Increase the load carrying capacity of surfaces to values of $\lambda$ as low as 0.03. • The friction and wear behavior of undulated surfaces made of tin base babbit are examined experimentally at the low sliding speed with severe loading condition. Steel is used as counterface disk material under pin-on-disk type sliding condition. Undulated surfaces can improve the friction and wear properties under dry friction condition since undulated surfaces trap wear particles in their cavities and prohibit wear particles from agglomerating. However, under boundary lubrication condition, friction and wear properties of undulated surfaces are inferior to those of flat surfaces. It is shown that land width and the ratio of wear volume to cavity volume are the most important factors in friction behavior of undulated surfaces under dry friction condition, and there exists optimum land width minimizing friction and wear of undulated surfaces.
