  • A new mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp with a single cell having dimension 2.2inches across the diagonal, had been developed which shows a wide, stable operating voltage margin, high luminance and luminous efficacy by adopting the bipolar pulse drive scheme. In this paper, the single cell is expanded into a multi-structured configuration to realize a 32inch sized panel across the diagonal by a simple repetition of the single cells. A driving scheme is proposed for a 2-bit areal selective dimming using dual auxiliary electrodes and bipolar drive scheme.

  • A Mercury-free, flat light source which shows high luminance and luminous efficiency simultaneously has been developed. An electrodeless, dielectric barrier discharge is used to generate the plasma using Ne-Xe mixture gas of relatively low gas pressure of a few tens torr in a 4.1 inch diagonal size of flat panel. The basic properties of the long gap glow discharge and its accompanying instabilities, which prevents us from having high luminous efficiency discharge have been analyzed. A new structure and optimized driving methods have been used to generate a glow discharge which shows a wide voltage margin of a few hundred volts. The luminous efficiency and luminance could be 110 lm/W at $1300\;cd/m^2$ and 50 lm/W at $5500\;cd/m^2$.

  • Various types of dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) devices have been developed for diverse applications for the last decade. In this study, a flat non-thermal DBD micro plasma source under atmospheric pressure has been developed. The flat-panel type plasma is generated by bipolar pulse voltages, and driving gas is air. In this study, the plasma source was investigated with intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) images and Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES). The micro discharges are generated on the crossed electrodes. For theoretical analysis, 2-dimensional fluid simulation was performed. The plasma source can be driven in air, and thus the operation cost is low and the range of application is wide.

  • Flat panel display manufacturers are always investigating new techniques to improve productivity and reliability. For fluid dispense processes, Jet dispensing has shown benefits over traditional needle dispensing. Recent advancements in nozzle design and construction techniques enable jet dispensing capabilities far exceeding what has been previously achieved.

  • As OLED manufacturing matures, it requires larger substrate processing. The larger substrates require higher dispensing throughput for UV sealants. Jetting the gaskets of seal materials has provided an increase in performance and dispensing capability. This paper describes the jetting process and deposition capability for applying the UV sealants.

  • A flat panel field sequential 3D display can be made by illuminating a ferroelectric liquid crystal display with scanning illumination passed through a transparent slab embossed with a grating. The concept is expected to enable wide fields of view, sharp discrimination between views, little blurring at depth, and no repetition of views.

  • CRTs can survive in the long run for TV applications, because of their realistic reproduction of live images. CRT technology development has to be directed towards form factor, but also attention has to be paid to the form design of sets. The CRT is the only technology allowing a doubly curved screen surface.
