  • The one-dimensional flame analysis was carried out to understand the combustion phenomena in porous media. The downstream as well as upstream solution corresponding to upper and lower solutions could be obtained. While upper flame temperature gets higher, lower flame temperature gets lower, as the flame approaches the central part of the combustor. The reason why upstream flame and downstream flame exist at the same flow condition is that the regions where net heat recirculation is identical exist in upstream and downstream of the combustor. In order for the downstream flame to be stabilized, more heats needed to be recirculated towards upstream because of larger radiation loss of downstream flame.

  • Experiments on corresponding jet flames with stagnant point diffusion flames have been carried out in initial injection periods. A compensated measurement of maximum flame temperature, which is based on the ion signal, has been employed to inspect flame responses to time-varying strain rates. The flame responses are obtained at two conditions for the slowly time-varying strain rate and the case of flame extinction, and analyzed to confirm similarity between a stagnant point diffusion flame and an evolving jet diffusion flame. Nonsteady effects are addressed via the comparison between several time scales. The time variation with low strain rates, in which illustrates the flame behavior of the upper branch far from extinction in the well-known S-curve, is confirmed to produce a quasi-steady flame response through the nonsteady experiments. The time variation with strain rates in the case of flame extinction indicates an unsteady effect of flame response. It is therefore found that the flame responses near jet tip depend on time histories of characterized strain rates in the developing process.

  • Rayleigh Scattering Cross Sections($\sigma$i) of various gases and the temperature distributions of premixes C3H8/O2 flame are measured by high power KrF(248nm) Exci- mer laser and ICCD camera. Results show that $\sigma$i of O2 and Propane(C3H8) gases agree well in the 5% error range, but of H2 has the more or less difference from the calcul- ated value by other groups. This is attributed to the low RS signal of H2 to Nosie level(S/N ratio). The temperature distributions of flame range out between 300K in the air and about 2000K in the burned area. In this temperature range, out system has the about 250K temperature resolution. Because low RS signals in the reaction area with high temperature are affected highly by noises, temperature uncertainty of this area is relatively high to another part of flame. Experimental results show that UV Rayleigh Scattering can be used for the measurement of mixing ratio of mixed gases and the temperature distributions of flame. Especially, this technique can be applied for the measurement of the mixing ratio of air/fuel before the ignition and the flame structure after the ignition inside the Engine.

  • The swirl flame was investigated experimentally by measuring the temperature distribution, and the combustion gas concentrations. The flame structure of the swirl flame was influenced not by the swirl vane angle but by the swirler position. Due to the momentum loss as the swirler position was moved downward under the nozzle exit, the flame length was increased. Meanwhile the temperature and $CO_2$-concentrations were decreased.

Weed Control by Flame (화염을 이용한 잡초방제 연구)

  • This study was to develop a kerosene flame weeder. An air compressor was driven though the PTO of a tractor to provide necessary air for fuel combustion and proper pressure to supply fuel from fuel tank to the nozzle. It was found that the flame was extinguished very easily by wind and vibration of the tractor. This trouble could be solved by attaching a burner cap, which is a modified venturi tube, at the end of the nozzle. The constructed flame weeder was tested for the weeding capability in the prepared field. Weed extinction rate and weight decrease rate were analysed. Measured maximum flame temperature was 1,121$\^{C}$ when the fuel consumption was 13.41 kg/h and fuel supply pressure was 88.2 kPa. The maximum temperature occurred at 20cm from the front end the burner, and it decreased to 46$\^{C}$ as the distance increased to 110cm. The flame length of up to 70cm, where the flame temperature was higher than 372$\^{C}$, would be used for weeding purpose. Weed extinction rate and weight decreasing rate increased as the fuel consumption increased. The flame weeder was evaluated to be a practical weeder through improvement as the weed extinction rate and weight decrease rate were analysed to be 75% and 85%, respectively when the fuel consumption was 116.87kg/ha.

The Influence of Combustor Atmospheric Pressure on Flame Characteristics (연소실 분위기 압력이 화염형상에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, development of flame control scheme has been hot issues in the combustion engineering. It has been held that flame shape can be controllable by pressure inside combustor. The influence of combustor atmospheric pressure on flame shape was investigated in the present study. The flame shape, flammable limit, flame temperature and nitric oxide emission were measured as functions of combustor atmospheric pressure and equivalence ratio. The reaction region became longer and wider with decreasing combustor atmospheric pressure by direct photography, hence reduction of blow off limit. This tendency was also observed in the mean flame temperature distribution. Nitric oxide emission decreased with decreasing combustor atmospheric pressure. Low NOx combustion is ascribed to wide-spread reaction region in the low atmospheric pressure condition. These results demonstrate that flame shape and nitric oxide emission can be controllable with combustor atmospheric pressure.

Pt Coating on Flame-Generated Carbon Particles (화염법을 이용한 Pt/C 촉매 제조)

  • Carbon black, activated carbon and carbon nanotube have been used as supporting materials for precious metal catalysts used in fuel cell electrodes. One-step flame synthesis method is used to coat 2-5nm Pt dots on flame-generated carbon particles. By adjusting flame temperature, gas flow rates and resident time of particles in flame, we can obtain Pt/C nano catalyst-support composite particles. Additional injection of hydrogen gas facilitates pyrolysis of Pt precursor in flame. The size of as-incepted Pt dots increases along the flame due to longer resident time and sintering in high temperature flame. Surface coverage and dispersion of the Pt dots is varied at different sampling heights and confirmed by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystalinity and surface bonding groups of carbon are investigated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.

  • Sawtooth mixing device used in a non-premixed burner is evaluated for flame stabilization and NO$_{x}$ reduction. Three mixers with different blade angles are tested. Methane is delivered through the fuel jet and air passes through the co-flow annulus. The flame mode changes (attached flame, lifted flame and extinction) against the fuel flow speed are measured, and the stability diagram is drawn. Moreover, by traversing thermocouple and sampling probe in the flame, the distribution of temperature and NO$_{x}$ mole fraction are measured. With the change in blade angle, flame shape, flame stabilization, the distribution of temperature and NO$_{x}$ mole fraction are changed considerably.rably.

  • Edge flames have been interested as a basic structure that is concerned to flame stabilization and re-ignition of non-premixed flames. The edge flame consists of a lean premixed flame, a rich premixed flame, and a diffusion flame. In order to investigate fundamental structures of the edge flames at the conditions near the flammability limits, edge flames were stabilized within a heated narrow channel. Highly diluted partially premixed methane was used, and the flow rates of air and the partially premixed mixture were controlled. Various flame behaviors, including a transition between ordinary edge flames and premixed flames, were observed. Flame stabilization characteristics were examined as well. All flame stabilization conditions in this study showed a similar trend: characteristic time scales were inversely proportional to the equivalence ratio defined at the burner inlet. Finally, an interesting flame structure having a weak diffusion branch enveloped by a closed premixed branch was found near the flammability limits even in a fuel-air mixing layer. This structure was named as a "flame-drop" and the importance of this structure was first suggested.

  • Flame behavior in inner and outer the cavity and flame temperature have an important influence on the formation and oxidation of NOx and soot. Therefore, in this study, the combustion chamber of toroidal and reentrant that have different flow characteristics of inside and outside the cavity and load, and so forth are determined as parameters of experimental conditions. An attempt has been made to obtain the effect of flame temperature and KL value in idler and outer cavity on the formation and oxidation of soot using the two-color method.
