  • Flame retardant(FR) clothes prohibit additional fire diffusion and make the personnel do their tasks without a hitch in a flammable environment. The existing FR clothes, however, are heavy and give high thermal fatigue. Therefore, it is strongly demanded to develop a light, convenient, and eco-friendly clothes. Recently, many works have been reported to make FR fabrics with phosphorus compounds, but their performance could not satisfy the specified criteria in appraisal standards of domestic and American FR clothes or combat uniforms. In this paper, two kinds of phosphorus compounds were applied to cotton fabric. Graphene oxide functionalized with a phosphorus-rich deep eutectic solvent and ammonium polyphosphate were coated on cotton fabric by eco-friendly padding procedure. The coated fabrics were analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis, vertical flame resistance test(ASTM D6413), cone calorimeter test(ISO 5660-1), and method of test for limited flame spread(ISO 15025). It was revealed that the as-made cotton with those two materials simultaneously had better flame resistance than the cottons with each one. Furthermore, an additional coating for hydrophobicity on the FR cotton was tried for better washing fastness.

  • Since vertical flame spread speed on exterior materials is much faster than horizontal fire, analysis of its fire characteristic is required. For the study of vertical fire pattern created by penetrating windows or openings from the exterior wall of buildings, the research is based on the fire simulation for an aluminum-complex-panel with which is commonly used as exterior materials and consists of polyethylene core material. As a result, the flame reaches the 2nd floor after 135 seconds in the early stage of fire, the 10the floor after 470 seconds and the 30th floor, the highest floor, after 711 seconds. The result shows that fire spread abruptly expands on upper floor due to stack effect of a turbulent flow or exterior materials. In consequence, we can confirm a serious problem that a conflagration of a building through an opening that is equipped with the exterior-materials spreads into interior of building at that same time.

  • Recently in Korea, the interest for using window and window-wall in building picks up due to the beauty and utilization of space. But, interior space of the buildings shall be compartmentalized by fire resistance structures in accordance with the Korean building codes to prevent the spread of flame and damage of human life in fire. In case of installing non-insulated glazed window in compartment wall, the flame spread to adjacent space and the damage of human life by radiant heat can occur in fire. On this study, to confirm the risk of radiant heat for non-insulated glazed window in fire, the fire resistance tests were conducted. The temperature rise and heat flux on unexposed space was measured and analyzed.

  • Fires are the most common disaster and early fire detection is of great importance to minimize the consequent damage. Simple sensors including smoke detectors are widely used for the purpose but they are able to sense fires only at close proximity. Recently, due to the rapid advances of relevant technologies, vision-based fire sensing has attracted growing attention. In this paper, a novel visual sensing technique to automatically detect fire is presented. The proposed technique consists of multiple steps of image processing: pixel-level, block-level, and frame level. At the first step, fire flame pixel candidates are selected based on their color values in YIQ space from the image of a camera which is installed as a vision sensor at a fire scene. At the second step, the dynamic parts of flames are extracted by comparing two consecutive images. These parts are then represented in regularly divided image blocks to reduce pixel-level detection error and simplify following processing. Finally, the temporal change of the detected blocks is analyzed to confirm the spread of fire. The proposed technique was tested using real fire images and it worked quite reliably.

  • The utilization of LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is increasing as an environmental-friendly fuel in all countries making green growth new paradigm, and use of gas is spread fast as motor fuels to decrease air pollution. Loss of lives by explosion and fire is happening every year as gas use increases, and gas accident in large scale storage property is causing serious problems socially. To minimize this problem, underground containment type storage tank is being presented as an alternative recently. In this study, to minimize explosion occurrence in underground containment type storage tank, the suitable storage tank is designed to consider explosion prevention that makes exposure surface area minimize in confined contents volume and flame to construct storage tank by the most suitable condition in the underground containment room. As a result of the design of storage tank having the most suitable condition by this research, underground containment space was minimized on diameter 3m, length 4.83m in 20 tons storage tank and its safety was improved as exposure surface area in flame decreased by 89.4%, compared with the existent storage tank.

  • The fire at a Busan indoor shooting range on November 14, 2009 was reconstructed by using a computational fluid dynamics model for fire simulations, in order to investigate the cause of the heavy death toll in a short period of time. Spread of the flame and smoke, and temperature distribution obtained by fire simulation were compared with the results of fire investigation based on the CCTV recordings. The flame and smoke flew out violently through the door into the cafeteria from the shooting range, and the cafeteria was filled with smoke just within 3 seconds followed by the onset of fire. This is consistent with the CCTV recordings. It was confirmed, as a result, that people in the cafeteria did not have enough evacuation time. The computed temperature at the door knob reached about $1400^{\circ}C$, near its melting point.

  • To define an interface in a conventional level-set method, an analytical function must be revealed for an interfacial geometry. However, it is not always possible to define a functional form of level sets when interfaces become complex in a Cartesian coordinate system. To overcome this difficulty, we have developed a new level-set formalism that discriminates the interior from the exterior of a CAD modeled interface by parameterizing the stereolithography (STL) file format. The work outlined here confirms the accuracy and scalability of the hydrodynamic reactive solver that utilizes the new level set concept through a series of tests. In particular, the complex interaction between shock and geometrical confinements towards deflagration-to-detonation transition is numerically investigated. Also, a process of flame spreading and damages caused by point source detonation in a real-sized plant facility have been simulated to confirm the validity of the new method built for reactive hydrodynamic simulation in any complex three-dimensional geometries.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the damage patterns of cellular phone (SCH_W830) batteries according to energy sources and have them utilized as data for the settlement of disputes between manufactures and consumers. The reliability was secured by maintaining the ambient temperature and humidity at $22{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 40~60 %, respectively. The voltage of the battery used for the tests was measured to be 4.18V between positive pole (+) and negative pole (-)(1), and 4.19 V between positive pole (+) and negative pole (-)(2). This study applied the Korean Industrial Standard (KS) to the flammability test of cellular phones due to a general flame applied to them and found that no damage occurred to the built-in battery even though the flame was applied to the cases of cellular phones for 30 seconds. From the results of immersing the cellular phones in the saline solution (NaCl, 0.9 %) for 180 seconds, it was found that there was a trace of carbonization and melting due to the heat caused by leaking current. It can be seen that when the cellular phones were heated for 70 seconds using a microwave oven (MWO), the areas containing the metal holder, recharging connector, antenna, etc., were melted and discolored and that other areas showed no particular problems. That is, while the external carbonization of cellular phones, built-in metals and dielectric materials, and damage and deformation of the battery terminal block, etc., occurred differently depending on the types of energy sources, the voltage showed comparatively constant characteristics. Therefore, it is thought to be possible to attribute the cause of damage to the battery by performing analysis taking into consideration comprehensively the characteristics of the flame spread pattern as well as the melting and deformation of metals.
