Models of upward flame spread have been attempted in the past, but in the current work an emphasis has been placed on developing a practical model that will be useful across a broad range of materials. Some of the important aspects of the model we: the addition of external radiation to simulate a wall that is a part of an enclosure fire and has flaming walls radiating to it, the use of a correlation for flame heat feedback distribution to the sample surface based on data available in the literature, and the use of an experimentally measured mass loss rate for the sample material, In this paper, the development of the numerical model is presented along with predictions of flame spread for three materials: hardboard, a relatively homogeneous wood-based material; plywood, which is made of laminated wood bonded by adhesives; and a composite material made of fiberglass matrix embedded in epoxy. Predictions are compared with measured data at several levels of external radiation for each material. For the materials tested, the model correctly predicts trends and does a reasonable job predicting flame heights. The need for thermal property data for practical materials, which would be appropriate for flame spread models, is indicated by this work.
The effects of laser heating on soot formation and oxidation of propylene diffusion flames have been studied experimentally under nearly sooting conditions. The non-sooting flame can be converted to a sooting flame when the laser light heats up a flame at 7 mm height, while a sooting flame can be changed to a non-sooting flame when a flame is heated with laser light at flame height of 13 mm. The selective heating at the soot formation and/or oxidation region determines the sooting behavior of a diffusion flame. The increased soot/flame temperatures are most likely to be responsible for both the decreased and increased soot formation/oxidation.

The one-dimensional flame analysis was carried out to understand the combustion phenomena in porous media. The downstream as well as upstream solution corresponding to upper and lower solutions could be obtained. While upper flame temperature gets higher, lower flame temperature gets lower, as the flame approaches the central part of the combustor. The reason why upstream flame and downstream flame exist at the same flow condition is that the regions where net heat recirculation is identical exist in upstream and downstream of the combustor. In order for the downstream flame to be stabilized, more heats needed to be recirculated towards upstream because of larger radiation loss of downstream flame.

Flame characteristics of a methane-air premixed flame stabilized in a heat-regenerative small combustor were investigated experimentally. A small combustor having two counter-current shallow channels and a combustion space at one side was developed. In which the channel-gap was less the ordinary quenching distance of a stoichiometric methane-air premixed flame. Two design parameters of channel gap and thickness of the middle wall, which is located between two channels for unburned and burned gases, were varied. Flame stabilization conditions and characteristic flame behaviors were experimentally examined. Conclusively, Blowout conditions were governed mostly by the scale of the combustion space, and flashback conditions into the channel are dominated by the channel gap. Surface temperatures of the combustor were between 100 to 500$^{\circ}C$. Additionally, two distinctive flame stabilization modes of radiation and well-stirred?reaction were observed and their applicability was discussed.

Oxy-methane nonpremixed flames diluted with $CO_2$ were investigated to clarify impact of radiation heat loss and chemical effects of additional $CO_2$ to oxidizer stream on flame extinction. Flame stability maps were presented with functional dependencies of critical diluents mole fraction upon global strain rate at several oxidizer stream temperatures in $CH_4-O_2/N_2$, $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$, and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ counterflow flames. The effects of radiation heat loss on the critical diluent mole fractions for flame extinction are not significant even at low strain rate in nonpremixed $CH_4-O_2/N_2$ diffusion flame, whereas those are significant at low strain rate and are negligible at high strain rate (> $200s^{-1}$) in $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$ and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ counterflow flames. Chemical effects of additional $CO_2$ to oxidizer stream on the flame extinction curves were appreciable in both $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$ and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ flames. A scaling analysis based on asymptotic solution of stretched flame extinction was applied. A specific radical index, which could reflect the OH population in main reaction zone via controlling the mixture composition in the oxidizer stream, was identified to quantify the chemical kinetic contribution to flame extinction. A good correlation of predicted extinction limits to those calculated numerically were obtained via the ratio between radical indices and oxidizer Lewis numbers for the target and baseline flames. This offered an effective approach to estimate extinction strain rate of nonpremixed oxy-methane flames permitting air infiltration when the baseline flame was taken to nonpremixed $CH_4-O_2/N_2$ flame.
The characteristics of opposed nonpremixed tubular flames with radiation heat loss are investigated using linear stability analysis and 2-D numerical simulations. Two extinction limits, as the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number is small or large, are confirmed using finite difference method with a simple continuation method. It is verified that the results of linear stability analysis predict the number of flame cells and the critical Da starting cellular instability or amplification of temperature near both extinction limits with good resolution.

Oxy-fuel combustion of pulverized coal is one of the promising new technologies to reduce $CO_2$ and NOx from coal combustion. However, the stability of pulverized coal flame is reduced in the oxy-fuel combustion. This flame stability is concerned with the flame propagation that is affected by surrounding gas and coal characteristics, such as gas temperature, gas composition, coal volatile, coal activation energy and coal size. In this paper, a study on the influence of surrounding gas and coal characteristics on the flame propagation velocity in oxy-fuel combustion of pulverized coal was preformed. One dimensional model was used to calculate the flame propagation velocity of pulverized coal clouds. In this model, the radiation is considered to be the main source of heat exchange, and Monte Carlo method was adopted for accurate calculation of radiation heat flux. It was found that the flame propagation velocity become higher with the decrease of coal activation energy and the increase of coal volatile. Also, according to the increase of gas temperature and $O_2$ concentration, flame propagation velocity increased.

Numerical simulation of $CO_2$ addition effects to fuel and oxidizer streams on flame structure has been conducted with detailed chemistry in H$_2$-O$_2$ diffusion flames of a counterflow configuration. An artificial species, which displaces added $CO_2$ in the fuel- and oxidizer-sides and has the same thermochemical, transport, and radiation properties to that of added $CO_2$, is introduced to extract pure chemical effects in flame structure. Chemical effects due to thermal dissociation of added $CO_2$ causes the reduction flame temperature in addition to some thermal effects. The reason why flame temperature due to chemical effects is larger in cases of $CO_2$ addition to oxidizer stream is well explained though a defined characteristic strain rate. The produced CO is responsible for the reaction, $CO_2$+H=CO+OH and takes its origin from chemical effects due to thermal dissociation. It is also found that the behavior of produced CO mole fraction is closely related to added $CO_2$ mole fraction, maximum H mole fraction and its position, and maximum flame temperature and its position.
A flame detector responds either to radiant energy visible to the human eye or outside the range of human vision. Such a detector is sensitive to glowing embers, coals, or flames which radiate energy of sufficient intensity and spectral quality to actuate the alarm. An infra-red detectors can respond to the total IR component of the flame alone or in combination with flame flicker in the frequency range of 5 to 30 Hz. A major problem in the use of infrared detectors receiving total IR radiation is the possible interference of solar radiation in the infrared region. When detectors are located in places shielded from the sun, such as vaults, filtering or shielding the unit from the sun's rays is unnecessary. In this study, we proposed method for redue a false alarm with using filtering & sensor technology for distinguish of causes of raise a false alarm and pure flame.
The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the fuel-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Numerical results indicate that for highly diluted case, the flame structure is dominantly influenced by the turbulence-chemistry interaction and marginally modified by the radiation effect. On the other hand, no-dilution case with the longer flight time and the relatively intermediate scalar dissipation rate is influenced strongly by the radiative cooling as well as moderately by the turbulence-chemistry interaction.
