In this study, three turbulent flame propagation models are compared using experimentally measured data of a 4 valves/cylinder spark-ignition engine. First two conventional models are B.K model and GESIM combustion model. The burning rates calculated from the two models are compared with the burning rates calculated from measured pressure data using the one-zone heat release analysis. GESIM combustion model predicts burning rates closer to the data acquired from the experiment in wide operating ranges than B-K model does. The third model is refined based on GESIM combustion model by including the effect of flame stretch, turbulent length scale band pass filter and a variable that considers flame size and the area of flame contacting the cylinder wall surface. The refined combustion model predicts burning rates closer to experimental results than GESIM combustion model does. Also, the refined combustion model predicts flame radius close to the experimental result measured by using optical fiber technique.

The unsteady heat release characteristics play a significant role in combustion instabilities observed in low emissions gas turbine combustors. Such combustion instabilities are often caused by coupling mechanisms between unsteady heat release rates and acoustic perturbations. A generalized model of the turbulent flame response to acoustic perturbations is analytically formulated by considering a distributed heat release along a curved mean flame front and using the flame's kinematic model that incorporates the turbulent flame development. The effects of the development of flame speed on the flame transfer functions are examined by calculating the transfer functions with a constant or developing flame speed. The flame transfer function due to velocity fluctuation shows that, when a developing flame speed is used, the transfer function magnitude decreases faster with Strouhal number than the results with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. The flame transfer function due to mixture ratio fluctuation, however, exhibits the opposite results: the transfer function magnitude with a developing flame speed increases faster than that with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. Oscillatory behaviors of both transfer function magnitudes are shown to be damped when a developing flame speed is used. Both transfer functions also show similar behaviors in the phase characteristics: The phases of both transfer functions with a developing flame speed increase more rapidly than those with a constant flame speed.
Three-dimensional numerical analysis of the turbulent premixed flame propagation in a constant volume combustion chamber is performed using the KIVA-3V code (Amsden et. al. 1997) by the flame surface density (FSD) model. A simple near-wall boundary condition is eaployed to describe the interaction between turbulent premixed flame and the wall. A mean stretch factor is introduced to include the stretch and curvature effects of turbulence. The results from the FSD model are compared with the experimental results of schlieren photos and pressure measurements. It is found that the burned mass rate and flame propagation by the FSD model are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The FSD combustion model proved to be effective for description of turbulent premixed flames.
A prediction performance of Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS) developed by NIST for the diffusion flame structure was validated with experimental results of a laminar slot jet diffusion flame. Two mixture fraction combustion models and two finite chemistry combustion models were used in the FDS simulation for the validation of the jet diffusion flame structure. In order to enhance the prediction performance of flame structure, DNS and radiation model was applied to the simulation. The reaction rates of the finite chemistry combustion models were appropriately adjusted to the diffusion flame. The mixture fraction combustion model predicted the diffusion flame structure reasonably. A 1-step finite chemistry combustion model cannot predict the flame structure well, but the simulation results of a 2-step model were in good agreement with those of experiment except $CO_2$ concentration. It was identified that the 2-step model can be used in the investigation of flame suppression limit with further adjustment of reaction rates
A turbulent combustion model, based on edge flame dynamics, is discussed in order to predict global extinction of turbulent flames. The model is applicable to the broken flamelet regime of turbulent combustion, in which global extinction of turbulent flame is achieved by gradual expansion of flame holes. The edge flame dynamics is the key mechanism to describe the flame hole expansion or contraction. For flames with Lewis numbers near unity, there is a $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, namely the crossover $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, at which edge flame changes its direction of propagation. The parametric region between the quasi-steady extinction condition and the edge-flame crossover condition is a metastable region, in that flames without edge can stay in their burning states while flames with edge have to retract to expand quenching holes. Using the above properties of edge flame, Hartley and Dold proposed a Lagrangian hole dynamics, which allows us to simulate transient variation of quenching holes. In their model, each stoichiometric surface is subjected to a random sequence of scalar dissipation rate compatible to the equilibrium turbulence. Then, each stoichiometric surface will evolve, according to the combustion map, dependent on the scalar dissipation rate and existence of flame edge, If all the burning surfaces are annihilated, the event can be declared as a global extinction. The consequence obtained from the above model also can be used as a subgrid model to determine local extinction occurring in a calculation grid.
Large eddy simulation of turbulent premixed flame in turbulent channel flow is studied by using G-equation. A flamelet model for the premixed flame is combined with a dynamic subgrid combustion model for the filtered propagation flame speed. The objective of this work is to investigate the validity of the dynamic subgrid G-equation model to a complex turbulent premixed flame. The effect of model parameters of the dynamic sub grid G-equation on the turbulent flame speed is investigated. In order to consider quenching of laminar flames on the wall, wall-quenching damping function is employed in this calculation. In the present study, a constant density turbulent channel flow is used. The calculation results are evaluated by comparing with the DNS results of Bruneaux et al.
Partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics to develope a prediction model for the turbulent lift off. The present study is specifically aimed to remedy the problem of the stiff transition of the conditioned partial burning probability across the crossover condition by adopting level-set method which describes propagating or retreating flame front with specified propagation speed. In light of the level-set simulations with two model problems for the propagation speed, the stabilizing conditions for a turbulent lifted flame are suggested. The flame hole dynamics combined with level-set method yields a temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its partial quenching characteristics is compared with the results of the previous model employing the flame-hole random walk mapping. The probability to encounter reacting' state, conditioned with scalar dissipation rate, demonstrated that the conditional probability has a rather gradual transition across the crossover scalar dissipation rate in contrast to the stiff transition of resulted from the flame-hole random walk mapping and could be attributed to the finite response of the flame edge propagation.

The transient process simplified by the 1-D stretched laminar flame formed at the fuel-oxidizer interface was investigated using the coherent flame sheet model. Under the combustion environment of high temperatures and pressures the results show that the time required to reach the steady state was relatively short compared to the reverse of strain rate. Hence the employment of the tabulation of precalculated steady-flame results in the calculation of turbulent diffusion flames using the coherent flame sheet model is concluded valid, Also upstream temperatures were found to have only a minor effect on the nondimensional flame temperature and nondimensional fuel even through the letter is sensitive to pressure changes.

With the introduction of Fractal notation, various fields of engineering adopted fractal notation to express characteristics of geometry involved and one of the most frequently applied areas was turbulence. With research on turbulence regarding the surface as fractal geometry, attempts to analyze turbulent premised flame as fractal geometry also attracted attention as a tool for modeling, for the flame surface can be viewed as fractal geometry. Experiments focused on disclosure of flame characteristics by measuring fractal parameters were done by researchers. But robust principle or theory can't be extracted. Only reported modeling efforts using fractal dimension is flame speed model by Gouldin. This model gives good predictions of flame speed in unstrained case but not in highly strained flame condition. In this research, approaches regarding fractal dimension of flame as one representative value is pointed out as a reason for the absence of robust model. And as an extort to establish robust modeling, Presents methods treating fractal dimension as statistical variable. From this approach flame characteristics reported by experiments such as Da effect on flame structure can be seen quantitatively and shows possibility of flame modeling using fractal parameters with statistical method. From this result more quantitative model can be derived.
The objectives of the study are to investigate the effect of swirl on the flame propagation and to propose a flame propagation model that predicts the behavior of the flame front in the presence of significant swirl flow field by analyzing flame images pictured with a high speed digital video at idle. The velocity distribution of the charge in the cylinder was measured using an LDV measurement system. From the experimental results and analyses, a new flame propagation model is proposed in which flame frontal locations can be traced by superposing the convective flow field and the uniform expansion speed of the burned gas, and the proposed model reveals that the increase of the flame propagation speed on the presence of swirl motion within 1 ms after ignition is mainly due to the flame stretch, and mainly due to increased turbulence intensity later than 1 ms after ignition.
