  • A new type breakwater is developed for small scale harbors and fishing ports with low design wave and soft ground. The structure of the developed breakwater is similar to the soldier pile used in soil excavation. Structural performance of the new type breakwater can not be accurately evaluated by numerical analysis due to nonlinearity of joints between piles and honelasticity of soil support. Therefore, this paper investigates the structural performance of the breakwater with experimental method and compares the results with numerical analysis.

  • The use of satellite remote sensing in maritime safety and security can aid in the detection of illegal fishing activities and provide more efficient use of limited aircraft or patrol craft resources. In the area of vessel traffic monitoring for commercial vessels, Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) which use the ground-based radar system have some difficulties in detecting moving ships due to the limited detection range. A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident such as collision and stranding from happening. Existing VTS has its limit. The virtual vessel traffic control system consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress based on the satellite data, remotely sensed data. And it could be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If environmental stress values are simulated for the ship information derived from satellite data, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. Since optical sensor has a high spatial resolution, JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information. We present an algorithm of automatic identification of ship size and velocity. This paper lastly introduce the field testing results of ship detection by RADARSAT SAR imagery, and propose a new approach for a Vessel Monitoring System(VMS), including VTS, and SAR combination service.

  • This study documented and diagnosed the status and problems of coastal dredging and offshore disposal of dredged sediments in South Korea to improve assessment procedures for marine environmental impacts and develop effective management systems. A total of $729({\times}10^6)m^3$ of coastal sediment was dredged in the harbors during the period of 2001-2008. Most of dredged sediment was disposed to the land dumping sites whereas ocean disposal accounted for less than 5%. Ocean disposal areas were especially concentrated to the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the southeast of Busan, which is not only an important fishing area for fishermen, but also considered to be spawning and nursery ground for some commercial fish species. To minimize negative impacts of dredging and ocean disposal of coastal sediment on marine ecosystem and potential strife among coastal users, we suggest 1) in development projects involving ocean disposal, it should be mandatory to propose careful reuse plans in the land, and 2) guidelines of environmental assessment and consequence management programs should be developed and implemented.

  • A study on the species composition and seasonal variations of fishery creatures caught by a funnel net was carried out in the coastal water off Dolsan Island, Yeosu from 2002 to 2003. During the study period, a total of 23 fishery creatures species were caught. Seabream(Acanthopagrus schlegeli), sea bass(Lateolabrax japonicus), mullet(Mugil cephalus), puffer(Takifugu niphobles) and rockfish(Sebastes inermis) predominated. These five species accounted for 85.1% of the total number of fishery creatures caught. Seasonal peaks of number of species occurred in summer, while those of number of individuals occurred in autumn. The lowest number of species and individuals were observed in winter. The large annual variation of diversity indices were observed from May to August. These large annual variation of diversity indices were mainly due to predominance of seabream, sea bass and mullet which accounted for most of all fishery creatures caught. The seasonal variations of fishery creatures showed that sea bass and mullet were caught mainly from spring to summer, seabream and puffer were caught mainly in autumn, and rockfish and brotula(Hoplobrotula armata) were caught mainly in winter.

  • I have outlined the history of Korean Fisheries Co - coperatives and its economic and noneconomic contribution to Korean Fisheries. But in order to overcome new economic world trend that is emerging now with the beginning of the WTO Korean Fisheries Co - operatives should change itself. It can be summarlized as follows. (1) The early Korean Fisheries Co - operatives was monopolized by Japanese under the Japanese colonial rule. (2) The modern Korean Fisheries Co - operatives was organized in 1962. 4. 1 by Korean government. (3) Korean Fisheries Co - operatives was weak in democratic management because of socioeconomic bad condition. (4) In spite of the dependence on the government financial aid Korean Fisheries Co - operatives has contributed to the fisheries development. (5) At the aid of the credit undertaking economic project was enlarged greatly, (6) With the close of the UR talks we cannot but open out fisheries market. So we are in condition that must enforce out fisheries compatability. especially, \circled1 Improvement of fisheries structure to enlarge management scale \circled2 Increase of productivity in fishing ground \circled3 The continuous endeavour to positive marine resourses making (7) Reorganization of fisheries, for example fisheries system or fisheries structure (8) Reexamination of the organization and operation of Korean Fisheries Co - operatives. And taking a proper step to improve their weak points. (9) The strengthening of the activity of investigation and study in centural Fisheries Co - operatives (10) It needs a special study to establish a few target or object in the management of Fisheries Co - operatives. When we could solve these ones mentioned above our fisheries will develop again.

  • This study is to survey the Japanese investigations for Korean sea during Meiji period. Meiji government was eager to develop new fishing ground to provide the marine products to their people, to offer the job for their people and to accumulate the starting capital. They found that the Korean sea was abundant in shark, sea cucumber and ear shell. These products were valuable for Chinese foods. From 1870's, Japan Navy investigated Korean sea for military purpose and subsequently for fishery. The first investigation for Korean maritime products was The Circumstances for Catching Fish in Korean Sea by Sekizawa Akikiyo in 1893. He was the most famous specialist in fishery and insisted that Japanese fishermen must go to Korean sea and catch fishes. Meiji government accepted his opinion and pushed the policy sending fishermen to Korean sea. Meiji government enlarged the investigations and backed up the activities of fisherman and the organization for fishery in Korean sea. Especially, the investigations by The Association for Korean Sea Fishery were repeated and detailed(1897~1900). The Association intervened the conflicts between Korean and Japanese fishermen. At the same time, The Association investigated the attitudes of Korean people to Japanese. The Guidelines for Fishery in Korean Sea by Kuzuu Syuzo was also very detail, especially in the kinds of fishes in Korean sea. These investigations were supported by Meiji government or organizations helped by government.

  • Multipurpose development of the coast and ocean can be considered as multifunction construction combining the functions of coastal protection, waterfront amenity and creation or rehabilitation of habitats. Multfunction development of coastal and ocean spaces can be accomplished by applying the ecosystem control structure of artificial habitats which will cultivate fishing ground with ecological harmony to the coastal protection system. To evaluate the applicability of ecosystem control structures as as fundamental coastal protection structure, wave control function of the structure is studied by numerical and physical analyses. Dimensional analysis and hydraulic experiment point out the importance of width and crest depth of ecosystem control structure, construction water depth and wave steepness. Wave control efficiency is estimated by the attenuation coefficient $(K_H)$ according to wave steepness $(H_0/L_0)$, relative constructed water depth $(h_i/H_0)$, relative berm width $(B/L_0)$ and relative crest depth $(h_B/H_0)$ of eosystem control structure. Empirical fomulas are suggested based on the results of model test by applying the multiple model based on this experimental results and numerical wave shoaling-dissipation-breaking model appears to be valid for the analysis of wave transformation around ecosystem control structure in the coastal waters.

  • The relationships among long-term variation in catches of Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius) and main food organism such as common mackerel (Scomber japonicus), anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), and oceanic condition in Korean waters were analyzed using 40 years of time-series data from 1971-2010. In the 1990s, oceanic conditions around the Korean peninsula shifted to a warmer regime with higher SST (sea surface temperature). The total catch of Spanish mackerel in Korean waters increased dramatically since the early 2000s, and main fishing ground form into South Sea in winter season from December to January. From the results of correlation analysis, we found a significant relationship between the Spanish mackerel catch and environmental factor such as SST, common mackerel and anchovy catch in Korean waters.
