This study analyzed annual catch trend during 45 years and monthly catch of the least 10 years (2005~2014) for chub mackerel caught in the Korean coastal waters. To determine fishing status of chub mackerel, fork length measurements were conducted at least twice every week for 100 individuals randomly selected at the Busan Cooperative Fish Market from January of 2012 to December of 2014; and biological characteristics and proximate composition (moisture, protein, fat, ash) were analyzed by length class (I~IV) on a monthly basis from January to December of 2014. Monthly catch trend showed low level below 5,000 mt from February to July, whereas high level above 15,000 mt from October to December. For the period between 2012 and 2014, annual average catch proportion of juvenile were relatively high at 68.1%, 53.1% and 53.2% from January to April, before spawning season, while those were low at 21.5%, 20.7% and 29.12% from June to November. As for the change in the proximate composition per 100 g of muscle, protein and ash did not change much by seasons and length class, whereas fat and moisture contents showed large fluctuations and complementary relationship between the two factors. Regardless of length class, monthly average fat content, containing Omega-3, showed the lowest at 7.18 g in April and highest at 19.27 g in December, which exhibited 2.6 times difference from one another. Regardless of fishing seasons, fat content by length class were 19.06 g for the class I and 6.43 g for the class IV, which showed three times difference. Fat contents of the class I were high at 26.97 g and 27.19 g in November and December, while low at 8.37 g and 9.99 g in April and May. Especially, fat contents from January to May were 5.0 g, which was the lowest. Therefore, it is expected that consumer could indirectly contribute fisheries management through their understanding and wise consumption based on fishing status and fluctuation of proximate composition.
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the cooperative squid fisheries problems surrounding the $E128^{\circ}$, established by the 1965 Korea - Japan Fisheries Agreement which banned Korean large trawlers' fishing east to the $E128^{\circ}$ In fact, the moratorium was put on by Japans request. However, such issue did not occur until the filefish stock in the southern Korean sea, which was a major target fish species of the large trawl fisheries, The filefish stock collapsed completely around 1991 and at the same time most of bottom fish stocks in the East China Sea began to show a symptom of over - exploitation. Thus, the off - shore large trawlers learned to have a little opportunity of finding out alternative fish stocks as well as fishing grounds. Fortunately, at that time squid resource stock and consumption were on the increasing trend. The large trawl fisheries were able to economically exploit squid stock east to the $E128^{\circ}$ through cooperative fishing with squid angling light boats in the East and East - South Sea, even though such cooperative fishing activities violate the existing fishery laws apparently. Some important reasons that the large trawlers have continued the cooperative fishing seem to be because (ⅰ) squid resource stock has been on the increasing state over time, (ⅱ) the trawl fisheries have made a significant contribution to meeting domestic and export demands and stabilizing squid prices, and (ⅲ) they have kept domestic squid market from foreign competition. However, the new Korea - Japan fisheries agreement in 1998 provided a momentum of questioning the effectiveness of the $E128^{\circ}$ by the squid - related fisheries other than the squid angling. Serious conflicts between squid - related fisheries began to emerge and to be much intensified. Squid angling industries in the East opposed to large trawlers's efforts to formalize such illegal cooperative squid fishing activities. Their main argument was that such formalizing would definitely make the East coast squid prices lower and in turn their business performance would be worse off. The results of quantitative analysis suggest that the trawlers' massive landing may have a significant influence on lowering the east coast squid prices. Now, an important issue that the squid - related fisheries and the government are facing is to solve such complex squid fishing problems through a multi - participatory negotiation process, including price stabilization, total allowable catch level and its operation schemes, $E128^{\circ}$ rearrangement, and so on.
It has been recognized, virtually from the time of its inception, that fisheries economics, like other aspects of resource economics, should ideally be cast in capital-theoretic terms. The fish population or biomass can be viewed as a capital stock in that, like conventional or man-made capital, it is capable of yielding a sustainable consumption flow through time. This study is to introduce the optimal control theory which was extended from the theory of calculus of variations into the study of former static theory of fisheries economics started by Gordon (1954). The optimal control theory eliminated the inadequacies of the classical techniques to a large extent. From this point of view, this study, on the base of Schaefer model, summerizes most of major results achieved so far, but does so in a manner such that the links with capital theory are made transparent. This study explores two sets of problems. The first concerns the optimal approach to the equilibrium stock, i.e. the optimal investment policy. The second set of problems arises from the relaxation of the highly restrictive assumption of autonomy (i.e. the assumption that the parameters are independent of time), then concludes the relaxation of linearity assumption together with the complexities caused by that.
The main purpose of this research is to analyze economic feasibility of biodegradable sonw crab gill net model project. The results of benefit/cost analysis show that use of the biodegradable gear is economically feasible. Assuming that the rate of gill net lost is 5 percent, net present value was estimated 311,898,282-590,533,375won, benefit-cost ratio 1.816-1.923 and internal rate of return 7.96-10.59%. The development and diffusion of biodegradable fishing gear appear to make a significant contribution to fisheries resource conservation and marine ecosystem protection. In addition, biodegradable gear production firms may have a good opportunity of exporting it to other coastal states, depending on the progress of WTO subsidy negotiation.
Norovirus surrogate (feline calicivirus) was inactivated by treatment at 50,000 psi for 60 sec by 6.8-$log_{10}TCID_{50}mL^{-1}$. Tissue obtained from oyster (digestive gland, gill and mantle) was qualitatively destroyed and distorted by treatment at pressure greater than 5,000 psi for 60 sec. High pressure treatment induced progressive changes in the color of the oyster adductor muscle. High pressure treatment effectively reduced norovirus surrogate but induced conformational changes in the tissue and color of oyster flesh.
Fisheries and shipping industry as national basic industry need continuous growth and basic human resource development for international competition. This study was carried out through investigating of the related literature and reports. The purpose of study for developing direction and subject matter of curriculum in the fisheries marine science high school was as follows. Recently, reforms of vocational high school will expand professionalization and specialization. Therefore systematic curriculum of basic knowledge, basic skill and technical is required more and more in field work of fishery and merchant marine. The other important factors of curriculum improvement were cooperative role between school and local industry, adaptation of basic ability, job analysis, various curriculum opening. Above all, teachers of fisheries and merchant marine high school require advanced consciousness and must participate in revising curriculum. And the textbook of fisheries and merchant marine high school is useful to improve the level of learning ability degree and must be written by the related teacher, and the textbook contents must be studied by the expert group under professors leading to advanced discipline and skill of field work.
The relationships among long-term variation in catches of Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius) and main food organism such as common mackerel (Scomber japonicus), anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), and oceanic condition in Korean waters were analyzed using 40 years of time-series data from 1971-2010. In the 1990s, oceanic conditions around the Korean peninsula shifted to a warmer regime with higher SST (sea surface temperature). The total catch of Spanish mackerel in Korean waters increased dramatically since the early 2000s, and main fishing ground form into South Sea in winter season from December to January. From the results of correlation analysis, we found a significant relationship between the Spanish mackerel catch and environmental factor such as SST, common mackerel and anchovy catch in Korean waters.
Due to a publicly owned resources, the overexploitation of the fisheries resources can result in externalities in the form of reduced future levels of yield. These problems can be theoretically improved through effective management of the fishery. The paper illustrates maximum sustainable yield(MSY), maximum economic yield(MEY) and F0.1 level of fishing mortality as the concept of optimal yield, and it theoretically shows that MSY is more appropriate for the optimal yield than MEY where prices increase even though MEY achieves the maximization of economic rent in a fishery assuming constant prices. And the paper presents several fisheries management tools and policies such as input controls, output controls and taxes. As the traditional approach to fishery management, input controls involve restrictions on the physical inputs into the production process(e.g. capital, time or technology) and output controls involve limits on the quantity of fish that can be landed. To introduce user cost into the harvest decisions of rent-seeking fishers, taxation, as a bioeconomic management policy of the fisheries, directly addresses the problems associated with the resource being unpriced. As most fisheries management plans, however, have increasing fisher income as an objective, taxes have not been introduced into any fisheries management policies despite their theoretical attraction.
Fisheries Agreements among Korea, China, and Japan, for the effective management of fisheries resources and protection of fisheries disputes, have been processed in a manner to conclude interim arrangements those are effective prior to the final demarcation of the maritime delimitation which often requires much time to settle among the relevant states, Based on this understanding, Korea, China, and Japan, had proceeded their mutual fisheries agreement ; and, two fisheries agreements, between Korea-Japan and China-Japan, have already entered into force on 22 January 1999 and on 1 June 2000, respectively. Lastly fisheries negotiation between Korea and China has been concluded in order to make it effective on 30 June 2001. As Korean fisheries have already experienced the impacts after the entry into force of Korea-Japan Fisheries Agreement, it is inevitable that the likewise will also be true for the Korea-china Fisheries Agreement. The results of fisheries negotiation should minimize the loss by ensuring Korean flagged vessels' fishing rights to the maximum level in the counterpart's waters, and to maximize our counterpart's loss by restricting its vessels' fishing rights to the minimum level in our waters. However, such goals are almost unreachable in an intergovernmental negotiation. On this ground, regardless of the results, the negotiation is highly criticized from all the interested realms of the society. First, this study reviews the negotiation process ana subject matters of the fisheries agreement, and then evaluates the disputed items issued by academic, political, and industry areas in an international law and fisheries perspective. After the entry into farce of fisheries agreement, various activities should be accommodated as future tasks, such as the adjustments of the domestic fisheries structure, the reorganization of the resource management based fisheries structure, the construction of EEz large surveillance system, and the construction of the multilateral fisheries cooperation system Through an earlier implementation of those tasks, the Korean fisheries will be better prepared in minimizing the predicted impacts once the Korea-China Fisheries Agreement becomes effective.
This study is to estimate the factor weights of the reasons for decreases in marine fishery resources using the Analytical Hierarchy Process. Furthermore, it classifies 20 fishes under a fishery resource recovery plan into various groups of fishes according to these factor weights using the non-hierarchial cluster analysis. The factors of decreases in marine fishery resources are identified as bio-ecological, technology-system, economic-business, and fishing village-society factors. Two of the most important factors of decreases in resource are turned out to be the economic-business and bio-ecological factors, estimated as 31% and 30% respectively. The technology-system and fishing village-society factors are estimated as 21% and 18% respectively. The study utilizes non-hierarchical cluster analysis in order to classify 20 fishes into 2, 3, and 4 groups. K-means cluster analysis is applied for grouping in conjunction with ANOVA to identify statistical differences in factors. Once again, the economic-business and bio-economic factors play main role in grouping 2-groups of fishes case. The third group of fishes in addition to the previous 2 groups of fishes appears as those 4 factors of decrease evenly play about the same role at a 3-groups of fishes case. Finally, the economic-business and bio-economic factors are turned out to be evenly important in the 4th group once there are 4-groups of fishes.
