This study was conducted at 25 sites of 6 mainstreams and 19 tributaries sites within Heuck Stream watershed during May~October 2003 for the survey of fish distributions, compositions, and community characteristics. The survey showed that total fish was identified as 9 family and 26 species in all sites, and Cyprinidae dominated the community as 15 species. The dominant species of >20% of the total were Zacco temminckii (29%), Zacco platypus (22%), and Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (21%) in the watershed. Community analysis, based on the stream spatial gradients, indicated composition differences along the main axis of the stream from the headwater to the downstream; R. oxycephalus predominated in the most headwater zone and Z. temminckii dominated in the lower headwater zone, whereas Z. temminckii -Z. platypus dominated in the mid-to-downstream, and Z. platypus dominated the community in the most downstream zone. Total endemic species was 7 family and 15 species, which is made of 50% in the fish community, so that the high proportion of endemic species indicated a healthy region in terms of fish community, compared to average 23% in Korean peninsula in general. The total number and species of fish increased as the stream order (stream size) increased, indicating that impacts on chemical pollution or habitat disturbance were not so large to the fish community in this watershed. Trophic and tolerance guilds analysis showed that relative proportions of sensitive and insectivore species were >50% in the watershed and decreased as the stream order increased, whereas relative proportions of tolerant and omnivore species showed an opposite results. These outcomes suggest that the natural condition of watershed is preserved relatively and the region should be protected from the chemical and habitat disturbace by agricultural activity and urban developments.
Fish fauna of 13 sites in a main channel and its tributaries of the Taehwa River and 9 Sites of other headwater streams in the Ulsan area (Mt. Gaji) were investigated from February 1999 to October 2000. All sites were the 1st to 5th order streams in the Ulsan area, and 10 sites (45.5%) were intermittent streams. A total of 2,695 flsh specimens were collected and classified into 14 families and 44 species. Cyprinidae accounted for 40.9% (18 species) of the total fish species collected and 68.4% (1,845 ind.) of the total abundance. Subdominant families were Cobitidae (6 species; 78 ind.), Gobiidae (5 species; 240 ind.), and Gasterosteidae (2 species: 128 ind.). Zacco temmincki (RA 23.0%, 14 sites) was the dominant species; subdominant species were Moroco oxycephalus (20.2%, 11 sites), Zacco platypus (8.0%, 10 sites), Mugil cephalus (5.2%, 3 sites). Among the total species, 8 species were endemic species to Korea. The dominant Korean endemic species was Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae (53.6% of Korean endemic species) and subdominant species were Iksookimia longicorpa (20.5%), and S. japonicus coreanus (6.6%) . Due to the intermittent nature of streams in the Ulsan area, a conservation program of nsh fauna is strongly needed.
Field monitoring was conducted for fish fauna and community assessment at 7 sites from April 2008 to October 2009 in the Chogang Stream. The number of fish samples in this period were 4,669 in 36 species of 9 families. Family Cyprinidae take 66.7 (24 species), Cobitidae, Bagridae, Centropomidae and Odontobutidae occupied 5.6%(each 2 species), respectively. Twenty species (55.6%) including Acheilognathus koreensis and A. yamatsutae were found endemic out of the 36 species. The species of Pseudopungtungia nigra, Gobiobotia macrocephala and Gobiobotia brevibarba were endangered species. The most frequently found one was Zacco koreanus (34.0%, n=1,588) followed by Z. platypus (22.6%, n=1,053) and Coreoleuciscus splendidus (13.3%, n=623). The lower reach of Chogang Stream was more abundance of species, high diversity, evenness and richness, and lower dominance index than those of the upper reach. According to the dendrogram established at 0.5 level of similarity rate, sampling stations were divided into 3 groups. They were divided into upper most stream (St. 1~St. 2), upper stream (St. 3), middle and lower stream (St. 4~St. 7). Overall, it was concluded that the Chogang Stream has been relatively well protected from the anthropogenic disturbance for the legally protected species including the endemic species studied in this study.

This study was conducted to investigate the fish fauna and characteristics of the Carassius auratus population in the Boryeong Reservoir in Chungcheongnam-do from October 2017 to June 2018. The collected fish were identified as 3,506 individuals of 15 species from a total of nine families. The dominant and subdominant species were H. nipponensis with 1,706 (48.6%) individuals and C. auratus with 1,021 (29.1%) individuals, respectively. The biomass of C. auratus (246,130g), P. fulvidraco(50,610g), C. cuvieri (14,730 g), S. asotus (11,560 g), and C. carpio (10,930 g) was analyzed. The results of the community analysis showed a dominant index value of 0.87 (±0.2), a diversity index value of 0.78 (±0.5), an evenness index value of 0.47 (±0.2), and a richness index value of 0.99 (±0.5). The length-weight analysis of C. auratus showed a regression coefficient b of 3.06, and a condition factor (K) of 0.0004 with a positive slope. The frequency distribution of the total length analysis of the C. auratus population inhabiting the Boryeong Reservoir showed a high distribution of lengths between 140-160 mm and a low distribution between 230-280 mm. The normalized difference water index (NDWI) was analyzed over the Boryeong Reservoir water surface from 2013 to 2014 using Landsat 8 channel data. The areas where the NDWI was decreased were located at the inflow site of Ungcheon Stream.
Imha Reservoir is connected to Andong Reservoir via a diversion tunnel allowing water to pass between. The diversion tunnel is equipped with screens to exclude exotic largemouth bass due to their predatory impacts on prey assemblages resulting in a degradation of species richness of local fish fauna and extinction of local fish populations in Korea. Flow pattern changes resulting from the fish screens and trash racks were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Numerical simulations showed that the decrease in the discharge capacity of the tunnel is approximately 8.6% and the headloss coefficient for fish screen at Andong intake tower was determined to be 1.5. In order not to allow the small fishes enough to pass through the wire openings enter into Imha Reservoir through tunnel, the velocity in the tunnel should be greater than 1.48 m/s which is a critical ascending velocity of the bass. This study suggests that it can keep the velocity higher enough to exclude largemouth bass when a gate opens with the condition of 1.0m difference in water stage between two reservoirs.

One specimen of the percophid fish, Pteropsaron evolans Jordan and Snyder and two specimens of the labrid fish, Xyrichtys verrens (Jordan and Evermann) were newly collected from Jeju Island of Korea. P. evolans is characterized by having one pair of spines at snout, cheek without scales, and elongated first dorsal fin in male. X. verrens is easily distinguished by having tip of pectoral fin black, many rows of scales on cheek, and an elongated pelvic fin. We describe as new to Korean fish fauna and propose new Korean names, "Sil-nun-tung-i" for the former and "Jang-mi-ok-du-nol-rae-gi" for the latter.

Preliminary investigation and analysis of the effectiveness of controlling the number of ecosystem disturbance fishes residing in Togyo reservoir using the native carnivorous fish species were performed. The data were collected from August 2011 to November 2016. The release of native carnivorous fish species was carried out from the end of May, 2012 to the end of July, 2016, considering fishing ban period of Siniperca scherzeri. The comparative abundance of Lepomis macrochirus was found to be 12.8% in the first year and increased a little bit after releasing the native carnivorous fish. However, it decreased to 3.9% in the last year showing a value of less than 5%. On the other hand, the Micropterus salmoides populations tended to increase after the release of native carnivorous fish species. This seems to be the result of the segregation of habitat by interspecific competition with S. scherzeri. The M. salmoides moved from inside of the lake to edges, and to influent tributaries. Stable isotope analysis showed that Channa argus had the highest levels of nutrition, S. scherzeri and M. salmoides were in competition, and L. macrochirus was used as a feed source for released species. Changes of the fish community in the Togyo reservoir was represented by the rank abundance curves based on the results of the fish fauna. As a result, the fish group in incoming tributaries are somewhat disturbed after the release of the native carnivorous species. Similarly, the fish group in the reservoir were disturbed as well but it's gradually stabilizing afterwards. Therefore, the control of the ecosystem disturbance species using the native carnivorous fish of Korea is effective and helps to stabilize the fish community in the lake.

2004
Fish fauna and community structure were surveyed in the Nakdong River, Gumi City, Kyeongpook province from April 2001 to July 2002. During the surveyed Period, 39 species, 32 genera belonging to 10 families were collected. Cyprinid fish occupied 64.1% (25 species) and cobitid fish had 7.7% (3 species). Fourteen species(35.9%) of observed species were known as endemic species. The exotic fish was Micropterus salmoides (2.5%) . The dominant species were Zacco platypus (relative abundance: 36.7%) and Opsariichthys uncirorstris amurensis (22.7%). Carassius aurafus and Microphysogobio rapidus were numerous (4.0${\sim}$4.3%). The rare species comprising less than 0.15% were Acheilognathus koreensis, Aphyocypris chinensis, Iksookimia longicorpus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Rhinogobius giurinus, Sarcocheilichthys variagatus wakiyae, Silurus asotus astus, and Channa argus. It was found that the population density of carnivorous Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis increased drastically in the mid-reach of the Nakdong river since it had been introduced from the other native rivers in the middle 1990s. Gobiobotia nakdongensis inhabit riffle (water velocity : 0.43${\sim}$0.67 m $s^{-1}$) of which the river bed is mainly sand. This species is considered to be in need of conservation. As the result of analyzing fish community in the surveyed area, the species diversity, evenness and dominant indices were 1.008, 0.663 and 0.196 respectively. The findings showed that the tributary, which the waterside plants were abundant and had various habitats, had a higher species diversity (1.112) than the main river (0.787). Sand mining had been disturbing the river ecosystem of the study stations 3, 11, 13 & 14, and these stations showed a quite low species diversity (0.421 ${\sim}$0.574).
During studies of the fish fauna and communities of Mankyeong River, which flows to the Yellow Sea, 14 families in 44 genera and 63 species of freshwater fishes were caught. Zacco platypus (27.7%) was the dominant species and Z. koreanus (11.3%) the subdominant species in this river. Twenty-three species of Korean endemic fishes appeared, and two of these, Pseudopungtungia nigra and Liobagrus obesus, represented endangered Korea species. Community structure of each branch stream was stable, showing appropriate dominant species: Z. koreanus in Jeonju Stream, Z. platypus in Kosan and Soyang Streams, and Carassius auratus in Mankyeong main stream. Three introduced species appeared: C. cuvieri, Micropterus salmoides, and Lepomis macrochirus. Among these introduced species, M. salmoides expanded its territory from midstream to downstream because of its strong carnivorous tendency and it favoring of lentic waters. This distribution of M. salmoides affected the number and distribution of small native freshwater fishes, especially those in the subfamily Acheilognathinae.
The purpose of the study was to introduce the fish fauna and distribution in the Shinpo district, North Korea. Sampling was carried out in October 1997, July 1998, May and October 2002, in sites located in the upstream, middle and down of the southern river of Bukcheong and three brackish lakes of Hommanpo, Daein and Hyunkum, respectively. A total of 29 species belonging to 11 families were found. Family Cyprinidae showed the prosperity in species number, comprising 28% among total species found. No natural monument fishes or rare fishes were captured. Ten commercial species, five anadromous ones and five brackish ones were identified. Feeding guilds was identified as 11 carnivores, 2 herbivores and 7 omnivores. Twenty species belonging to 7 families inhabited in the river, 18 species of 6 families in Lake Homanpo, 21 of 7 in Lake Hyunkum and 23 of 8 in Lake Daein, respectively. Ecological indices of richness, diversity and evenness were highest in Lake Daein and the dominace index was highest in Lake Hyunkum.
