Characteristics and distribution of the natural commensal flora in the surrounding environment and tissues of clam in Hadong area were studied under varying conditions of growth media and incubation temperatures. Total numbers of bacteria present in intestinal tract, gill, body fluid and surrounding mud were found to be not influenced by the used BHIA, STA and SNA media. Although the growth rate of bacteria at the condition of $15^{\circ}C$ incubation temperature was slower than that of $25^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$, it showed the highest number of total bacteria compared with other two different conditions of incubation temperature. Interestingly, the proportion of bacteria able to form colony on several selective media was higher in replica analysis from nutrient media to selective media than that in direct smearing from samples. The generic diversity of bacteria isolated from the tissues and analyzed by API 20E and API 20NE kit showed similar pattern with each other and distinct from that of environment. The distribution of bacteria in the surrounding mud or mantle fluid of clam indicated a high diversity comparable to that found for the gill or intestinal tract microflora, with Pseudomonas being the prevalent group. It implies that the tissues of clam may probide a selective habitat for a commensal microflora.

Genetic diversity and genetic structure within the Geum River and Mankyung River populations of the Korean endangered Black shinner (Pseudopungtungia nigra) were assessed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). AFLP analysis using five primer combinations generated 447 AFLP bands with 64.1% polymorphism (Geum River 74.6% and Mankyung River 53.6%). The heterozygosities within the two populations were calculated to be 0.170 and 0.104, respectively. Their average genetic diversities are 0.240 and 0.147, respectively. The pairwise Fst value (0.150) indicated distinct genetic differentiation between the two populations. A UPGMA dendrogram based on genetic distance among the individuals revealed a division corresponding to geographical regions, with low genetic variation within the Mankyung River population, and low genetic distance (0.026) between the two populations. Consequently, the two populations may have the same genetic origin The Geum River population will be more suitable than the Mankyung River population for conservation plans to increase the population sizes. Genetic and habitat management will be necessary for the Mankyung River population.

Two crucian carp species (Carassius auratus and C. cuvieri) inhabit Lake Yedang in South Korea, and C. auratus is known to be native to Korea. Classification of these two freshwater fish species is often confused because of their morphological similarity. To distinguish the two species, we conducted phylogenetic and population genetic analyses of C. auratus and C. cuvieri based on their mitochondrial DNA sequences of the cytochrome b gene (CYTB). We also compared our partial CYTB sequence (<1,056 bp) with 10 Chinese, nine Japanese, and two Russian crucian carp fishes. The results of our phylogenetic analysis showed that C. auratus and C. cuvieri were clearly divided into two phylogroups. The nucleotide diversity (π) of C. auratus from Korea, China, and Japan showed a range of 0.146%~0.421%, while the range of π of C. cuvieri from Korea and Japan was lower than those of C. auratus (0.0%~0.054%). Moreover, the comparison of CYTB divergence among crucian carp fishes in China, Japan, and Korea indicated that Korean Carassius fishes were distantly related to those from China and Japan, with two exceptions: the pairwise Fst value between Korean C. auratus and northern Chinese C. auratus was not significantly different. In addition, no significant genetic divergence between Korean and Japanese C. cuvieri was detected. We conclude that, despite the morphological similarities, C. auratus and C. cuvieri should be considered as separate freshwater fish resources in conservation efforts for genetic diversity.
The purpose of this study was to analyze chemical water quality, fish trophic guilds, tolerance indicators, and fish community conditions in the Gap Stream and to compare the stream conditions between the unimpacted site and impacted site. This study was conducted in the physically stable season (May 2008) to minimize physical impacts such as flow and hydrological disturbance, and applied the study in the Gap Stream with two sites of unimpacted upstream site (Unim-S), mainly surrounded by forested area and impacted site (Im-S), influenced by the wastewater disposal plants and industrial complex in the urban region. Chemical data analysis showed that the degree of organic matter pollution, based on BOD, and COD, was $2{\sim}3$ fold greater in the Im-S than the Unim-S, and that TP, as eutrophication indicators, was 4.7 fold greater in the Im-S. Also, $NH_3-N$ was in 8.2 fold greater in the Im-S ($6.25\;mg\;L^{-1}$) than the Unim-S ($0.76\;mg\;L^{-1}$), indicating a massive influence of wastewater from the disposal plant. Similar results were found in other chemical parameters. Thus, chemical impacts in the Im-S were evident, compared to the unimpacted site. Evaluations of tolerant indicator species indicated that sensitive species were dominant in the Unim-S (23.9%) and tolerant species were dominant (97.8%) in the Im-S. Condition factor (CF) was averaged 0.95 ($0.68{\sim}1.18$) in the Unim-S and 1.08 ($0.93{\sim}1.22$) in the Im-S. Fish community in the Unim-S and Im-S was categorized as Zacco-community and Hemibarbus-community, respectively, and the community diversity index (H') was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the Unim-S (0.810) than the Im-S (0.466). Overall, our results suggest that the comparison approach of various chemical and ecological indicators provide important information in identifying multiple stressors in the stream ecosystems.
Seasonal fluctuation in abundance and species composition of fish in coastal waters off Nang island were investigated using seasonal samples collected by long-bag stow net in 2017. A total 10,208 fish were sampled and classified into 37 species, 26 families, and 9 orders. The dominant species were Engraulis japonicus (4,886 individuals, 47.9%), Pennahia argentata (842 individuals, 8.2%), and Ilisha elongata (369 individuals, 3.6%). The diversity index was the highest in May (H'=3.23) and the lowest in November (H'=1.24). The dominance index was the highest in November (D=78.7%) and the lowest in May (D=22.4%).
The ichthyofauna and fish community were studied in Miho Stream from May 2004 to August 2005. During the surveyed period 41 species belonging to 10 families were collected. Twelve of the species (29.3%) are endemic to Korea. Exotic fishes were Carassius cuvieri, Lepomis macrochirus, and Micropterus salmoides. Dominant species was Zacco platypus (54.7%). Comparing the present result with that of Son (1982), the indices of diversity, evenness and richness were lower and the dominance index was higher; Lampetra reissneri, Anguilla japonica, Acheilognathus macropterus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Pseudopungtungia nigra, Gobiobotia naktongensis, Lefua costata, Pseudobagrus koreanus, Monopterus albus and Iksookimia choii did not appear; Carassius auratus, Rhodeus uyekii, Rhodeus notatus, Acheilognathus lanceolatus, Pseudogobio esocinus, Hemibarbus longirostris, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Cobitis lutheri, Iksookimia koreensis, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco, and Rhinogobius brunneus, remarkably decreased, and Z. platypus, Pseudorasbora parva, and Squalidus gracilis majimae increased.

The ichthyofauna and fish community structure were investigated at three areas in Lake Chungju from April to October 2004. During the surveyed period,32 two species belonging to 12 families were collected. Dominant species in number was hemibarbus labeo (relative abundance : 23.2%) and subdominant was Erythroculter erythropterus (12.1%). Siniperca scherzeri (9.2%), and Pseudogobio esocinus (8.6%) were also numerous. There were nine Korean endemic species belonging to six families including Acheilognathus yamatsutae. The number of fish species collected was 28 in Danyang, 17 in Jecheon, and 15 in Chungju. Highest dominant index calculated was 0.670 in Chungju, and highest diversity index calculated was 2.442 in the Danyang area. We need closer observation of population fluctuation of some species, including H. labeo, the dominant species by biomass in Lake Chungju.

Background: Large rivers are ecological treasures with high human value, but most have experienced decades of degradation from industrial and municipal sewage, row-crop agricultural practices, and hydrologic alteration. We reviewed published analyses of long-term fish diversity publications from three intensively managed large river ecosystems to demonstrate the conservation potential of large river ecosystems. Results: We show how the incorporation of recent advances in river concepts will allow a better understanding of river ecosystem functioning and conservation. Lastly, we focus on the Wabash River ecosystem based on high conservation value and provide a list of actions to maintain and support the ecosystem. In the Wabash River, there were originally 66 species of freshwater mussels, but now only 30 species with reproducing populations remain. Although there were multiple stressors over the last century, the largest change in Wabash River fish biodiversity was associated with rapid increases in municipal nutrient loading and invasive bigheaded carps. Conclusions: Like similarly neglected large river systems worldwide, the Wabash River has a surprising amount of ecological resilience and recovery. For instance, of the 151 native fish species found in the 1800s, only three species have experienced local extinctions, making the modern assemblage more intact than many comparable rivers in the Mississippi River basin. However, not all the changes are positive or support the idea of recovery. Primary production underpins the productivity of these ecosystems, and the Wabash River phytoplankton assemblages shifted from high-quality green algae in the 1970s to lower less nutritional blue-green algae as nutrient and invasive species have recently increased. Our recommendations for the Wabash River and other altered rivers include the restoration of natural hydrology for the mainstem and tributaries, nutrient reductions, mechanisms to restore historical hydrologic patterns, additional sediment controls, and improved local hydraulics.
Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fish larvae assemblages in the south-western Jinhae Bay were investigated monthly in 2009. During the study period, 49 larvae species belonging to 24 families were collected. The dominant species were Clupea pallasii, Hexagrammos otakii, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonicus, Parablennius yatabei, and Omobranchus elegansei. These six species accounted for 92.7% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in July and January, respectively. Principal component analysis(PCA) and correlation analysis showed that variation in monthly water temperature could act as an indicator of seasonal variation in community structure and abundance of the dominant species; in particular, those of C. pallasii, H. otakii, E. japonicus and P. yatabei corresponded with the water temperature.
To study the fish larval community in the coastal waters off Shinsudo, Samchonpo, samples were collected with long bag net at 2 stations from October 1986 to September 1987. Forty-four species in 29 families were collected during the period of investigation. Engraulis japonicus, Enedrias nebulosus, Ammodytes personatus and Astriconger myriaster predominated in fish assemblage. These four fish species accounted for approximately 96.79% in number and 73.94% in biomass. Number of species, number of individuals and biomass were high during the spring, but low in summer. A peak of diversity(H') for number was found in April 1987, and that for biomass was in October 1986. Four showing dominant species had their own seasonal abundance patterns, a peak of abundance between the species at 2 months intervals.
