Pipe wall thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion and various types of erosion is a significant and costly damage phenomenon in secondary piping systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Most NPPs have management programs to ensure pipe integrity due to wall thinning that includes periodic measurements for pipe wall thicknesses using nondestructive evaluation techniques. Numerous measurements using ultrasonic tests (UTs; one of the nondestructive evaluation technologies) have been performed during scheduled outages in NPPs. Using the thickness measurement data, wall thinning rates of each component are determined conservatively according to several evaluation methods developed by the United States Electric Power Research Institute. However, little is known about the conservativeness or reliability of the evaluation methods because of a lack of understanding of the measurement error. In this study, quantitative models for UT thickness measurement deviations of nuclear pipes and fittings were developed as the first step for establishing an optimized thinning evaluation procedure considering measurement error. In order to understand the characteristics of UT thickness measurement errors of nuclear pipes and fittings, round robin test results, which were obtained by previous researchers under laboratory conditions, were analyzed. Then, based on a large dataset of actual plant data from four NPPs, a quantitative model for UT thickness measurement deviation is proposed for plant conditions.

The effect of address discharge characteristics by selective reset method is investigated to prevent the weakness of address discharge in the middle of a TV-field without increase of the black luminance. To reduce black luminance in AC PDP usually, the first subfield during one TV frame adopted the conventional rising ramp-reset waveform, whereas the other subfields adopted the subsidiary reset waveform without rising ramp type. As the wall charge for the address discharge was accumulated by only the rising ramp waveform during the first reset period, the wall charge on three electrodes was disappeared as time passed and the address discharge would be weakened in the rear subfields. To prevent a reduction of the address discharge characteristics without decrease the black luminance, the modified rising ramp reset waveform was adopted only in the sixth subfield. As a result, a modified driving method could improve the address discharge characteristics compared with selective reset driving scheme with almost the same black luminance.
Generally the dynamic characteristics of stone wall structures depend on several factors such as contact, the type of interlocking bonding stones, and the filling materials. This paper describes a non-destructive technique for diagnosis of historic masonry stone structures using the measurement of natural frequency technique. For this purpose, the castle wall of Nag-An Folk Town located in Sunchon, Korea was selected as a model. The Nag-An Town Castle is one of the well maintained historical remains constructed in the Chosun Kingdom of Korea. The construction started in 1397 A.D and was finished in 1626 A.D.
The non-mortar castle wall is 1470m long and the average height is 4m with a width of 3 4m. The exterior of the wall is bonded with 1 2 m rectangular rough-faced stone and the inside of the wall is filled with gravel. The traditional village still remains inside the Nag-An Town Castle, and they have a regional food festival every October. Transverse vibrations were measured at 8 points around the castle. The measured natural frequency of the first mode was 26Hz 41Hz, and the shear modulus of filling material was 2.142 x $10^3$ ~ 8.915 x $10^3$kgf/$cm^2$ . With these results, it may be assumed that the filling material is gravel or a sand-gravel mixture. It is expected that the information provided by this paper will be useful for addressing the maintenance problems of the old castle walls.
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have emerged as a novel functional material that is being increasingly applied in diverse fields including medical, aeronautical and structural engineering to be used in the active, passive and semi-active structural control devices. This paper is mainly aimed at evaluating the ductility and response modification factor of the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) frames with and without the Ni-Ti shape memory alloys. To this end, different configurations were utilized, in which the walls were used in the first, third, middle, and all stories. The models were numerically analyzed using OpenSees Software. The obtained results indicate that improving the shape memory properties of alloys can greatly enhance the ductility and response modification factor. Furthermore, the model whose first and third stories are equipped with the SMA shear wall was found to be 290% more ductile, with a greater response modification factor compared to the unequipped frame.

An acoustic field in a 3 dimensional enclosure is caused from interference between sound sources and the complex reflections from wall. Therefore, changing an acoustic property of wall such as admittance means generating another acoustic field. The purpose of this paper is utilizing the characteristic to make a quiet zone. First, this paper shows that the control material is essentially on the same road as active noise control(ANC). That is, we can consider the control material as the control source of ANC. However we cannot control the reflection strength of it. Second, through a numerical simulation, this paper shows that the position of the control material is an important variable of the control.
In this paper, a numerical study using finite element method with considering soil-structure interaction was conducted to investigate the stress and deformation behavior of a sheet pile wall structure. In numerical model, one of the nonlinear elastic material constitutive models, Duncan-Chang E-v model, is used for describing soil behavior. The hard contact constitutive model is used for simulating the behavior of interface between the sheet pile wall and soil. The construction process of excavation and backfill is simulated by the way of step loading. We also compare the present numerical method with the in-situ test results for verifying the numerical methods. The numerical analysis showed that the soil excavation in the lock chamber has a huge effect on the wall deflection and stress, pile deflection, and anchor force. With the increase of distance between anchored bars, the maximum wall deflection and anchor force increase, while the maximum wall stress decreases. At a low elevation of anchored bar, the maximum wall bending moment decreases, but the maximum wall deflection, pile deflection, and anchor force both increase. The construction procedure with first excavation and then backfill is quite favorable for decreasing pile deflection, wall deflection and stress, and anchor forces.
The damage of first wall material in fusion reactor due to the bubbles caused by plasma has been studied by introducing a relation between the von Mises equivalent stress and the temperature field. The locations and shapes of the bubbles and the synergetic effect between the different bubbles under steady operational conditions have been studied using the finite elements method. Under transient heat loads, plastic deformations have been found to occur, and are significantly enhanced by the presence of the bubbles. The calculated concentration locations of von Mises equivalent stress are well consistent with the observed crack positions of the tungsten surface in many test experiments. Our simulations show that the damage of the bubbles is not severe enough to lead to catastrophic failure of the tungsten armor; however, it can cause local and gradual detachment of tungsten surface, which provides a reasonable explanation for the observed pits and rough or hairy surface morphology etc. Considering the transient heat loads, the lower bound of the security thickness of the tungsten tile is estimated to be greater than 2 mm.
The purpose of this study is to examine historical wall repair details through analysis of repair data and administrative documents of the Paradise Conservation of Gangjin Muwisa Temple. In addition, the purpose of the project is to examine the differences and commonalities between the materials and construction technology used in the building's walls. The data for repair work conducted in 1935, 1956, and 1982~3 was analyzed and the results of the research were as follows. First, data for the wall construction conducted in 1935 during the dismantling repair showed that the interior structure of the wall was found to follow that of the original, but the first, second, and final layers used different materials. The composition material of the wall consisted of clay, lime and sand, the second layer used sand and plaster, and the last layer used plaster and seaweed paste. Second, the structure of the wall interior, which was found during the 1956 repairs, consisted of wood woven horizontally and vertically. It was confirmed that this had been installed diagonally using a rope. Third, the 1982~3 repair work confirmed that the wall's interior construction conformed to the original method. The lime-sand wall was formed by mixing slacked lime, sand, soil, fodder, and seaweed grass. Fourth, when the various repairs are considered as a whole, it is clear that the interior structure of the wall was made more than 1900 years ago, and the material used in the wall changed in 1935. Fifth, the materials used for each repair differed, but each project had a common view of cultural heritage repair principles in sections that stated the significance of each project.

This study proposed a simplified finite element analysis procedure for designing the nonstructural masonry wall in the out-of-plane direction. The proposed method is a two-step elastic analysis procedure by bilinearizing the behavior of the masonry wall. The first step analysis was conducted with initial stiffness representing the behavior up to the effective-yield point, and the second step analysis was conducted with post-yield stiffness. In addition, the orthotropic material property of the masonry was considered in the FE analysis. The maximum load was estimated as the sum of the maximum loads in the first and second step analyses. The maximum load was converted into the moment coefficients and compared with those from the yield line method applied in Eurocode 6. The moment coefficients calculated through the proposed procedure showed a good match with those from the yield line method with less than 6% differences.

The objective of this paper is to find the density, stiffness, and strength of truss-wall diamond corrugation model combined with pinwheel truss inside space. The truss-wall diamond corrugation (TDC) model is defined as a unit cell coming from solid-wall diamond corrugation (SDC) model. Pinwheel truss-wall diamond corrugation (P-TDC) model is made by TDC connected with pinwheel structure inside of the space. Derived ideal solutions of P-TDC is based on truss-wall and pinwheel truss model at first. And then it is compared with Gibson-Ashby's ideal solution. To validate the ideal solutions of the P-TDC, ABAQUS software is used to predict the density, strength, and stiffness, and then each of them are compared to the ideal solution of Gibson-Ashby with a log-log scale. Applied material property is stainless steel 304 because of having cost effectiveness. Applied parameters for P-TDC are 1 thru 5 mm diameter within fixed opening width as 4mm. In conclusion, the relative Young's modulus and relative yield strength of the P-TDC unit model is reasonable matched to the ideal expectations of the Gibson-Ashby's theory. In nearby future, P-TDC model is hoped to be applied to make sandwich core structure by advanced technologies such as 3D printing skills.
