The purpose of this study was to compare the distributing pattern of stress on the finite element models of two units implant prosthesis with one angulated placement of two implant fixtures. The two unit implant crowns simulated to mandibular first and second molars were made. The two kinds of finite element models were designed according to angulation of fixture ($4.0mm{\times}11.5mm$) : Model 1($15^{\circ}$ buccally angulated placement of one fixture on second molar area), Model 2($15^{\circ}$ lingually angulated placement of one fixture on second molar area). Axial loads of 200N were applied to the center of central fossa and to distance of 2mm and 4mm apart from the center of central fossa. Von-Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the fixtures, and buccolingual section of implants. The results were as follows: 1. Under axial loading at the central fossa, the stress was distributed along the straight fixture except apical portion, while on buccally or lingually angulated placement, the highest stresses were concentrated in the neck portion on the opposite side of the angulated fixture. 2. With offset distance increasing, the stresses were concentrated greater in buccal neck of lingually angulated fixture than in lingual neck of buccally angulated fixture. From the above results, in designing of the occlusal scheme for implant prosthesis with the angulated fixture, occlusal contacts should be placed to distribute stress axially in maximum intercuspation and to avoid offset force during eccentric movements.
A General survey on the cleft lip and/or palate patients in Pusan National University Hospital was done. The conclusions were as follow. 1. In gender ratio, male was higher than female. 2. In the cleft type, unilateral cleft lip and palate, cleft lip and alveolus, and bilateral cleft lip and palate in higher ratio order. Left unilateral cleft lip and palate was higher than right in ratio. 3. In first hospital visiting age for dental treatment, the group from 6 years old to 12 years old was most and in that the age group for attending elementary school (about 7-8 years old) showed especially higher ratio. The large majority of patient were born in 1980's and lived in Pusan metropolitan city, KyungSangNamDo. Especially, most of them lived in the neighboring Held of Pusan National University Hospital. 4. Class III skeletal pattern and Angle's Class III molar relationship was most prevalent. Angle's Class II molar relationship showed relative higher ratio because tooth loss and malposition. 5. Primary lip closure in 3 months, secondary lip closure in 6-7 years old, palatal closure in 12-16 months and bone graft in 8-10 years old were operated mostly. Rhinoplasty and scar revision were operated in too early age so the need of infantile orthopedics must be considered. 6. Maxillary expansion and protraction were operated mostly in 8-11 years old but operating in primary dentition must be considered. 7. Tooth alignment were started mostly in mixed dentition and consideration about prosthodontic treatment and retention will be need. 8. In tooth anomaly, tooth malformation and missing were most prevalent.

A cyst is a pathologic lesion characterized by a cavity filled with fluid, celluar products, air, or a combination of these. Dentigerous cysts were formed around the crown of unerupted teeth. The reduced enamel epithelium persists around the crown after it has formed. Proliferation of the epithelium in a fluid-filled sac may be induced by osmotic pressure. In the first decade the most frequent location is the premolar site. In each subsequent decade the largest number of cysts are in the mandibular third molar site, with the second most frequent site being the maxillary canine. The treatment of odontogenic cyst can be mostly classified into three types of cyst enucleation, marsupialization and decompression. We should consider age of patient, anatomic structure, location and size for choosing a treatment method. Advantage of cyst enucleation is fast healing, but a injury of a surrounding structure is highly. Marsupialization is conservative treatment that can reduce the damage of a adjacent structure, but it is only limited at superficial lesion. Decompression also is conservative treatment, but it has the difficulty of the oral hygiene and the troublesome of the lavage. We present the possibility that reduces the defect of decompression and cures the lesion efficiently. We report a male patient with the dentigerous cyst developed at left mandibular third molar in this study. We used the decompression for a treatment and created special appliance to treat the lesion efficiently. We report a case of the cyst treatment that is association with efficiency of decompression appliance.
Different from humans, who have a continuous dentition of teeth, mice have only three molars and one incisor separated by a toothless region called the diastema in the hemi mandibular arch. Although tooth buds form in the embryonic diastema, they regress and do not develop into teeth. In this study, we evaluated the proteins that modulate the diastema formation through comparative analysis with molar-forming tissue by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS) proteome analysis. From the comparative and semi-quantitative proteome analysis, we identified 147 up- and 173 down-regulated proteins in the diastema compared to the molar forming proteins. Based on this proteome analysis, we selected and evaluated two candidate proteins, EMERIN and RAB7A, as diastema tissue specific markers. This study provides the first list of proteins that were detected in the mouse embryonic diastema region, which will be useful to understand the mechanisms of tooth development.
Rhizopus chinensis cells immobilized on loofah (Luffa cylindrica) sponges were used to produce biodiesel via the transesterification of soybean oil. In whole-cell immobilization, loofah sponge is considered to be a superior alternative to conventional biomass carriers because of its biodegradable and renewable properties. During cell cultivation, Rhizopus chinensis mycelia can spontaneously and firmly adhere to the surface of loofah sponge particles. The optimal conditions for processing 9.65 g soybean oil at 40℃ and 180 rpm using a 3:1 methanol-to-oil molar ratio were found to be 8% cell addition and 3-10% water content (depending on the oil's weight). Under optimal conditions, an over 90% methyl ester yield was achieved after the first reaction batch. The operational stability of immobilized Rhizopus chinensis cells was assayed utilizing a 1:1 methanol-to-oil molar ratio, thus resulting in a 16.5-fold increase in half-life when compared with immobilized cells of the widely studied Rhizopus oryzae. These results suggest that transesterification of vegetable oil using Rhizopus chinensis whole cells immobilized onto loofah sponge is an effective approach for biodiesel production.
To a first approximation, phase behavior of a system becomes increasingly skew in proportion to the boiling point difference of system-forming constituents. Therefore, phase behavior data of a system of a large boiling point difference are to be experimentally measured for thorough understanding of the thermodynamic characteristics of such system. In this work, isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium of a mixture consisting of toluene and cresol, which shows a large boiling point difference of nearly $100^{\circ}C$ and is consequently expected to be considerably nonideal, was measured by using a recirculating equilibrium cell at various subatmospheric pressures ranging from 10 kPa to 60 kPa. The measured VLE data were correlated with NRTL and UNIQUAC models in a satisfactory manner and the accompanying thermodynamic consistency test represented soundness of the measurements. In addition, the excess molar volume of the mixture was also measured with a vibrating densitometer and correlated with a Redlich-Kister polynomial. A negative excess volume prevailed over the whole concentration range, which indicates a favorable attraction between toluene and cresol isomers and results in an extensive miscibility.
PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the color of a background substructure on the overall color of a zirconia-based all-ceramic crown. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty one posterior zirconia crowns were made for twenty subjects. Seven premolar crowns and six molar crowns were cemented onto abutments with metal post and core in the first and second group. In the third group, eight molar crowns were cemented onto abutments with a prefabricated post and composite core build-up. The color measurements of all-ceramic crowns were made before try-in, before and after cementation. A repeated measure ANOVA was used for a statistical analysis of a color change of all-ceramic crowns at ${\alpha}$=.05. Twenty four zirconia specimens, with different core thicknesses (0.4-1 mm) were also prepared to obtain the contrast ratio of zirconia materials after veneering. RESULTS. $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values of all-ceramic crowns cemented either on a metal cast post and core or on a prefabricated post did not show significant changes (P>.05). However, the slight color changes of zirconia crowns were detected and represented by ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values, ranging from 1.2 to 3.1. The contrast ratios of zirconia specimens were 0.92-0.95 after veneering. CONCLUSION. No significant differences were observed between the $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values of zirconia crowns cemented either on a metal cast post and core or a prefabricated post and composite core. However, the color of a background substructure could affect the overall color of posterior zirconia restorations with clinically recommended core thickness according to ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values.
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is characterized by proliferation of histiocyte-like cells (Langerhans cell histiocytes) with characteristic Birbeck granules, accompanied by other inflammatory cells. Treatments of LCH include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. One of the representative forms of chemotherapy is intralesional injection of steroids. Surgical treatment in the form of simple excision, curettage, or even ostectomy can be performed depending on the extent of involvement. Radiotherapy is suggested in case of local recurrence, or a widespread lesion. This article shows the case of repetitively recurrent LCH of a 56-year-old man who had been through surgical excision and had to have marginal mandibulectomy and radiotherapy when the disease recurred. After the first recurrence occurred, lesions involved the extensive part of the mandible causing pathologic fracture, so partial mandibular bone resection was performed from the right molar area to the left molar area followed by the excision of the surrounding infected soft tissues. The resected mandibular bone was reconstructed with a segment of fibula osteomyocutaneous free flap and overdenture prosthesis supported by osseointegrated implants.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of the type of osteotomy in the inferior aspect of the mandible on the mechanical performance. Materials and Methods: The study was performed on 20 polyurethane hemimandibles. A sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) was designed in 10 hemimandibles (group 1) with a vertical osteotomy in the buccal side (second molar level) and final osteotomy was performed horizontally on the lingual aspect, while the mandible body osteotomy was finalized as a straight osteotomy in the basilar area, perpendicular to the body. For group 2, the same osteotomy technique was used, but an oblique osteotomy was done in the basilar aspect of the mandibular body, forming continuity with the sagittal cut in the basilar area. Using a surgical guide, osteosynthesis was performed with bicortical screws using an inverted L scheme. In both groups vertical compression tests were performed with a linear load of 1 mm/min on the central fossa of the first molar and tests were done with models made from photoelastic resin. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test, establishing a statistical significance when P<0.05. Results: A statistical difference was not observed in the maximum displacements obtained in the two osteotomies (P<0.05). In the extensiometric analysis, statistically significant differences were identified only in the middle screw of the fixation. The photoelastic resin models showed force dissipation towards the inferior aspect of the mandible in both SSRO models. Conclusion: We found that osteotomy of the inferior aspect did not influence the mechanical performance for osteosynthesis with an inverted L system.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Proximal contact plays an important role in the stability and maintenance of the integrity of the dental arches. However, it is difficult to evaluate quantitatively the tightness of proximal tooth contact (TPTC). PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to measure the TPTC in permanent dentition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten young adult volunteers with healthy dentition participated in this experiment. The TPTC between the teeth of both the maxilla and the mandible was measured at rest state by a novel device which records the TPTC by pulling of a stainless steel strip (0.03 mm thick) using the electric motor. One-way ANOVA test was used to compare the values in all measured area. When a statistically significant difference was calculated, Bonferroni correction was applied. Independent samples t-test was used to compare the values in male and female. RESULTS: The lowest TPTC and the highest TPTC was measured between the lower central incisors (0.87 ${\pm}$ 0.20 N), and between the lower left first molar and second molar (1.99 ${\pm}$ 0.68 N), respectively. All TPTC per quadrant demonstrated a similar pattern of a continuous increased gradient in an anterior-posterior direction. There are no significant difference between the maxilla and mandible. CONCLUSION: The TPTC was measured quantitatively by a novel device and decreased progressively in a posterior-anterior direction.
