Explosion and fires can occur in all segments of chemical and petroleum industries because of complexity of process, usage and storage of flammable and reactive chemicals, and operating conditions of high pressure and temperatures. Especially chemical plants have high possibility of the occurrence of BLEVE(Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion)and Fireball. In this study, a computer program was developed for the effect assessment of BLEVE and Fireball. BLEVE was analysed by three explosion models of physical explosion model, isothermal expansion model and adiabatic expansion model and Fireball using solid model. The parametric sensitivity analysis has been done for the models of BLEVE and Fireball. The damage by BLEVE and Fireball of Benzene and Toluene and m-Xylene were estimated.
In order to evaluate the risk assessment of Fireball, a program, FIRESTOR, was developed. With this program, thermal fluxes due to the fireball of propane and n-butane were predicted to analyze the damage of Puchen gas explosion accident and thermal fluxes compared with the BLEVE ESTIMATOR, and commercial program SAFER Dupont Co. Thermal fluxes with variation of distance from the explosion source by BLEVE ESTIMATOR, SAFER and FIRESTOR was made a comparative analysis each other for the constant pressure of propane and n-butane. The values calculated by FIRESTOR were between those by BLEVE ESTIMATOR and SAFER. Consequently FIRESTOR is proved to be an good program to analyze the damage of Fireball.
We develop a numerical method for solving the radiation hydrodynamic equations in one-dimensional spherical coordinates. The present method is validated through simulations of shock tube, thermal radiative diffusion and point explosion problems. The transient growth of the fireball is investigated by varying explosion yields. The present study clearly captures well-known breakaway phenomena related to the shock separation between pressure waves and thermal shock front. The fireball radius at the breakaway point is roughly increased by the yield to power of 0.4.
On September 23, 2020, at 1:39 a.m., a bright fireball above Seocheon was observed across the country. Two fireball explosions were identified in the images of the All-Sky Camera (ASC), and the shock waves were recorded at seismic and infrasound stations in the southwestern Korean Peninsula. The location of the explosion was estimated by a Bayesian-based location method using the arrival times of the fireball-associated seismic and infrasound signals at 17 stations. Realistic azimuth- and rang-dependent propagation speeds of sound waves were incorporated into the location method to increase the reliability of the results. The location of the sound source was found to be 36.050°N, 126.855°E at an altitude of 35 km, which was close to the location of the second fireball explosion. The two explosions were identified as sequential infrasound arrivals at local infrasound stations. Simulations of waveforms for long ranges explain the detection results at distant infrasound stations, up to ~266 km from the sound source. The dominant period of the signals recorded at five infrasound stations is about 0.4 s. A period-energy relation suggests the explosion energy was equivalent to ~0.3 ton of TNT.
The summer polar lower thermosphere (90-100 km) has an interesting connection to meteors, adjacent to the mesopause region attaining the lowest temperature in summer. Meteors supply condensation nuclei for charged ice particles causing polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE). We report the observation of meteor trail with nearly horizontal transit at high speed (20-50 km/s), and at last with re-enhanced echo power followed by diffusive echoes. Changes in phase difference between radar receivers aligned in meridional and zonal directions are used to determine variations in horizontal displacements and speeds with respect to time by taking advantage of radar interferometric analysis. The actual transit of echo target is observed along the straight pathway vertically and horizontally extended as much as a distance of at least 24 km and at most 29 km. The meteor trail initially has a signature similar to 'head echoes', with travel speeds from 20 - 50 km/s. It subsequently transforms into a different type of echo target including specular echo and then finally the power reenhanced. The reenhancement of echo power is followed by fume-like diffusive echoes, indicating sudden release of plasma as like explosive process probably involved. We discuss a possible role of meteor-triggered secondary plasma trail, such as fireball embedded with electrical discharge that continuously varies the power and transit speed.
This study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of uniconazole in ameliorating low and high temperature injury in tomato plants(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cvs. Fireball and Patio). Plants were given a soil drench of 0, 0.001, 0.01 or $0.1mg{\cdot}pot^{-1}$ uniconazole, and after 14 days, were treated with 12-h day/12-h night cycles at $25/25^{\circ}C$, $2.5/25^{\circ}C$, $25/2.5^{\circ}C$ or $40/40^{\circ}C$ for 4 days in controlled-environment chamber. Number of damaged leaves per plant, reduction of stem elongation, and overall injury were high at $2.5/25^{\circ}C$, but more reduction of leaf elongation, delay of flowering, and abortion of floral bud were observed in plants at $40/40^{\circ}C$. There was difference in degree of injury between cultivars, thus, 'Fireball' was much affected by unfavorable temperature regimes. All concentrations of uniconazole reduced leaf and stem elongation, increased total chlorophyll concentration, delayed flowering, and significantly provided protection against low and high temperature injury in two cultivars. In general, the application of uniconazole did not inhibit flowering delay and floral bud abortion induced by high and low temperature exposure. Our results support the hypothesis that the role of uniconazole is related to defense system against oxidative stress induced by low temperature stress. Further research is required to clarifu the phytoprotective mechanism of this compound agaist high temperature stress.
This study selected the worst-case scenario for fireball and vapor cloud explosion (VCE) of a styrene monomer storage tank installed in a petrochemical production plant and performed damage prediction and accident impact analysis. The range of influence of radiant heat and overpressure due to fireball and vapor VCE during the abnormal polymerization reaction of styrene monomer, the main component of the mixed residue oil storage tank, was quantitatively analyzed by applying the e-CA accident damage prediction program. The damage impact areas of radiant heat and explosion overpressure are analyzed to have a maximum radius of 1,150m and 626m, respectively. People within 1,150m of radiant heat of 4kW/m2 may have their skin swell when exposed to it for 20 seconds. In buildings within 626m, where an explosion overpressure of 21kPa is applied, steel structures may be damaged and separated from the foundation, and people may suffer physical injuries. In the event of a fire, explosion or leak, determine the risk standards such as the degree of risk and acceptability to workers in the work place, nearby residents, or surrounding facilities due to radiant heat or overpressure, identify the hazards and risks of the materials handled, and establish an emergency response system. It is expected that it will be helpful in establishing measures to minimize damage to workplaces through improvement and investment activities.
In this paper, We have analyzed the application characteristics of the three different consequence programs(SuperChems Pro., PHAST Pro., and SAFER Trace) for the models (pool fire, jet fire & flare, fireball, flash fire) based on the four possible accident scenarios. And we have proposed a development direction of fire consequence analysis models using the related theories and the results analysis of consequence programs.

Buried natural gas pipelines in densely populated urban areas have serious hazards of property damages and casualties generated by release, dispersion, fire and explosion of gas caused by outside or inside failures. So as to prevent any accident in advance, managers implement danger management based on quantitative risk analysis. In order to evaluate quantitative risk about buried natural gas pipelines, we need calculation for radiant heat and pressure wave caused by calculation for release rate of chemical material, dispersion analysis, fire or explosion modeling through consequence analysis in priority, in this paper, we carry out calculation for release rate of pressured natural gas, radiant heat of fireball based in accident scenario of actual "San Bruno" buried high pressured pipelines through models which CCPS, TNO provide and compare with an actual damage result.

The temperature profiles upon high speed impact of reactive structural materials were analyzed. A two color pyrometer, which included high-speed camera, spectral splitter, and band pass filters, was utilized to measure transient temperature profiles during and after reactive metal samples impacted into steel plate with velocities of 1600~1700 m/s. The spatial temperature distribution was analyzed from the ratio of spectral radiances at two different wavelength in infrared zone, i.e. 700 and 900 nm. The measured temperatures were calibrated with black body source. Two different types of metal samples, namely aluminum and nickel, were employed to understand reaction behavior upon the impact of samples in ambient condition. According to our experiments, the Ni sample appeared to barely react with ambient air producing an instant small fireball, while Al sample reacts violently with air generating a relatively prolong fireball.
