Fire simulation for the subway carriage to the replacement of interior materials (도시철도차량 화재 안전도 평가에 대한 연구(II) (화재시뮬레이션 평가 사례를 중심으로))

  • In this study we conducted computer simulation with FDS V4.0.5 for the subway carriage of Seoul Metro to the replacement of interior materials. We tried to use the real data for the simulation by testing the interior materials in our Lab. From the result of the simulation we could confirm the fire resistance of the new interior replaced car to the chosen arson scenario case.

  • This paper present result of numerical simulation of premixed combustion around a triangle Bluff Body. And a numerical simulation of a premixed flame stabilization by a bluff body was performed using LES Model. The calculated results from the LES showed a good agreement with experiment data than k-model. Premixture combustion has flammability limit, quenching distance, smallest ignition energy has the combustion quality of the back. Bluff body makes a recirculation zone. Therefor velocity of behind bluff body is very slow. It was caused by slowly position speed and the fire occurred after the Bluff Body. Occurrence of fire it made the waste gas of high speed and the thrust made well.

Measurement of the Device Properties of a Ionization Smoke Detector to Improve Predictive Performance of the Fire Modeling (화재모델링 예측성능 개선을 위한 이온화식 연기감지기의 장치물성 측정)

  • The high prediction performance of fire detector models is essentially needed to assure the reliability of fire and evacuation modeling in the process of PBD (Performance Based fire safety Design). The main objective of the present study is to measure input information in order to predict the accurate activation time of smoke detector into a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) fire model such as FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). To end this, FDE (Fire Detector Evaluator) which can measure the device properties of detector was developed, and the input information of Heskestad and Cleary's models was measured for a ionization smoke detector. In addition, the activation times of smoke detectors predicted using default values into FDS and measured values in the present study were systematically compared. As a result, the device properties of smoke detector examined in the present study showed a significant difference compared to the default values used into FDS, which resulted in the considerable difference of up to 15 minutes or more in terms of the activation time of smoke detector. The database (DB) on device properties of various smoke and heat detectors will be built to improve the reliability of PBD in future studies.

Numerical Study on the Reacting Flow Field abound Rectangular Cross Section Bluff Body (사각 둔각물체 주위의 반응유동장에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to simulate an engine nacelle fire and to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames. Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) based on the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) was employed to clarify the characteristics of reacting flow around bluff body. The overall reaction was considered and the constant for reaction was determined from flame extinction limits of experimental results. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability and flame mode were affected mainly by vortex structure near bluff body. In the coflow configuration, air velocity at the flame extinction limit are increased with fuel velocity, which is comparable to the experiment results. Comparing with the isothermal flow field, the reacting flow produces a weak and small recirculation zone, which is result in the reductions of density and momentum due to temperature increase by reaction in the wake zone.

Effects of Char Produced from Burning Wood Combustibles on Thermal Pyrolysis (목재 가연물의 연소 시 생성되는 탄화가 열분해에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the influence of the char layer formed during the combustion process on the pyrolysis of wood combustibles, ISO 5660-1 cone calorimetry experiments and Fire dynamics simulator (FDS) simulations were performed, and the results from these two methods were compared. The wood combustible selected as the fuel for this study, Douglas fir, has been widely used for the production of building materials, furniture, etc. The heat release rate (HRR) measured from the cone calorimetry experiment was in good agreement with the result predicted by the FDS simulation. However, the FDS simulation failed to predict the heat released by the smoldering combustion process, due to the absence of the char surface reaction in the model. The FDS simulation results clearly indicate that the char layer formed on the surface of combustibles produces a thermal barrier which prevents heat transfer to the interior, thickening the thermal depth and thus reducing the pyrolysis rate of combustibles.

  • In this study, transient 3D numerical simulations were performed to analyze the characteristics of fire driven flow for smoke ventilation system operating conditions in the deeply underground subway station. The smoke flow patterns were compared and discussed under smoke fan operating mode and off mode in the platform. Soongsil Univ. station(line number 7)was chosen for simulation which was the one of the deepest underground subway stations in the each lines of Seoul. The geometry for model is 365m in length include railway, 23.5m for width, 47m for depth. Therefore 10,000,000 structured grids were used for fire simulation. The parallel computational method for fast calculation was employed to compute the heat and mass transfer eqn's with 6 CPUs(Intel 3.0GHz Dual CPU, 12Cores) of the linux clustering machine. The fire driven flow was simulated with using FDS code in which LES method was applied. The Heat release rate was 10MW and The Ultrafast model was applied for the growing model of the fire source.

  • According to the section A-VI/3 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), Water-based firefighting training center is mandatory to obtain onboard certificates. This space, being similar to fire situations on ships requires that safety measures be quantified to ensure occupant safety and establish operational standards. For fire safety evaluation, cases were designed based on the presence or absence of smoke control equipment using Pyrosim based on Fire Dynamics Simulation (FDS). Vector analysis was performed to evaluate flow of smoke and heat. Available safe escape time / required safe escpae time (ASET/RSET) analysis was conducted to evaluate safety by comparing the interpreted numerical results through Pathfinder. During safety evaluation of the current operational condition, the appropriateness of the function of each smoke control equipment was numerically and visually indicated. The emergency situation with dust collector stopped was expressed by each evacuation time and safety margin of 111.2 seconds, suggesting that be used as a standard of evacuation time.

  • The study aims at analyzing an underground station refuge model using EXODUS, one of the refuge simulation programs. The model for simulation is the Daegu Subway (Joongang-ro station). The details of the accident are referred to as the simulation condition the refuge time of traveling from the $3^{rd}$ basement platform to the $1^{st}$ basement is mainly calculated, with passengers numbering 1,000 including 329 at car 1079, 320 at car 1080, and 360 who are not on board. Reference data is used to set up the position of passengers. CFAST fire simulator is also used, and a fast curve among the $t^2$ growth curves, selected as fire growth scenario. The zone is divided into a total of 24 including 18 at the $3^{rd}$ basement platform and 6 at the $2^{nd}$ basement the $1^{st}$ basement is excluded in the fire simulation, however.

Experimental and Numerical Study of the Thermal Decomposition of an Epoxy-based Intumescent Coating (실험과 계산을 통한 에폭시 계열 내화도료의 열분해에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigates the characteristics of thermal decomposition of an epoxy-based intumescent paint using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and numerical simulation. A mathematical and numerical model is introduced to describe mass loss profiles of the epoxy-based intumescent coating induced by the thermal decomposition process. The decomposition scheme covers a range of complexity by employing simplified 4-step sequential reactions to describe the simultaneous thermal decomposition processes. The reaction rates are expressed by the Arrhenius law, and reaction parameters are optimized to fit the degradation behavior seen during thermogravimetric (TG) experiments. The experimental results show a major 2-step degradation under nitrogen and a 3-step degradation in an air environment. The experiment also shows that oxygen takes part in the stabilization of the intumescent coating between 200 and $500^{\circ}C$. The simulation results show that the proposed model effectively predicts the experimental mass loss as a function of time except for temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$, which were intentionally not included in the model. The maximum error in the simulation was less than 3%.
