To develope an efficient fire fighter’s uniform for the fire fighting work and body protection, this study examined the regulations of fire lighter’s uniform and surveyed the actual wearing conditions, satisfaction degree, preferred color and design others. The results are as follows; 1. As for the satisfaction degree, the degree was normal in ordinary, low in working uniform and heat-proof uniform and very low in water-proof uniform about its design, size, color and materials. 2. As for the color, red was preferred for the working uniform and water-proof uniform. Blue, yellow and green was preferred next for corking uniform and yellow and blue for water-proof uniform. 3. As for the design, fire fighters wanted partial revision of the present uniform. They preferred stretchy training wear style and overact style in order. For the water-proof uniform, they preferred hip-length suit and pants and next to it they liked flee-length suit, waist belt and overact in order. 4. As for the regulations of the uniform, they wanted some addition in casual uniform, water-proof pants and water-proof gloves, and some deletion in the thermal barrier of water-proof uniform and ordinary uniform. 5. As for the distribution of the uniforms, the use of coupons was highly preferred.
This study aims to provide fundamental information required to establish an efficient maintenance and management system for fire fighting clothing which takes into account the domestic fire protection environment and situation. There aren't any detailed regulations and appropriate pre-inspection systems which would be required for proper maintenance of fire fighting clothing, as well as any test methods to determine the life spans of fire fighting clothing properly. Thus, this study tries to analyze the problems in use of fire fighting clothing and its maintenance situation and summarize overseas maintenance situation for fire fighting clothing. As a result, it is found that domestic fire fighting clothing is washed, repaired, and stored without any systematic management regulations. It is also found that the life spans of fire fighting clothing are determined, based on part of overseas management regulations on fire fighting clothing. Therefore, it is imperative to set up efficient management regulations and test methods for fire fighting clothing which would be required for efficient use of the fire fighting budgets and the life safety of fire fighters.

The fire protection system for high-rise buildings is currently confined to the preparation of sprinklers, emergency stairs, and exit and monitoring systems. On the other hand, an integrated system, including the model with scenario-based actions, is required for effective fire protection. An integrated fire protection system is needed to operate and manage the total cycle of the fire protection. In this study, an integrated fire protection system, which included sensing and consequent processes related to fire emergencies, was designed and implemented. The designed scheme can gather and analyze the data of the production, operation, and consumption patterns as it integrates fire protection systems for fire fighters and evacuating people. The integrated fire protection technology and system, which has target performance with satisfied 1/2 sec transaction response time and 1.2 transactions per second, is expected to contribute to market creation in converged technology-based fire protection fields.

This paper presents the development of fire-fighting and rescue robot for Outdoor Environment. In the procedure of this development, we follow Target Oriented Design (TOD) which is recognized as the systematic methodology to design a system by specifying the target clearly. For some real fire fighting tasks (e.g. tasks in shopping street and a market), narrow road make it difficult for existing fire engine to access the firing place. On the other hand, for dangerous tasks (e.g. gasoline station and a storehouse) the explosive materials make it impossible for fire-fighters to access the firing place. Moreover, the smoke and the high-temperature caused by fire make fire fighting difficult. In this situation, the solution is to develop the fire-fighting and rescue robot. TOD is performed firstly by analyzing the environment properties of fro place and the demanded tasks and the fire-fighting and rescue robot is manufactured. For safety, the fire fighting robot should be controlled by remote operation to keep the operator away from the fire, and the control system is divided into three parts: the robot controllers, controller for remote operating device and wireless communication system. We have selected and developed appropriate hardware and software for each part of control system with considering TOD. As a result, the fire-fighting robot functions correctly and the performance and usefulness of our control architecture is validated by successfully performing some fire-fighting tasks.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to suggest a systematic improvement plan for strengthening fire fighting ability of domestic rack- type warehouse buildings. Method: A fire case of small warehouse with sandwich panel structure and four design review of large warehouse with fire endurance structure were analyzed. Also, interviewed a group of 11 fire fighters who had 20 years field experience. Results: A provision of mobile equipment for initial fire fighting, accessibility of more than three sides, installation of internal entrance windows, proper placement of outdoor fire fighting equipment, image processing of fire site informations, and provide more incentives on the field commander are main factors of improvement plan. Conclusion: Effective standard operation procedures (SOP) and safety standards should be established and applied for each stage of the dispatch and on-site response considering the fire characteristics and risk factors of each warehouse by scale.
The purpose of this study is to investigate work related diseases in Korean firefighters and to prepare the preventive measure for health management for the firefighters. Structured self-reported questionnaire was distributed to the firefighters. The result revealed that 37.7% of fire fighters had chronic diseases and 12.3% had chronic low back pains. The affected parts included lumbar region(41.5%), shoulder(33.0%), and neck(23.6%). The affected parts caused physical pain and work discomfort for more than a month. A total of 54.1% firefighters visited to the hospital within a year. This results suggest that it is necessary to develop the health promotion program for the prevention of musculoskeletal disease and regular health checkup for the acute disorders caused by workload.

This study sought for an improvement plan of the overall preventive activity of Korean Citizen-Corps-Active-In-Disaster(CAIND) by utilizing the fact that The fire-fighters, who are focusing on social disaster response works, are surveyed for their awareness of the vivid expertise to Korean CAIND. This group is defined as the assistant organization in law about disaster prevention which, the local residents willingly made to handle the situation of disaster occurrence. Since the characteristics of volunteer activities are also inherent, related issues are also reviewed at the same time to resolve any unclear arguments by disaster prevention activity characteristics of Korean Citizen Corps Active in Disaster. Through the results, the study provided three major suggestions for an improvement plan. The results of the study are as follows: First, the quota management system of Korean CAIND that considers the characteristics of rural areas should be actively supplemented. Second, the current reward system for Korean CAIND activities at large disaster sites should be surely improved. Third, the current education and training system of Korean CAIND to satisfy regional conditions should be newly established. The results of this study are largely expected to be utilized as a basic data to develop Korean CAIND in the future.
This article is to examine the influence of occupational stress, socio-psychological factors and quality of sleep on fatigue symptoms from firefighters in fire service. The correlation coefficients were obtained by a tool of Pearson analysis, and covariance structure analysis was performed on the factors affecting the level of fatigue symptoms. This result suggests that the level of firefighters' fatigue symptoms in fire service. has a causal effect with occupational stress, socio-psychological factors and quality of sleep. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the work environment and to increase organizational support to deal with firefighters' fatigue in fire service.
Ventilation fans utilized correctly can increase the effectiveness of fire fighters and survivability of occupants. It is possible to increase the pressure of a corridor to prevent the infiltration of smoke. In this study, experiments were carried out to evaluate ventilation effectiveness in corridor fires. Corridor used in the experiment was 20 m long. Heptane was used as a fuel. Temperature and visibility were measured in order to evaluate ventilation effectiveness according to the position of a vent. Vent distance ranged from 0 m to 4 m and height varied from 0 m to 1.5 m. When the vent was positioned 2 m long and 0.75 m high the result was most effective.
