Trabecular bone can be accurately represented using image-based finite element modeling and analysis of these bone models is widely used to predict their mechanical properties. However, the choice of thresholding technique, a necessary step in converting grayscale images to finite element models which can thus significantly influence the structure of the resulting finite element model, is often overlooked. Therefore, we investigated the effects of thresholding techniques on micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) based finite element models of trabecular bone. Three types of thresholding techniques were applied to micro-CT images of trabecular bone which resulted in three unique finite element models for each specimen. Bone volume fractions and apparent moduli were predicted for each model and compared to experimental results. Our findings suggest that predictions of apparent properties agree well with experimental measurements regardless of the choice of thresholding technique in micro CT images of trabecular bone.
In this work, we developed an accurate and efficient radiative finite volume method applicable for the complex 2D planar and 3D geometries using an unstructured-grid finite volume method. The present numerical model has fully been validated by several benchmark cases including the radiative heat transfer in quadrilateral enclosure with isothermal medium, tetrahedral enclosure, a three-dimensional idealized furnace, as well as convection-coupled radiative heat transfer in a square enclosure. The numerical results for all cases are well agreed with the previous results. Special emphasis is given to the parallelization of the unstructured-grid radiative FVM using the domain decomposition approach. Numerical results indicate that the present parallel unstructured-grid FVM has the good performance in terms of accuracy, geometric flexibility, and computational efficiency.
In this paper, a stabilized-penalized collocated finite volume (SPCFV) scheme is developed and studied for the stationary generalized Navier-Stokes equations with mixed Dirichlet-traction boundary conditions modelling an incompressible biological fluid flow. This method is based on the lowest order approximation (piecewise constants) for both velocity and pressure unknowns. The stabilization-penalization is performed by adding discrete pressure terms to the approximate formulation. These simultaneously involve discrete jump pressures through the interior volume-boundaries and discrete pressures of volumes on the domain boundary. Stability, existence and uniqueness of discrete solutions are established. Moreover, a convergence analysis of the nonlinear solver is also provided. Numerical results from model tests are performed to demonstrate the stability, optimal convergence in the usual L2 and discrete H1 norms as well as robustness of the proposed scheme with respect to the choice of the given traction vector.
Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model is adopted by using an IS-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness direction. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous works. In addition, the displacements, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses are analyzed for the variation of FGM thickness ratio and volume fraction distribution.Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. The accurate permeability for preform is critical to model and design the impregnation of fluid resin in the composite manufacturing process. In this study, the in-plane and transverse permeability for a woven fabric are predicted numerically through the coupled flow model which combines microscopic with macroscopic flow. The microscopic and macroscopic flow which are flows within the micro-unit and macro-unit cell, respectively, are calculated by using 3-D CVFEM(control volume finite element method). To avoid checker-board pressure field and improve the efficiency on numerical computation, A new interpolation function for velocity is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. The permeability of plain woven fabric is measured through unidirectional flow experiment and compared with the permeability calculated numerically. Based on the good agreement of the results, the relationships between the permeability and the structures of preform such as the fiber volume fraction and stacking effect can be understood. The reverse and the simple stacking are taken in account. Unlike past literatures, this study is based on more realistic unit cell and the improved prediction of permeability can be achieved. It is observed that in-plane flow is more dominant than transverse flow in the real flow through preform and the stacking effect of multi-layered preform is negligible. Consequently, the proposed coupled flow model can be applied to modeling of real composite materials processing.
Turbulent flow field in a subchannel of bare rod bundles has been numerically simulated using the control volume based finite element method. Launder & Ying model of Reynolds stress and Lam & Bremhorst low-Reynolds number model are implemented in k-$\varepsilon$ equations and momentum equations. Secondary flows are simulated using the stream function and vorticity approach. The control volume based finite element method enable to use the upwind scheme (donor cell scheme). Sensitivity of the constants in the models are studied, and proper values are found to get the close result to the measured flow distributions.
A numerical study was performed to investigate the flow field and the heat transfer characteristics occurring in high power density welding which is important in many fields of engineering applications. A two dimensional quasi-steady state of keyhole welding model is simulated by using the finite volume methods. It is shown that the shape of isothermal line is elliptic and the temperature gradient is very steep compared with other welding method and the welding speed has on welding width and observed beam power.
In the present paper experimental and numerical analysis of hook-ended steel fiber reinforced concrete is carried out. The experimental tests are performed on notched beams loaded in 3-point bending using fiber volume fractions up to 1.5%. The numerical analysis of fiber reinforced concrete beams is performed at meso scale. The concrete is discretized with 3D solid finite elements and microplane model is used as a constitutive law. The fibers are modelled by randomly generated 1D truss finite elements, which are connected with concrete matrix by discrete bond-slip relationship. It is demonstrated that the presented approach, which is based on the modelling of concrete matrix using microplane model, able to realistically replicate experimental results. In all investigated cases failure is due to the pull-out of fibers. It is shown that with increase of volume content of fibers the effective bond strength and slip capacity of fibers decreases.
In this paper optimization of volume fraction distribution in a thick hollow cylinder with finite length made of two-dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) and subjected to steady state thermal and mechanical loadings is considered. The finite element method with graded material properties within each element (graded finite elements) is used to model the structure. Volume fractions of constituent materials on a finite number of design points are taken as design variables and the volume fractions at any arbitrary point in the cylinder are obtained via cubic spline interpolation functions. The objective function selected as having the normalized effective stress equal to one at all points that leads to a uniform stress distribution in the structure. Genetic Algorithm jointed with interior penalty-function method for implementing constraints is effectively employed to find the global solution of the optimization problem. Obtained results indicates that by using the uniform distribution of normalized effective stress as objective function, considerably more efficient usage of materials can be achieved compared with the power law volume fraction distribution. Also considering uniform distribution of safety factor as design criteria instead of minimizing peak effective stress affects remarkably the optimum volume fractions.
