In this study, reliability analyses of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) corbels based on stochastic finite element were performed for the first time in literature. Prior to stochastic finite element analysis, an experimental database of 84 sfrc corbels was gathered from literature. These sfrc corbels were modeled by a special finite element program. Results of experimental studies and finite element analysis were compared and found to be very close to each other. Furthermore experimental crack patterns of corbel were compared with finite element crack patterns and were observed to be quite similar. After verification of the finite element models, stochastic finite element analyses were implemented by a specialized finite element module. As a result of stochastic finite element analysis, appropriate probability distribution functions (PDF's) were proposed. Finally, coefficient of variation, bias and strength reduction (resistance) factors were proposed for sfrc corbels as a consequence of stochastic based reliability analysis.
The progressive failure following strain localization in concrete can be analyzed effectively using finite element modeling of fracture process zone of concrete with a finite element embedded discontinuity. In this study, a finite element with embedded discontinuous line is utilized for the analysis of progressive failure in concrete. The finite element with embedded discontinuity is a kind of discrete crack element, but the difficulties in discrete crack approach such as remeshing or adding new nodes along with crack growth can be avoided. Using a discontinuous shape function for this element, the displacement discontinuity is embedded within an element and its constitutive equation is modeled from the modeling of fracture process zone. The element stiffness matrix is derived and its dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Then, a finite element analysis program with employed algorithms is developed and failure analysis results using developed finite element program are verified through the comparison with experimental data and other analysis results.
This study is concerned with the application of new criterion for membrane/shell mixed element in the rigid-plastic finite element analysis and elastic-plastic finite element analysis. The membrane/shell mixed element can be selctively adapted to the pure stretching condition by using membrane or a shell element in the bending effect areas. Thus, membrane/shell mixed element requires a efficient criterion for a distinction between membrane and shell element. In the present study introduce the criterion using the angle of between two element and confirm a generality of criterion from appling the theory to a rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic problems.

In this paper, we investigate the effect and the importance of the accuracy of finite element analysis in the shape optimization based on the finite element method and improve the existing finite element which has inaccuracy in some cases. And then, the shape optimization is performed by using the improved finite element. One of the main stream to improve finite element is the prevention of locking phenomenon. In case of bending dominant problems, finite element solutions cannot be reliable because of shear locking phenomenon. In the process of shape optimization, the mesh distortion is large due to the change of the structure outline. So, we have to raise the accuracy of finite element analysis for the large mesh distortion. We cannot guarantee the accurate result unless the finite element itself is accurate or the finite elements are remeshed. So, we approach to more accurate shape optimization to diminish these inaccuracies by improving the existing finite element. The shape optimization using the modified finite element is applied to a two and three dimensional simple beam. Results show that the modified finite element has improved the optimization results.

Individual malocclusions were incorporated in the finite element The movement of teeth and initial stress associated with the treatment of orthodontics have been successfully studied using the finite element method. To reduce the effort in preprocessing of finite element analysis, we developed two types of three-dimensional finite element models based on the standard teeth model. Individual malocclusions were incorporated in the finite element models by considering the measuring factors such as angulation, crown inclination, rotation and translations. The finite element analysis for the wire activation with a T-loop arch wire was carried out. Mechanical behavior on the movement and the initial stress for the malocclusion finite element model was shown to agree with the objectives of the actual treatment. Finite element models and procedures of analysis developed in this study would be suitably utilized for the design of initial shape of the wire and determination of activation displacements.
The finite element method is wide used in simulation in the biomechanical structures, but a lack of studies concerning finite element mesh quality in biomechanics is a reality. The present study intends to analyze the importance of the mesh quality in the finite element model results from humeral structure. A sensitivity analysis of finite element models (FEM) is presented for the humeral bone and cartilage structures. The geometry of bone and cartilage was acquired from CT scan and geometry reconstructed. The study includes 54 models from same bone geometry, with different mesh densities, constructed with tetrahedral linear elements. A finite element simulation representing the glenohumeral-joint reaction force applied on the humerus during $90^{\circ}$ abduction, with external load as the critical condition. Results from the finite element models suggest a mesh with 1.5 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.6 mm as suitable mesh sizes for cortical bone, trabecular bone and humeral cartilage, respectively. Relatively to the higher minimum principal strains are located at the proximal humerus diaphysis, and its highest value is found at the trabecular bone neck. The present study indicates the minimum mesh size in the finite element analyses in humeral structure. The cortical and trabecular bone, as well as cartilage, may not be correctly represented by meshes of the same size. The strain results presented the critical regions during the $90^{\circ}$ abduction.
Various transition elements are used in general for the effective finite element analysis of complicated mechanical structures. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element, which can b e used for connecting a C1-continuity beam element to a continuum solid element, is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite element are derived to meet the compatibility condition, and a transition element equation is formulated by the conventional finite element procedure. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition element, numerical tests are performed for various examples. As a result of this study, following conclusions are obtained. (1) The proposed transition element, which meets the compatibility of the primary variables, exhibits excellent accuracy. (2) In case of using the proposed transition element, the number of nodes in the finite element model may be considerably reduced and the model construction becomes more convenient. (3) This formulation method can be applied to the usage of higher order elements.
In the shape optimization based on the finite element method, the accuracy of finite element analysis of a given structure is important to determine the final shape. In case of a bending dominant problem, finite element solutions by the full integration scheme are not reliable because of the locking phenomenon. Furthermore, in the process of shape optimization, the mesh distortion is large due to the change of the structure outline: therefore, we cannot guarantee the accurate result unless the finite element itself is accurate. We approach to more accurate shape optimization to diminish these inaccuracies by improving the existing finite element. The shape optimization using the modified finite element is applied to a two-dimensional simple beam. Results show that the modified finite element have improved the optimization results.

This study is the bending analysis of rectangular plates with 4-sides simply supported by Finite Element Method using substructuring technique. In finite element method, as the more number of finite element, the more dimension of matrix, it is difficult to obtain accuracy solution. In this paper substructuring technique is applied to finite element method in order to reduce the dimension of matrix according to the number of finite element mesh. To validate finite element method using substructuring technique, deflections and moments of rectangular plates by that method is compared with those of references. Considering the symmetry of the plate and load, one fourth of plate is analyzed. Operating time and the error of solutions according to the number of finite element mesh and substructure are compared with each other.
In this study, equation of finite element is formulated to analyze relations of large deformation-small deformation considering geometrical nonlinear for membrane structure. Total Lagrangian Formulation(TLF) is introduced to formulate theory and equation of motion considering Triangular Constant Strain(TCS) element in finite, element analysis is formulated. Finite element program is made by equation of motion considering TLF. This study analyzed a variety of examples, so compared with the past results.
