  • This paper describes error estimate mothod for adaptive finite element analysis of two dimensional electrostatic and magnetostatic field problems. To estimate the local errors, divergence theorem is used for electrostatic field and Ampere's circuital law for magnetostatic field. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed error estimators, adaptive finite element computations are performed using the proposed error estimators. The rates of convergence of global errors are comparable with those of existing adaptive finite element schemes which make use of field continuity conditions between element boundaries. This algorithm of error estimate can be easily implemented because of its simplicity. Especially, when the value of charge in electrostatic field and the value of current in magnetostatic field are to be figured out, this method is considerded to be preferable to other approaches.

  • Practical structures are subject not only to tension but also to shear and torsional loading. In this study, the mode 1 and 2 stress intensity factors of specimens were calculated by using elastic finite element mothod. The stress fields at the crack tip subjected to mixed-mode loading were also studied by usingf eleatic finite element method and were compared with theoretical results. The three-point-bending, four-point-bending, and mixed-mode-loading experiment were carried out. And, crack propagation rate da/dN and crack growth direction were examined. Also, the elastic finite element method was applied to calculate the stress intensity factors of branch crack tip and we relate the stress intenity factor range of branch crack tip(the result of FEM) to crack propagation rate(the experimental result). The .DELTA. -da/dN relation corelated with that of mode 1.

  • An analysjs model for calculation the motion accuarcy of double sides hydrostatic table is proposed in thn paper. For the analysis of motion accuracy, profiles of each rails are assumed as periodic function, and represented using Fourier coefficients. Variahon of bearing clearance is represented as the vanation of linear, angular displacement of table and profiles of rails. Motion accuracy is calculated in the basis of finite element analysis on the pressure dutributmn of table. In order to improve calculating time in the analysis of motion accuracy, The proposed modeling method converts double sides table to single side table equivalently Results by the proposed method 1s compared with directly caculated results mdyhcally, and also compared wlth experimental results. From the theoretical and experimental analysis, it is confirmed that the proposed modeling mothod is very effective to analyze the motion accuracy of dauble sides hydrostatic table.

  • The effect of concrete strength on shear cracking strength in reinforced concrete beams is investigated analytically. The quantitative response of reinforced concrete beam-end-part with varing concrete stiffness, which is a function of concrete compressive strength, is examined utilizing a finite element mothod. The result indicates that the severer shear stress localization/concentration takes place in the beam having higher concrete strength. Thus the increase ratio of shear cracking strength with respect to concrete compressive strength decreases as the concrete strength becoms higher.

  • Coiling processes of filaments need precise work and standardization. It is important to maintain equal pitch of filaments. Uniform pitch of filaments is one of the dominant elements of life time and efficiency of bulbs. First coiling process of filament wires is modeled by nonlinear contact problem between filaments and mandrel. Analysis of coiling process using finite element method is conducted to consider manufacturing parameters and pitch distance is calculated under the given conditions. Also image detecting system is developed to inspect uniformity of pitch. This system will be used to inspect quality of filaments during coiling processes.

  • A finite element inverse method is introduced for direct prediction of blank shapes, strain distributions, and reliable intermediate shapes from desired final shapes in axisymmetric multi-step deep drawing processes. This mothod enables the determination of process disign. The approach deals with the Hencky's deformation theory. Hill's second order yield criterion, simplified boundary conditions, and minimization of plastic work with constraints. The algorithm developed is applied to motor case forming, and cylindrical cup drawing with the large limit drawing ratio so that it confirms its validity by demonstrating resonably accurate numerical results of each problem. Numerical examples reveal the reason of difficulties in motor case forming with corresponding limit diagrams.

  • In multi-purpose lathe, the design of tilting turret slide system has an important and critical role to enhance accuracy of the machining process. Tilting turret unit is traveled by 3-axis slide systems. There is a need to design this part very carefully. In this research, 3-axis sliding system with tilting turret is modeled by considering the element dividing, material properties, and boundary conditions using MSC/PATRAN. Mode and frequency analysis of each structures such as saddle, careg, and turret are simulated by MSC/NASTRAN, for the purpose of developing the effective design. The results of mode analysis and frequency analysis are visualized with PATRAN, and the mothod which can solve the resornance problem by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of each axe is developed as well.

  • In cold forming processes, due to high working pressure action on the die surface, failure mechanics must be considered before die design. One of the main reasons of die failure in industrial application of metal forming technologies is wear. Die wear affects the tolerances of formed parts, metal flow and costs of process etc. The only way to control these failures into devlop methods which allow prediction of die wear and which are suited to be used in the design state in order to optimize the process. In this paper, the forming propcesses that involve cold forward extrusion and wire drawing were simulated by rigid plastic finite element method and its output were used for predicting die wear by Archard wear model. The simulation results were compared with the measured worn dies.

  • A geometric non-linear finite element formulation of CRTS reflector subjected to displacement loads, corresponding to the successional assembly steps of the reflector, is presented in order to determine the initial static equilibrium state based on the displacement incremental method. Parametric analyses of the influence of cables and mechanical properties of the reflector on the shape error between reference and equilibrium surfaces have been studied. These results of the present study are compared with the others using Galerkin mothod and NASS 98 program to demonstrate the feasibility.

  • These days the circular cross section cofferdam has been frequently used for the earth retaining structures or cut off wall such as ventilating opening, intake tower in cofferdam, shaft for emergency. By the arching effect, the circular cross section type cofferdam has more advantage than a polygon cofferdam in terms of the structural forces and moment. This paper shows the proper approach to analyze the circular cross section cofferdam using 2D Finite Element Method (FEM) for the circular stiffener (ring beam) evaluation. Besides, the various shapes of cofferdam indluding circular cross section have modeled the 3D Finite Element Mothod (FEM). The circular cross section cofferdam shows the minimum reaction force compared with the other shapes of cofferdam.
