  • Machine tool design concepts have evolved towards high efficiency, accurate precision. high structural integrity, and multi-functional systems. Like many other structures, machine tools are also composed of many parts. When these parts are assembled, many kinds of joints are used. In the finite element analysis of these assembled structures, most joints are commonly considered as rigid joints. But, to get the more accurate solution, we need to model these joints in a appropriate manner. In this study, rational dynamic modeling and analysis method for complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. For modeling of slide way joints, a general modeling technique is used by influence coefficients method which is applied to the conversion of detailed finite element model to the equivalent reduced joint model. The theoretical part of this method is illustrated and the method is applied to the structure with slide way joint. In this method. the non-linearity of the contact surfaces is considered within a proper range and the boundary effect of the joint model can be eliminated. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam and slide way joints of the vertical type lathe. The method can also be used to other kinds of joint modeling. The results of these analysis were compared with those of Yoshimura models and rigid joint models. which demonstrated the practical applicability of the proposed method.

  • A simplified finite element analysis method is proposed to calculate elasto-plastic responses of general hardening materials. The method provides an effective tool to calculate structural elasto-plastic responses. Numerical examples have demonstrated that its computational efficiency is very much higher than that of the incremental elasto-plastic finite element analysis, and computational results are accurate enough to meet the need of engineering practice. Compared with the general elasto-plastic incremental finite element analysis, the proposed method can avoid the incremental iteration of nodal displacements and the constitutive equation integration at each Gauss integral point, and computational results are accurate enough to meet the need of engineering practice.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element method and construction of equivalent-circuit for a linear ultrasonic motor are presented. The validity of three-dimensional finite element routine in this paper is experimentally confirmed by analyzing impedance of a piezoelectric transducer. Using this confirmed finite element routine, impedance and vibration mode of a linear ultrasonic motor are calculated. Elliptical motion of contact point between vibrator and rail of the linear ultrasonic motor is shown for determination of contact points. By using the finite element method and analytic equations, characteristics of the linear ultrasonic motor, such as thrust force, speed, losses, powers and efficiency, are calculated. The results are confirmed by experiment. Finally, equivalent circuit parameters of the linear ultrasonic motor are obtained using the three-dimensional finite element method and analytic equations.

  • A method of stochastic finite element analysis is developed for yield a uncertainty of engineering problems. Where, a stochastic finite-element method for shapes modeling is proposed a6 a means to solve the models with the uncertainty and variety. This method is based on the probability and illustrated by a first-Order Second-Moment Method and considering the covariance of random variables. The validity and accuracy of the stochastic finite element method is verified through comparing with those solved by the conventional 2-D finite element method.

  • In this paper, FETI(Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting) method is introduced in order to improve numerical efficiency of Staggered method. The porous media theory, the Staggered method and the FETI method are briefly introduced in this paper. In addition, we account for the MPI(Message Passing Interface) library for parallel analysis, and the proposed combined Staggered method with FETI method. Finally Lagrange multipliers and CG(Conjugate Gradient) algorithm to solve decomposed domain are proposed, and then the proposed method is verified to be numerically efficient by MPI library.

  • This analytical study was carried out to make quality and productivity up in designing the frame-type furniture with semi-rigid joint by understanding the mechanical and structural behavior of the joint and by evaluating the validity of application of the time-saving Finite Element Method to its structural analysis. Slope deflection equation for rigid joint was modified to describe the moment-rotation behavior of semi-rigid joint and the joint stiffness factor(Z) could be calculated to lessen the experimental expense. It was proved that Finite Element Analysis with imaginary elements having equivalent MOE to the semi-rigid joint could be the alternative method for the structural analysis of the frame-type furniture, comparing the internal rotation of the 2-dimensional beam-to-column model with two-pin(wooden dowel) from the finite element method with other available theoretical and experimental rotation value.

  • This report deals with the process of the finite element computation and the design of the particular example tunnel (the double track section tunnel for Line 5, 7, 8 of Seoul Subway). The finite element calculations are performed with the program MISES 3 was developed from Austria which have been used in Eroupe. The principles of mechanic and mathematic analysis for the program MISES 3 are based on "The Finite Element Method -3rd Edition" by O.C zienkiewicz. The calculations are approximate analysis method divide continuum into quadrilateral element and calculate deformation and stress, according to the force equations at the node of the element. On the calculation of under excavation, this is a very convenient method and able to calculate compounded structure with tunnel lining and surrounding materials. Although calculated under the same factor and conditions, the result is not same solution, according to the shape of mesh. Therefore , it is important that we collect the construction results of NATM on the spot and by comparing the results of the finite element method with the surveying results review the validity of analysis model.sis model.

  • In this study, two dimensional and three dimensional finite element models of lower first premolar were analyzed. The mandibular specimen including a premolar was obtained from a cadaver and scanned with micro-CT. Finite element method models were reconstructed from CT images at mid-sagittal plane of the tooth. Most studies have used a wide range of value(0.07${\~}$1000MPa) for elastic modulus of periodontal ligament. The elastic modulus of the periodontal ligament was analyzed by finite element method and compared with that of experiment model. This study indicated that the model without pulp was more suitable than that with pulp in two dimensional finite element analysis.

  • The base force element method (BFEM) is a new finite element method. In this paper, a degenerated 4-mid-node plane element from concave polygonal element of BFEM was proposed. The performance of this quadrilateral element with 4 mid-edge nodes in the BFEM on complementary energy principle is studied. Four examples of linear elastic analysis for plane frame structure are presented. The influence of aspect ratio of the element is analyzed. The feasibility of the 4 mid-edge node element model of BFEM on complementary energy principles researched for plane frame problems. The results using the BFEM are compared with corresponding analytical solutions and those obtained from the standard displacement finite element method. It is revealed that the BFEM has better performance compared to the displacement model in the case of large aspect ratio.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study shear locking-free parametric earthquake analysis of thick and thin plates using Mindlin's theory, to determine the effects of the thickness/span ratio, the aspect ratio and the boundary conditions on the linear responses of thick and thin plates subjected to earthquake excitations. In the analysis, finite element method is used for spatial integration and the Newmark-${\beta}$ method is used for the time integration. Finite element formulation of the equations of the thick plate theory is derived by using higher order displacement shape functions. A computer program using finite element method is coded in C++ to analyze the plates clamped or simply supported along all four edges. In the analysis, 17-noded finite element is used. Graphs are presented that should help engineers in the design of thick plates subjected to earthquake excitations. It is concluded that 17-noded finite element can be effectively used in the earthquake analysis of thick and thin plates. It is also concluded that, in general, the changes in the thickness/span ratio are more effective on the maximum responses considered in this study than the changes in the aspect ratio.
