The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.
Modelling and analysis of a brick masonry building involves uncertainties like modelling assumptions and properties of local material. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a calibration to evaluate the dynamic properties of the structure. The response of the finite element model is improved by predicting the parameter by performing linear dynamic analysis on experimental data by comparing the acceleration. Further, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was also performed comparing the roof acceleration and damage pattern of the structure obtained analytically with the test findings. The roof accelerations obtained analytically were in good agreement with experimental roof accelerations. The damage patterns observed analytically after every shock were almost similar to that of experimental observations. Damage pattern with amplification in roof acceleration exhibit the potentiality of earthquake resistant measures in brick masonry models.

The postbuckling behavior and progressive damage of composite laminated cylindrical shell under uniform external pressure were investigated by nonlinear finite element method programming. For the finite element analysis, nine-node 3-D degenerated elements were utilized, and arc-length method including line search was adopted for the iteration and load-increment along postbuckling equilibrium path. As results. buckling load, postbucking behavior, and progressive failure f3r various composite laminated cylindrical shells were discussed.

This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers using damage indices. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Damage indices aim to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage reinforced concrete bridge piers sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers is verified by comparison with the reliable experimental results.
The strain localization of concrete is a phenomenon such that the deformation of concrete is localized in finite region along with softening behavior. The objective of this paper is to develop a plasticity and damage algorithm for the finite element analysis of the strain-localization in concrete. In this paper, concrete member under strain localization is modeled with localized zone and non-localized zone. For modeling of the localized zone in concrete under strain localization, a general Drucker-Prager failure criterion by which the nonlinear strain softening behavior of concrete after peak-stress can be considered is introduced in a thermodynamic formulation of the classical plasticity model. The return-mapping algorithm is used for the integration of the elasto-plastic rate equation and the consistent tangent modulus is also derived. For the modeling of non-localized zone in concrete under strain localization, a consistent nonlinear elastic-damage algorithm is developed by modifying the free energy in thermodynamics. Using finite element program implemented with the developed algorithm, strain localization behaviors for concrete specimens under compression are simulated.
A wavelet based approach is proposed for structural damage detection in beams, plate and delamination of composite plates. Wavelet theory is applied here for crack identification of a beam element with a transverse on edge non-propagating open crack. Finite difference method was used for generating a general displacement equation for the cracked beam in the first example. In the second and third example, damage is detected from the deformed shape of a loaded simply supported plate applying the wavelet theory. Delamination in composite plate is identified using wavelet theory in the fourth example. The main concept used is the breaking down of the dynamic signal of a structural response into a series of local basis function called wavelets, so as to detect the special characteristics of the structure by scaling and transformation property of wavelets. In the light of the results obtained, limitations of the proposed method as well as suggestions for future work are presented. Results show great promise of wavelet approach for damage detection and structural health monitoring.

Strip drawing of strain-hardening, viscoplastic materials with damage is analyzed by a rigid plastic finite element method. A process model is formulated using two state variables, one for strain hardening from slip dominated plastic distortion and the other for damage from growth of microvoids. Application of the model to steady state drawing is given via implementation in a consistent penalty finite element formulation. The predicted density changes as a result of void growth are compared to those from experiments reported in the literature. The effects of drawing conditions such as drawing speed and die angle on the mechanical property changes are studied.
To reduce the weight of the vehicle, the application of the high strength steel sheets to chassis parts is increased. High forming load is induced during the shearing process of steel chassis parts made of high strength steel, and the possibility of an eccentric load is increased depending on the product seating condition on the die, which decreases the stability and lifespan of the die. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element analysis with the continuum element was conducted using the damage theory for the cam-trimming process of the front lower arm. The structural analysis of the trimming die was performed with the forming load result obtained from the analysis, and the amount of deflection and the stress distribution of the die during the shearing process were evaluated for the confirmation of the tool stability. The shape of the weak region of the die was modified according to structural analysis and then the stability was confirmed with the finite element analysis. The analysis result showed that the possibility of tool failure during cam-trimming process was remarkably reduced, and the reliability of the proposed modified design was validated.
This study evaluates the local damage of a turbine in an auxiliary building of a nuclear power plant due to an external impact by using the LS-DYNA finite element program. The wall of the auxiliary building is SC structure and the material of the SC wall plate is high manganese steel, which has superior ductility and energy absorbance compared to the ordinary steel used for other SC wall plates. The effects of the material of the wall, collision speed, and angle on the magnitude of the local damage were evaluated by local collision analysis. The analysis revealed that the SC wall made of manganese steel had significantly less damage than the SC wall made of ordinary steel. In conclusion, an SC wall made of manganese steel can have higher effective resistance than an SC wall made of ordinary steel against the local collision of an airplane engine or against a turbine impact.
In this paper a 3-D continuum damage mechanics formulation for composite laminates and its implementation into a finite element model that is based on the layer-wise laminate plate theory are described. In the damage formulation, each composite ply is treated as a homogeneous orthotropic material exhibiting orthotropic damage in the form of distributed microscopic cracks that are normal to the three principal material directions. The progressive damage of different angle ply composite laminates under quasi-static loading that exhibit the free edge effects are investigated. The effects of various numerical modeling parameters on the progressive damage response are investigated. It will be shown that the dominant damage mechanism in the lay-ups of [+30/-30]s and [+45/-45]s is matrix cracking. However, the lay-up of [+15/-15] may be delaminated in the vicinity of the edges and at $+{\theta}/-{\theta}$ layers interfaces.
