In order to prevent illegal video copies, many video fingerprints have been developed. Video fingerprints should be robust from various video transformations and have high discriminative powers. In general, video fingerprints are generated from three feature spaces such as luminance, gradient, and DCT coefficients. However, there is a few study for the robustness and discrimination according to feature spaces. Thus, we analyzed the property of each feature space by video copy detion task with the robustness and the discrimination of video fingerprints. We generated three video fingerprints from these feature spaces using a same algorithm. In our test, a video fingerprint. based on DCT coefficient outperformed others because the discrimination of it was higher.

Fingerprints play a crucial role in the identification of potential suspects in criminal cases. However, determining the actual time, i.e., the time at which the fingermark was deposited, is challenging. Herein, we investigated the persistence and aging of fingerprints over time by observing the time evolution of latent fingerprints on a polystyrene box stored in a dark room. Fingerprint samples that were stored for up to two years could be detected with maximum accuracy using a black iron-oxide-based emulsion (black emulsion). To estimate the time of fingerprint deposition, fingerprint aging was studied by analyzing the lipid components of the fingerprints after their development. Cholesterol and squalene were selected as indicators of fingerprint aging, and their ratio was estimated to assess aging. In the case of fingerprint samples stored in a dark room for up to one month after deposition, the cholesterol/squalene ratio was approximately 0.01; it increased gradually to ≥ 0.1 over six months. A substantial reduction in the levels of cholesterol and squalene from the initial levels was also noted. Cholesterol and squalene were not detected after one year of storage. Thus, the extent of aging could be determined by analyzing the aging indicators for up to six months. Two cases that could cause error in the estimation of the fingerprint deposition time, namely, heating of the fingerprint sample before development and storage of the developed fingerprints in a dark room, were also investigated.

Knives are most frequently used as weapons in violent crimes. Criminals leave behind knife sheaths made of paper and tape at crime scenes. It is difficult to develop fingerprints using tape attached to a porous surface, resulting in the need to explore effective techniques for identifying fingerprints as well as the distribution of fingerprints on each surface, when evidence such as paper knife sheaths are found. In this study, 50 knife sheaths were prepared. The cyanoacrylate fuming (CA fuming) method was applied to develop fingerprints on the non-adhesive side of the tape, and a dual-purpose 1,2-indanedione/Zn (1,2-IND/Zn) reagent was used to separate tape from paper while simultaneously developing fingerprints on the paper. The fingerprints on the adhesive side of the tape were developed using Wet Powder Black®. Using the R statistical analysis program (The R Foundation for Statistical Computing), we used a heat map to indicate the location of fingerprints developed from each surface. More fingerprints were detected at the ends than in the center of the adhesive side of the tape, and although the non-adhesive sides of tape and paper did not present clear distribution patterns, many fingerprints were developed that had sufficient clarity for personal identification. The results of this study may be applicable for processing evidence when paper sheaths are found at crime scenes.
An innovative method for separating overlapping latent fingerprints, using laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) combined with multivariate analysis, is reported in the current study. LIPS provides the capabilities of real-time analysis and high-speed scanning, as well as data regarding the chemical components of overlapping fingerprints. These spectra provide valuable chemical information for the forensic classification and reconstruction of overlapping latent fingerprints, by applying appropriate multivariate analysis. This study utilizes principal-component analysis (PCA) and partial-least-squares (PLS) techniques for the basis classification of four types of fingerprints from the LIPS spectra. The proposed method is successfully demonstrated through a classification example of four distinct latent fingerprints, using discrimination such as soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) and partial-least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). This demonstration develops an accuracy of more than 85% and is proven to be sufficiently robust. In addition, by laser-scanning analysis at a spatial interval of 125 ㎛, the overlapping fingerprints were separated as two-dimensional forms.

A mixture of polyvinylpyrrolidone and 1,2-indanedione (PVP-IND) is known to be the best reagent for developing latent fingerprints deposited on the surface of a thermal paper. However, no study has evaluated whether PVP-IND could enhance fingerprints in blood deposited on the surface of thermal paper. Therefore, in this study, the ability of PVP-IND to enhance the fingerprints in blood was investigated. Furthermore, aqueous amido black solution, which is known to be the best reagent for enhancing fingerprints in blood deposited on the surface of thermal paper, was used for comparison with PVP-IND. Therefore, while enhancing the fingerprints in diluted blood, PVP-IND enhanced the quality of fingerprints compared to aqueous amido black solution. The ridge diffused when the undiluted fingerprints in blood were enhanced with PVP-IND because PVP reacted with amino acids in blood; however, amido black solution yielded better results. When treated with PVP-IND, it is presumed that the ridge diffused due to the reaction of PVP and amino acids contained in the blood.

Fingerprinting is a frontier technique that is the most frequently applied for human identification throughout the world. All citizens over 17 year old living in the Republic of Korea must be fingerprinted to obtain a certificate of resident registration. In Korea, for this reason, human identification through fingerprints has been far better developed and used efficiently both in crime scene investigation and in confirmation of an unidentified body. Scientific approaches have been made to accurately extract the metamorphosed fingerprints in various environments. Because most of the studies on fingerprinting have been accomplished with biometric techniques, researches on restoration of human dermal tissue and taking custody data after collecting fingerprints have been comparatively undermined. In this study, a newly innovative method for fingerprint extraction was developed using the polyester film with print powders and the high temperature-moisturizing method. Compared to the conventional fingerprinting method of paper with ink, minutiae numbers of fingerprints were greatly increased in polyester film with print powders after restoration of fingertips by high temperature-moisturization. This newly developed procedure would be an efficient fingerprinting technique which could be utilized in scientific investigation and in personal identification in the future. Furthermore, the new method for restoration and extraction of fingerprints are easy and inexpensive to practice for a number of human identification.
This paper proposes the method to extract a binary audio fingerprint by combining several base binary fingerprints. Based on majority voting of base fingerprints, which are designed by mimicking the fingerprint used in Philips fingerprinting system, the proposed fingerprint is determined. In the matching part, the base fingerprints are extracted from the query, and distance is computed using the sum of them. In the experiments, the proposed fingerprint outperforms the base binary fingerprints. The method can be used for enhancing the existing binary fingerprint or for designing a new fingerprint.

In this paper, a smart optical fingerprint sensor technology that is robust against faked fingerprints. A new lens and prism accurately detect fingerprint ridges and valleys that are needed to express a fingerprint's intrinsic characteristics well. The proposed technology includes light path configuration and an optical fingerprint sensor that can effectively identify faked fingerprint features. Results of simulation show the smart optical fingerprint sensor classifies the characteristics of faked fingerprints made from silicone, gelatin, paper, and rubber, and show that the proposed technology has superior detection performance with faked fingerprints, compared to the existing infrared discrimination method.
The personal identification procedure through the fingerprints is divided as the classification process by the type of the fingerprints and the matching process to confirm oneself. Many existing researches for the classification and the matching of the fingerprint depend on the number of the minutiae of the fingerprints and the flow patterns by their direction information. In this paper, we focus on extracting the singular points by using the flow patterns of the direction information from identification. The extracted singular points are utilized as a standard point for the matching process by connecting with the extracted information from the singular point embodied. The orthogonal coordinates which is generated by the axises of the standard point can increase the accuracy of the fingerprints matching because of minimizing the effects on the location changes of the fingerprint images.
Personal identification using fingerprints needs much calculational effort. Generally, there are various methods for fingerprint-based identification. In this paper, an identification method is proposed which is based on direction distribution of fingerprint ridges. An 8-directional Gabor filter bank is used for extracting the feature vector from the given fingerprint. Then, it is compared with those of registered fingerprints for matching. This method is simple and fast to implement because it uses the information of ridge directions only. An experiment on 532 fingerprints from NIST database and some other source shows its usefulness.
