  • The liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomic and lipidomic methodology has great sensitivity and can describe the fingerprint of metabolites and lipids in pork and beef. This approach is commonly used to identify and characterize small molecules such as metabolites and lipids, in meat products with high accuracy. Since the metabolites and lipids can be used as markers for many properties of a food, they can provide further evidence of the foods authenticity claim. Chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry is used to separate lipids and metabolites from meat samples. The research data usually is compared to lipid and metabolite databases and evaluated using multivariate statistics. LC-MS instruments directly connected to the metabolite and lipid databases software can be used to assess the authenticity of meat products. LC-MS has good selectivity and sensitivity for metabolomic and lipidomic analysis. This review highlighted the combination of metabolomics and lipidomics can be used as a reference for analyzing authentication meat products.

  • Beijing White Chickens laying larger eggs and smaller eggs were respectively used as parental individuals for mating to produce the F1 progeny and then the F1 progeny individuals mated to produce 125 individuals of the F2 progeny. Three bands associated with the egg weight performance were identified from DNA fingerprints of the 125 individuals generated with a bovine minisatellite probe BM6.5B. The simple linear correlation analysis showed that the coefficients of correlation between frequencies of the three bands (DB1, DB2 and DB3) and egg weights were -0.6, -0.6 and 0.9, respectively.

  • Culture-independent approaches, based on 16S rDNA sequences, are extensively used in modern microbial ecology. Sequencing of the clone library generated from environmental DNA has advantages over fingerprint-based methods, such as denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, as it provides precise identification and quantification of the phylotypes present in samples. However, to date, no method exists for comparing multiple bacterial community structures using clone library sequences. In this study, an automated method to achieve this has been developed, by applying pair wise alignment, hierarchical clustering and principle component analysis. The method has been demonstrated to be successful in comparing samples from various environments. The program, named CommCluster, was written in JAVA, and is now freely available, at http://chunlab.snu.ac.kr/commcluster/.

  • X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) is utilized for determination of polymorphism in crystalline organic materials. Though convenient to use in a laboratory setting, XRD is not easily adapted to in situ monitoring of synthetic chemical production applications. Near-Infrared spectroscopy (NIR) can be adapted to in situ manufacturing schemes by use of a source/detector probe. Conversely, NIR is unable to conclusively define the existence of polymorphism in crystalline materials. By combining the two techniques, a novel simultaneous NIR/XRD instrument has been developed. During material's analysis, results from XRD allow for defining the polymorphic phase present, and NIR data are collected as a fingerprint for each of the observed polymorphs. These NIR fingerprints will allow for the development of a library, which can be referenced during the use of a NIR probe in manufacturing settings.

  • To increase the folding efficiency of proinsulin, we have designed a series of mini-proinsulins having the central C-peptide region replaced with sequences forming reverse turns. These proteins were produced as fusion proteins in E. coli in the form of inclusion bodies. After isolation process of the sulfonated mini-proinsulins, the subsequent refolding experiments indicate that the mini-proinsulins, with non-native penta-peptide sequences inserted between two of the enzyme processing sites, show substantially increased folding yields compared with the proinsulin. The correct disulfide connections were verified by fingerprint analysis using Glu-C endoproteinase. These novel mini-proinsulins could be used for the study of folding mechanism of proinsulin.

  • Identification of compatible parental line is of great importance in introduction of useful characters to onion breeding program, beyond the severe hybridization barrier. Phylogenic analysis of Allium section Cepa was conducted through PCR by URPs, repeated sequences of A. fistulosum, and microsatellite markers. Totally 76 accessions originated from 21 countries were clustered into five groups at a 0.84-similarity level: group I;A. cepa and its wild relatives and A. cepa ssp. ascalonicum, group II; A. cepa ssp. wakegii, A. cepa ssp. proliferum and Samcheung-pa group III; A. fistulosum and A. altaicum, group IV; A. galanthum, group V; Soeckkori-pa. Samcheung-pa and Soekkori-pa, Korean local varieties, shared band type of both Cepa group and Altaicum group, indicating that those are derived from interspecific hybridization between A. fistulosum and A. cepa.

  • The molecular vibration-activity relationship in the receptor-ligand interaction of adenosine receptors was investigated by structure similarity, molecular vibration, and hierarchical clustering in a dataset of 46 ligands of adenosine receptors. The resulting dendrogram was compared with those of another kind of fingerprint or descriptor. The dendrogram result produced by corralled intensity of molecular vibrational frequency outperformed four other analyses in the current study of adenosine receptor agonism and antagonism. The tree that was produced by clustering analysis of molecular vibration patterns showed its potential for the functional classification of adenosine receptor ligands.

  • Recently, the biometric-based authentication systems such as FIDO (Fast Identity Online) are increased in mobile computing environments. The biometric-based authentication systems are performed on the mobile devices with the battery, the improving energy efficiency is important issue. In the case, the size of images (i.e., face, fingerprint, iris, and etc.) affects both recognition accuracy and energy consumption, and hence the tradeoff analysis between the both recognition accuracy and energy consumption is necessary. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient way to authenticate based on biometric information with tradeoff analysis between the both recognition accuracy and energy consumption in multimedia IoT (Internet of Things) transmission environments. We select the facial information among biometric information, and especially consider the multicore-based mobile devices. Based on our experimental results, we prove that the proposed approach can enhance the energy efficiency of GABOR+LBP+GRAY VALUE, GABOR+LBP, GABOR, and LBP by factors of 6.8, 3.6, 3.6, and 2.4 over the baseline, respectively, while satisfying user's face recognition accuracy.
