  • Composite propellant combustion is studied experimentally with systematic variation of particle sizes and mix ratios of coarse and fine APs. Considering the different modes of oxidizer-fuel flames in heterogeneous systems, the complex flame model is described to identify what combustion mechanisms are important under what conditions. The effects of AP particle size, ratio of coarse to fine AP, and pressure on burning rates are discussed in terms of qualitative theory of flame microstructure.

Combination of MCA and SHS for Material Synthesis

  • The combination of mechano-chemical activation (MCA)and Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) has widened the technical possibilities for both methods. For YBCO systems the investigation showed that a short-term MCA of initial powders before SHS leads to single-phase and ultra-fine products. A new technique for preparation ultra-fine high-temperature superconductors (HTS) of YBCO composition with a grain size d <1m is developed using combination of MCA and SHS. The specific feature of the technique is formation of the $YBa_2Cu_3O_7-$ crystalline lattice directly from an X-ray amorphous state arising as a result of mechanical activation of the original oxide mixture. The technique allows the stage of formation of any intermediate reaction products to be ruled out. X-ray and magnetic studies of ultra-fine high temperature superconductors are carried out. Dimension effects associated with the microstructure peculiarities are revealed. A considerable enhancement of inter-grain critical currents is found to take place in the ultra-fine samples.

  • Highly compressible Ni-Mo steels are attractive materials for PM due to high sinter density and ease of processing. Extra-fine Ni admixed PM steels have demonstrated improved mechanical properties and rolling contact fatigue resistance due to a more uniform microstructure and increased Ni diffusion during sintering. Sinter densities of single press single sinter XF Ni-Mo steels can approach $7.5\;g/cm^3$ at moderate compaction pressures. Leaner alloys based on extra-fine Ni powder are possible depending on the performance requirements of the PM steel part. Extra-fine Ni steels are particularly attractive for the growing market of high performance PM gears and sprockets.

Effect of Rolling Conditions on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Thick Steel Plates for Offshore Platforms (해양플랜트용 후판강의 미세조직과 기계적 특성에 미치는 압연 조건의 영향)

  • In this study, three kinds of steels are manufactured by varying the rolling conditions, and their microstructures are analyzed. Tensile and Charpy impact tests are performed at room temperature to investigate the correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties. In addition, heat affected zone(HAZ) specimens are fabricated through the simulation of the welding process, and the HAZ microstructure is analyzed. The Charpy impact test of the HAZ specimens is performed at $-40^{\circ}C$ to investigate the low temperature HAZ toughness. The main microstructures of steels are quasi-polygonal ferrite and pearlite with fine grains. Because coarse granular bainite forms with an increasing finish rolling temperature, the strength decreases and elongation increases. In the steel with the lowest reduction ratio, coarse granular bainite forms. In the HAZ specimens, fine acicular ferrites are the main features of the microstructure. The volume fraction of coarse bainitic ferrite and granular bainite increases with an increasing finish rolling temperature. The Charpy impact energy at $-40^{\circ}C$ decreases with an increasing volume fraction of bainitic ferrite and granular bainite. In the HAZ specimen with the lowest reduction ratio, coarse bainitic ferrite and granular bainite forms and the Charpy impact energy at $-40^{\circ}C$ is the lowest.

A Study on the Characteristics of Heat Treated ERW Weld Seam and the Technology of Seam Annealing (고장력 강재의 전기저항 용접부 열처리 특성 및 기술에 대한 연구)

  • To fine seam annealer capacity of through thickness seam annealing in terms of through thickness microstructure change with increased toughness and elongation leaving heat trace on it, high strength steel pipes of ERW with different thickness were tested in different seam annealing temperature measured on the outer surface of pipes. Annealing temperature and microstructure of the weld seam were changed through applied seam annealing condition. Toughness and tensile test with hardness and microstructure analysis were done on the annealed weld seam to fine its characteristics as a primary step and annealing characteristics according to different seam annealing condition. Through a study of annealed ERW weld seam characteristics and seam annealing technology, amount of electric power should apply in decreased manner to arranged inductors of annealer in the order of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, so on for proper seam annealing. For example of 15.4mm thick and 610mm outside diameter pipe, applied power for proper seam annealing is 600 -650kw at 1st inductor, 450 - 500kw at 2nd inductor, 200-250 kw at 3rd inductor of annealer during 10 - 12M/minute moving speed of pipe. Also, the penetration depth of heat trace along the thickness direction of weld during seam annealing can be estimated through the equation 17mm/kv$\times$voltage(kv) with the microstructure and hardness analysis of thick weld seam as well as study of seam annealing and comparison of cooling condition to CCT diagram of low carbon high strength steel. From this result, the difference between the technological applicability of full annealing condition based on phase diagram and full penetration of heat trace based on CCT diagram along the thickness of weld seam is discussed.

The Restoration Technology and Scientific Analysis of Bronze Mirror with Fine Linear Designs (청동잔무늬거울의 복원제작기술과 과학적 분석)

  • Bronze Mirror with fine linear designs in the bronze age shows the greatest alloy and casting skills of the day and presents the highest level of handcrafting and molding techniques. Lately, Lost-wax casting and sand-mould casting were used for the restoration of the national treasures of No. 141 and No. 143 Bronze Mirror with fine linear designs. Also the Principle Component Analysis, Microstructure Analysis, X-ray and SEM-EDS analysis were carried out on the restored Bronze Mirror with fine linear designs. Bronze Mirror that is made of sand-mould casting, hardly has a eutectoid and it is observed as a ${\alpha}$ dendrite. In contrast, Bronze Mirror that is made of lost-wax casting, the eutectoid has found through the ${\alpha}$ dendrite. As we compare lost-wax casting to the sand-mould casting through an analysis of restored Bronze Mirror, mostly, sand-mould casting has better castability and it seems that it brings a clear and equal Bronze Mirror as it has a low cooling rate. In this way, we are able to confirm that there is a big difference between the method by lost-wax casting and by sand-mould casting through an analysis of microstructure and restored Bronze Mirror. If such research will be continued, it will be an opportunity that investigates diverse methods of production techniques.

Effect of Nitrogen Volume in Ar-N2 Shielding Gas on Microstructure and Hardness of GTA Welded Pure Ti (순 Ti GTA 용접부의 미세조직과 경도에 미치는 Ar-N2 보호가스 중 질소량의 영향)

  • In this study, effect of nitrogen volume in the shielding gas of Ar-$N_2$ mixing gas on the bead shape, hardness and microstructure of GTA welds of 3mm thick Commercial Pure Ti was investigated. As the nitrogen volume increased, the welding current for full penetration was reduced and hardness in the fusion zone significantly increased compared with that of the base metal, but there is no difference in the hardness of HAZ. Microstructure in the fusion zone with pure Ar gas changed from equiaxed alpha of the base metal to serrated alpha. On the other hand, microstructure using Ar-$N_2$ mixing gas changed to acicular alpha. With the increasing of nitrogen content, the amount of acicular alpha increased and the size of that was fine.

  • Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a promising method for drastically enhancing the mechanical properties of the materials by grain refinement of metallic materials. However, inhomogeneous deformation during the SPD process results in the inhomogeneous microstructure of the SPD-processed material. We manufactured cylindrical copper specimens of 42 mm in diameter with ultrafine grains (UFG) using an equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to figure out the relationship between homogeneous microstructure and the number of the processing passes. Two specimens, which are ECAP-processed 4 times (4pass) and 6 times (6pass) each with Route Bc, are prepared for comparison of mechanical properties and microstructure. The results show that the mechanical properties of the two specimens (4pass and 6pass) are similar. Moreover, both the specimens show highly enhanced mechanical properties. The 4pass specimen, however, shows inhomogeneity in hardness distribution, while the 6pass specimen shows a homogeneous distribution. Microstructure analysis reveals that the 4pass specimen has an inhomogeneous microstructure with incompletely refined grain structure. This inhomogeneity of the 4pass specimen could be explained by the circumferential rotation during ECAP process.

Rolling of AZ31 Alloy and Microstructure of Rolled Plates (압연조건에 따른 AZ31 마그네슘합금판재의 변형거동 및 미세조직 변화)

  • The effect of warm rolling under various conditions on the microstructure and mechanical property was investigated using an AZ31 Mg alloy sheet. Several processing parameters such as initial thickness, thickness reduction by a single pass rolling, rolling temperature, roll speed, and roll temperature were varied to elicit an optimum condition for the warm rolling process of AZ31 Mg alloy. Microstructure and mechanical properties were measured for specimens subjected to rolling experiments of various conditions. Warm rolling of 30% thickness reduction per pass was possible without any side-crack at temperatures as low as $200^{\circ}C$ under the roll speed of 30 m/min. The initial microstructure before rolling was the mixed one consisting of partially recrystallized and cast structures. Grain refinement was found to occur actively during the warm rolling, producing a very fine grain size of 7 mm after 50% reduction in single pass rolling at $200^{\circ}C$. Yield strength of 204MPa, tensile strength of 330MPa and uniform elongation of 32% have been obtained in warm rolled sheets.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Mo-Si-N Coatings Deposited by a Hybrid Coating System (하이브리드 코팅시스템에 의해 제조된 Mo-Si-N 박막의 미세구조 및 기계적 특성연구)

  • In this work, comparative studies on microstructure and mechanical properties between $Mo_2N$ and Mo-Si-N coatings were conducted. Ternary Mo-Si-N coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel substrates by a hybrid method, where AIP technique was combined with a magnetron sputtering technique. Instrumental analyses of XRD, HRTEM, and XPS revealed that the Mo-Si-N coatings must be a composite consisting of fine $Mo_2N$ crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$. The hardness value of Mo-Si-N coatings significantly increased from 22 GPa of $Mo_2N$ coatings to about 37 GPa with Si content of 10 at.% due to the refinement of $Mo_2N$ crystallites and the composite microstructure characteristics. The average friction coefficient of the Mo-Si-N coatings gradually decreased from 0.65 to 0.4 with increasing Si content up to 15 at.%. The effects of Si content on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mo-N coatings were systematically investigated.
