  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Be addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and homogenization treated Al-Li-(Be)alloys. The ductility of as-cast Al-Li alloy was increased by the addition of Be and the fracture morphology was changed from brittle to ductile mode. Also, hardness and strength have been decreased by homogenization treatment. The morphology of eutectic structure which consists of ${\alpha}(Al)$ and ${\alpha}(Be)$ was changed from lammellae to spherical type by homogenization treatment. The shape of ${\alpha}(Be)$ phase has been revealed as hollow type by TEM observation. It consists of outer surfaces with well defined crystal facets and the core filled with ${\alpha}(Al)$. The microstructure of as-cast Al-Li-Be alloys showed coarse ${\delta}'$, fine ${\delta}'$, and coarse ${\delta}$ phases. The coarse and fine ${\delta}'$ phases were formed at Be-rich phase /matrix interfaces and in matrix, respectively. By homogenization treatment, the ${\delta}$ phase in Al-Li and Al-Li-Be alloys dissolved and the size of ${\delta}$ phase in Al-Li-Be alloys was finer than that of Al-Li alloy.

  • [ $MoSi_2$ ] alloys with Al, B or Nb were prepared by an advanced consolidation process that combined mechanical alloying with pulse discharge sintering (complex forming) to improve the mechanical properties. Their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The $MoSi_2$ alloys fabricated by complex forming method showed very fine microstructure when compared with the sample sintered from commercial $MoSi_2$ powders. Alloys made from powders milled in Ar gas had fewer silica or alumina phases as compared to their counterparts sintered from powders milled in air. In densification of the sintered body, addition of B was more effective than Al or Nb. Both Victors hardness and tensile test indicated that the alloy fabricated by the complex forming method showed better properties than the sample sintered from commercial $MoSi_2$ powders. The Al added alloy sintered from the powders milled in air had the superior mechanical properties due to the suppression of $SiO_2$ and formation of fine $Al_2O_3$ particles.

  • To investigate the effect of tungsten addition on mechanical properties, we prepared refractory (62χ)Nb-18Si-l00Mo-l0Ti-χW (χ=0, 5, 10 and 15 mol.%) in-situ composites by the conventional arc-casting technique, and then explored the microstructure, hardness and elastic modulus at ambient temperature and tensile properties at 1670 K. The microstructure consists of relatively fine (Nb, Mo, W, Ti)/sub 5/Si₃, silicide and a Nb solid solution matrix, and the fine eutectic microstructure becomes predominant at a Si content of around 18 mol.%. The hardness of (Nb, Mo, W, Ti(/sub 5/Si₃, silicide in a W-free sample is 1680 GPa, and goes up to 1980 GPa in a W 15 mol.% sample. The hardness, however, of Nb solid solution does not exhibit a remarkable difference when the nominal W content is increased. The elastic modulus shows a similar tendency to the hardness. The optimum tensile properties of the composites investigated are achieved at W 5 mol.% sample, which exhibits a relatively good ultimate strength of 230 MPa and an excellent balance of yield strength of 215 MPa, and an elongation of 3.7%. The SEM fractography generally indicates a ductile fracture in the W-free sample, and a cleavage rupture in W-impregnated ones.

  • In this examination, the effect of Sr addition and holding time on microstructure of Al-10.5wt%Si-2wt%Cu secondary die-casting alloy was investigated. Degree of undercooling was improved with increasing the Sr content in this alloy. Up to 0.02wt%Sr addition, acicular and lamellar eutectic structure was observed in the microstructure. Meanwhile, the eutectic Si was modified toward the fine fibrous form by increasing Sr content with more than 0.03wt% and holding time of the melt. The well- modified alloys showed decreased eutectic silicon size from 3.25 ${\mu}m$ to less than 0.8 ${\mu}m$. From these results, the optimal strontium content and holding time were identified on the Al-10.5wt%Si-2wt%Cu secondary die-casting alloy.

  • The effects of aging treatment sequence, specifically pre-aging and post-aging, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloys has been studied in comparison to symmetrically rolled specimens. In symmetrically rolled specimens, a straight-band precipitation distribution was observed, whereas asymmetrically rolled specimens exhibited a curved-band microstructure of fine precipitates. Notably, the asymmetrically rolled specimens displayed higher strengths. In the case of post-aging, the aging process occurred after rolling, and the dislocations generated during rolling acted as nucleation sites for precipitates during aging. This resulted in the formation of fine precipitates, contributing to improved mechanical properties compared to symmetric rolling. To enhance strength of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloys, asymmetric rolling proves to be more effective than symmetric rolling, with post-aging showing greater efficacy than pre-aging.

  • An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a three-phase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn2Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn2Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn2Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.

  • Strip samples of AA 3103 were deformed by Continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS). The CCSS process was designed to provide a repeated shear deformation in metallic sheet materials. CCSS led to the formation of characteristic shear textures comprising a pronounced{111}<uvw> orientations. The intensity of the deformation texture hardly increased with increasing number of CCSS passes. EBSD equipped in a FESEM with a high beam current revealed the formation of fine grains even after annealing for the recrystallization.

  • Changes in microstructure and damping capacity with aging time for solutionized Mg-Al alloy have been investigated. Discontinuous ${\beta}\;(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates form along the primary grain boundaries, the amount of which increases as the aging time increases. The hardness of the matrix with respect to aging time shows a typical "S" shape, indicating a generation of fine continuous precipitates in the matrix during the aging. The peak level of damping capacity is obtained after 1 hour of aging, over which the damping capacity becomes deteriorated continuously. The formation of optimum density of continuous ${\beta}$ precipitates with fine morphology which would act as pinning points for dislocation lines, might be responsible for the improvement of damping capacity.

  • Weldability of the TMCP steel manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process was investigated. For comparison, two other steel plates produced by different manufacturing processes were selected; normalized and controlled rolled. Tandem submerged arc welding with both side one run technique was carried out. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; TMCP steel having the lowest carbon equivalent shows the best combination of mechanical properties, not only in the base metal but also in the heat affected zone. In the HAZ, the accelerated colling effect imarted on the trengthis releved by the weld thermal cycles, and thus the strength of the welded joint decrease substantially accompanied with the fracture in the HAZ. On the other hand, not only the softening but the fine microstructure can preserve the high toughness of TMCP steel in the HAZ.

  • The effects of Si addition on the precipitation processes of in Al-Cu-Si alloy films were studied by the transmission electron microscopy. Deposition of an Al-1.5Cu-1.5Si (wt. %) film at $305^{\circ}C$ resulted in formation of fine, uniformly distributed spherical $\theta$-phase particles due to the precipitation of the $\theta$ and Si phase particles during deposition. For deposition at $435^{\circ}C$, fine $\theta$-phase particles precipitated during wafer cooldown, while coarse Si nodules formed at the sublayer interface during deposition. The film susceptibility to corrosion is discussed in relation to the film microstructure and deposition temperature.
