  • We investigate a supply chain arrangement where a manufacturing company outsources it sassmbly operations to two contract manufacturers. Each contract manufacturer is different in improvement capability : e.g., one is more capable than the other. This improvement capability is supposed to in-duce supply cost reduction that ultimately benefits the manufacturing company. Over time, the manufacturer has to decide how much it should outsource to each contract manufacturer and how much processde/assembled the semi-finished units should be when they re shipped back to the manufacturing company from the contract manufacturers. We employ the optimal control theory to answer the questions, and suggest numerical examples focused on the relationship among the optimal outsourcing amounts, contract manufacturer's improvement capabilities, and their capacity con-straints.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective cut generation method based on the Chvatal-Gomory procedure for a variable-capacity (0,l)-Knapsack problem with two general integer variables. We first derive a class of valid inequalities for the problem using Chvatal-Gomory procedure, then analyze the associated separation problem. Based on the results, we show that there exists a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm to solve the separation problem. By analyzing the theoretical strength of the inequalities which can be generated by the proposed cut generation method, we show that generated inequalties define facets under mild conditions. We also extend the result to the case in which a nontrivial upper bound is imposed on a general integer variable.

  • We examine the effectiveness of the conventional (Q, r) model in managing production-inventory systems with finite capacity, stochastic demand, and stochastic order processing times. We show that, for systems with finite production capacity, order replenishment lead times are highly sensitive to loading and order quantity. Consequently, the choice of optimal order quantity and optimal reorder point can vary significantly from those obtained under the usual assumption of a load-independent lead time. More importantly, we show that for a given (Q, r) policy the conventional model can grossly under or over-estimate the actual cost of the policy. In cases where a setup time is associated with placing a production order, we show that the optimal (Q, r) policy derived from the conventional model can, in fact, be infeasible.

  • Small business have very different characteristics from large business; notable, small business suffer from resource and capacity poverty. Without knowing the relative importance of limited resources and capacity in small business, it have limited practical contribution to e-business implementation success. This paper develops an exploratory resource-based model of e-business implementation for small business with 42 sample companies. The results show that three types of resource factors; IS/IT vender supports, the level of IS/IT knowledge, and financial support. The implication for research is that the resource-based view of the firm and the test an exploratory framework of resource factors are useful theories to ground future work on e-business implementation in small business.

  • This study aims to analyze the effect of local government capacities on the improvement of air pollution. For this purpose, we construct a dynamic panel model using a data set for air pollutants such as $SO_2$, $CO_2$, and particulate matters and the local governments' capacities for Chinese Provinces in the period of 2007 - 2014. The results show that of the three types of capacities, the organizational capacity measured by environmental personnel, environmental expenditures, and average size of environmental institutions is very important, while the institutional capacity and social capacity have a insignificant impact on the air quality improvement. Among the local government capacities, other than the organizational capacity, only the activity of environmental organizations, which is a social capacity, partially affects the improvement of air pollution. Regarding local conditions, vertical dependence of financial resources, GRDP per capita, and population density have a negative impact on improving air pollution. These findings provide implications for local governments in China as to what capacities they should improve to improve air pollution.

  • Construction of metro transportation infra is a large-scale project requiring tremendous financial resources. This study suggests operation method to use for rapid transit line existing infra such as Gyeongbu line and spare line capacity following second phase KTX construction. Reviewing various constraints of metro rapid transit operation, we found that the conditions for metro rapid transit operation are already satisfied in Daegu area, just like the case of Gyeongbu line in Seoul Metro area. Also, the evaluation of the economic feasibility of metro rapid transit operation in Daegu area shows that B/C is about 2.4, which implies that there is sufficient economic feasibility. According to the result of sensitivity analysis, the project is economically feasible unless the passenger demand decreases 15% and construction costs increases more than 70%. B/C is evaluated large because the utilization of already exiting infra lowers the initial cost. As one of mass transportation system of large capacity, metro rapid transit can generate significant spillover effect: It will strengthen competitiveness of metro area by connecting cities within the area and by extending one-day life zone of the area, to say nothing of the benefit of improving traffic condition. The construction of metro rapid transit network is necessary for the mass transportation system of Yeongnam area as well as Daegu area, and it may work as a starting point for uniting Daegu and Gyeongbuk and strengthening regional competitiveness.

  • In this paper, we try to analyze the likelihood of exercising the power of market dominance by certain generators in future power industry of Korea. Firstly, we estimated installed generation capacity and sales volume of electricity in Korea, based on 'The 3rd Long Term Power Plan' which was announced in December 2006. Secondly, we calculated HHI, an index showing the degree of concentration of an industry, and RSI, an index showing how adequate the supply of goods or services of an industry is, using Fast-Forward. Thirdly, assuming a major generator employs the strategy of withholding a part of its available capacity at a peak time, we simulated hypothetical movement of SMP over a certain period of time, which is compared with that obtained without assuming such strategy to generate Lerner Index. an index showing the degree of market power of a monopoly. Regulators, home and abroad, have not given much interest in analyzing the effect of market dominance that is likely to be exercised by certain players in the future. That said, this paper provides insight into developing methodologies of analyzing and mitigating such effect by proposing the above indices to gauge it. In addition, this paper also shows the potential impact of employing capacity withholding strategy on the financial account of a dominant generator.

  • Korea is utilizing geothermal resources mainly in the bathing and swimming facilities with very few applications for industrial processes or space heating. It is estimated that geothermal capacity and annual utilization are 36.2MWt and 761TJ/year as compared to global capacity and annual utilization of 15,145MWt and 190,699 TJ/year. RETScreen software is a user's friendly tool for analyzing the technical and financial pre-feasibility of potential Renewable Energy (RE) projects that promotes the use of RE applications through the capacity building of planners, decision-makers and industries for successful implementation of RE projects. Strong ties between Canada and Korean organizations such as Korean Solar Energy Society (KSES) and the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) exist for knowledge transfer about RETScreen. In this paper, an overview of RETScreen and its ground source heat pump (GSHP) model with a practical example of an existing project of a community hall in Canada are described to illustrate effectiveness of RETScreenin the implementation of RE technologies. The same community hall project is then evaluated hypothetically considering its location at Kangnyng, Korea. The main objective is to demonstrate how RETScreen GSHP model can also be utilized effectively for GSHP applications in Korea.
