  • A cylindrical pin fin with inside fluid is optimized based on fixed fin volume by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss from the fin and the pin fin radius for fixed fin volume is presented as a function of the fin length. Temperature variation of the fin with the variation of ambient and inside fluid convection characteristic numbers and fin base thickness is listed. The maximum heat loss at the practical fin length and corresponding optimum fin length and radius are presented as a function of fin base thickness, inside convection characteristic number, fin volume and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that the optimum pin fin shape becomes relatively fatter as the fin volume increases.

  • The sectioned-body morphometric characteristics of the diploid and triploid marine medaka, Oryzias dancena, of both sexes were examined to collect basic data on the significant differences between the diploid and triploid fish. Significant differences between the diploid and triploid fish in both sexes were observed in the body circumference anterior to the base of the pelvic fin, the body circumference anterior to the base of the anal fin, the body circumference anterior to the base of the dorsal fin, the area anterior to the base of the pelvic fin, the area anterior to the base of the anal fin, the area anterior to the base of the dorsal fin, the total height anterior to the base of the pelvic fin, the total height anterior to the base of the anal fin, the height anterior to the base of the pelvic fin, the height anterior to the base of the anal fin, the width anterior to the base of the anal fin, the belly thickness II anterior to the base of the anal fin, section shape 2-1, and section shape 4-1 (p<0.05). These measurements were greater in the triploid marine medaka of both sexes than those in the diploid marine medaka of both sexes, and they were also greater in the male diploid and triploid marine medaka than those in the corresponding female fish. Therefore, the sectioned-body morphometric dimensions were greater in the triploid males than those in the triploid females and the diploid fish in this study.

  • A pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on the ratio of heat loss to the maximum heat loss using a two-dimensional analytic method. The temperature profile along the normalized radius position in the fin is presented. For fixed fin outer radius, the optimum heat loss, fin length and efficiency as a function of fin base thickness, outer radius, convection characteristic numbers ratio and ambient convection characteristic number are presented. One of the results shows that the effect of fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number on the optimum fin length is remarkable.

  • In this study, fin surface temperature and frost properties, i.e., frost thickness and frost surface temperature on a heat exchanger, were experimentally analyzed with different fin thicknesses, fin sizes and thermal conductivities of fin. As a result, it is found that fin thickness and thermal conductivity of fin should be considered in order to design an efficient heat exchanger fin. Correlations of dimensionless average frost properties were proposed as functions of dimensionless air temperature, dimensionless fin base temperature, dimensionless fin thickness, absolute air humidity, Reynolds number and Fourier number. The correlations predicted well the average frost thickness with a maximum error of 10.5% and frost surface temperature with a maximum difference of $0.89^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The rectangular profile annular fin with fixed volume is optimized using 2-dimensional analytic method. For a base boundary condition, convection from fluid within the pipe to the inside wall of the pipe and conduction from the inside wall of the pipe to the fin base are considered. Heat loss from the fin tip radius is not ignored. The maximum heat loss, the optimum fin tip radius and the optimum fin half thickness corresponding to the maximum heat loss are presented as a function of fin base radius, Biot number over the fin surface and Biot number within the pipe. Results show 1) the maximum heat loss increases as both Biot number over the fin surface and Biot number within the pipe increase and as fin base radius decreases 2) the optimum fin thickness increases as Biot number within the pipe decreases or as fin base radius and Biot number over the fin surface increase.

  • A comparison of temperature distributions along the fin length coordinate between two different fin tip boundary conditions for a circular pin fin is made by using the one-dimensional analytic method. One tip boundary condition is the actual fin tip boundary condition and fin tip temperature is arbitrarily given for another fin tip boundary condition. The value of the fin base temperature is depend on the fin base thickness and fin radius. One of the results shows that the temperature distribution along the fin length coordinate for the actual fin tip boundary condition and that for the arbitrarily given fin tip temperature are the same if the arbitrarily given fin tip temperature and the fin tip temperature for the actual fin tip boundary condition are the same.

  • Optimization of the asymmetric trapezoidal fin with various upper lateral surface slope is made using a two-dimensional analytic method. For the fixed fin base height, the optimum heat loss, fin length and effectiveness are represented as inner fluid convection characteristic number, fin base thickness, fin base height, fin shape factor and ambient convection characteristic number. For this optimum procedure, the optimum heat loss is defined as 95% of the maximum heat loss from the fin. One of the results shows that optimum heat loss and effectiveness seems independent of the fin shape factor while optimum fin length decreases almost linearly as the fin shape factor increases.

  • The heat diffusion equation for an annular fin is analyzed by Laplace transformation. The fin has a uniform thickness, with its end insulated, and three different temperature profiles at the base such as step change, harmonic and exponential functions. The exact solutions for the temperature and heat flux of the fins are obtained with the infinite series. The series solutions converge rapidly for large values of dimensionless time, but slowly for small values. Therefore some approximate solutions are presented here to fine the temperature distribution and heat flux for small values of dimensionless time. Furthermore a simple approximate heat flux, .OMEGA.=1.13c.tau.$^{1}$2/ is found in the range of .tau. .leg. o.1/c for the exponential function at the base.

  • This study presents an analysis of periodic heat diffusion in an annular fin with uniform thickness. When the temperature of the fin base is changed in the form of a sinusoidal function, the exact temperature solution can be obtained by Laplace transformation in terms of the dimensionless parameters in the infinite series. Local heat flux and average heat flux, local fin efficiency and average fin efficiency were obtained. Particularly, the table of eigenvalues that are the indispensable condition in solving the heat transfer problem of annular fin in a transient state with convection phenomena at the fin edge is provided. The tables of heat fluxes and average heat fluxes, fin efficiencies and average fin efficiencies are also provided from the computed results. Also, substituting the variations of dimensionless parameters into the these exact solutions, the characteristics of these response are investigated.

  • This research aims to demonstrate the optimal geometrical design of splayed multiple cross-sectional pin fin heat sinks (SMCSPFHS), which are a type of side-inlet-side-outlet heat sink (SISOHS). The optimiser strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm2 (SPEA2)is employed to explore a set of Pareto optimalsolutions. Objective functions are the fan pumping power and junction temperature. Function evaluations can be accomplished using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Design variablesinclude pin cross-sectional areas, the number of fins, fin pitch, thickness of heatsink base, inlet air speed, fin heights, and fin orientations with respect to the base. Design constraints are defined in such a way as to make a heat sink usable and easy to manufacture. The optimum results obtained from SPEA2 are compared with the straight pin fin design results obtained from hybrid population-based incremental learning and differential evolution (PBIL-DE), SPEA2, and an unrestricted population size evolutionary multiobjective optimisation algorithm (UPSEMOA). The results indicate that the splayed pin-fin design using SPEA2 issuperiorto those reported in the literature.
