  • An efficient adaptive nonlinear compensator, based on a wavelet transform domain adaptive Volterra filter along with a modified escalator algorithm, is proposed to speed up the convergence rate of an adaptive LMS algorithm. In particular, it is well known that the e.g., slow convergence speed of an adaptive LMS algorithm depends on the statistical characteristics (e.g., large eigenvalue spread) of the corresponding auto-correlation matrix of the input vector. To solve such a convergence problem, the proposed approach utilizes a modified escalator algorithm and a wavelet transform domain adaptive LMS Volterra filtering technique, which leads to diagonalization of the auto-correlation matrix of the ...

  • This paper proposes a new nonlinear filtering algorithm that combines the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and the finite impulse response (FIR) filter. The proposed filter is called the unscented Kalman/FIR hybrid filter (UKFHF). In the UKFHF algorithm, the UKF is used as the main filter, which produces state estimates under ideal conditions. When failures of the UKF are detected, the FIR filter is operated. Using the output of the FIR filter, the UKF is reset and rebooted. In this way, the UKFHF recovers from failures. The proposed UKFHF is applied to indoor human localization using wireless sensor networks. Through simulations, the performance of the UKFHF is demonstrated in comparison with that of the UKF.

  • This study developed the health monitoring method of press process using the acoustic emission (AE) sensor and high-pass filter. Also, the AE parameters such as ring-down count and peak amplitude are used. Based on this AE signal, the AE parameters were acquired and was utilized to detect the crack of the specimen. Since the defect detection is difficult due to noise and low magnitude of signal, the signal noise and press operation frequency were checked through the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) and damped. High-pass Filtering data was applied to AE parameters to select effective parameters. By using this signal processing techniques, the proposed AE parameters could improve the performance of defect detection in the press process.

  • This paper describes a implementation of virtual interactive interview system. A hand motion recognition algorithm based on the particle filters is applied for this system. The particle filter is well operated for human hand motion recognition than any other recognition algorithm. Through the experiments, we show that the proposed scheme is stable and works well in virtual interview system's environments.

  • In this article, new microstrip slow-wave bandpass filters using open loop resonator loaded with inter-digital capacitive fingers is proposed. The filter features not only compact in size, but also exhibits spurious stop-band rejection. Filters of this type with elliptic function and Chebyshev response are demonstrated. There is good agreement between experimental and full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation results.

  • An efficient interpolation FIR filter structure for high-density and low-power electronic devices is proposed. The proposed structure is based on polyphase decomposition property and look-up table method. By computer-aided design simulations, it is shown that the use of the proposed method can result in reduction in the number of gates by 54% and can reduce power consumption by 9%.

  • A normalization approach to coefficient adaptation in the escalator(ESC) filter structure that conventionally employs least mean square(LMS) algorithm is introduced. Using Taylor's expansion of the local error signal, a normalized form of the ESC-LMS algorithm is derived. Compared with the computational complexity of the conventional ESC-LMS algorithm employs input power estimation for time-varying convergence coefficient using a single-pole low-pass filter, the computational complexity of the proposed method can be reduced by 50% without performance degradation.

  • This paper reports on the design of an object tracker that utilizes a family of unscented Kalman filters, one for each tracked object. This is a more efficient design than having one unscented Kalman filter for the family of all moving objects. The performance of the designed and implemented filter is demonstrated by using simulated movements, and also for object movements in 2D and 3D space.

  • This paper presents the high speed noise reduction processing system using the modified discrete fourier transform(MDFT) on the frequency domain. The proposed filter uses the linear prediction coefficients of the adaptive line enhance(ALE) method based on the Sign algorithm The signals with a random noise tracking performance are examined through computer simulations. It is confirmed that the fast adaptive digital filter is realized by the high speed adaptive noise reduction(HANR) algorithm with rapid convergence on the frequency domain(FD).

  • Image denoising as one of image enhancement methods has been studied a lot in the spatial and transform domain filtering. Recently wavelet transform which has an excellent energy compaction and a property of multiresolution has widely used for image denoising. But a transform based on human visual system is visually useful if an end user is human beings. Therefore, Gabor cosine and sine transform which is considered as human visual filter is applied to image denoising areas in this paper. Denoising performance of the proposed transform is compared with those of the derivatives of Gaussian transform being another human visual filter and of discrete wavelet transform in terms of PSNR. With three levels of various noises, experimental results for real images show that the proposed transform has better PSNR performance of 0.41dB than DWT and 0.14dB than DGT.
