  • In optical information technology, an electro-controllable Photonic Band Gap (PBG) in a photonic crystal (PC) material is potentially useful for the manipulation of light. Despite a great deal of research on PBGs, the reliable use of electro-active PBG material systems is restricted to only a few cases because of the complex and limiting nature of the structures involved. Here, we propose a PBG system that uses a liquid crystal (LC) polymer composite. The composite is made of nematic LCs (NLCs) embedded in polymeric helical networks of photo-polymerized cholesteric LCs (CLCs). The composite film shows a large field-induced reversible color shift over 150 nm of the reflection band, due to the reorientational undulation of the helical axis, similar to the Helfrich effect.

  • UHV-LCVD system was constructed for high quality silicon nitride thin film fabrication. This system consisted of a reaction chamber, an introduction chamber with sample load lock entry, a carbinet for gas manipulation controlling gas flow, a $CO_2$ laser and a Fourier transform mass spectrometer. Although the UHV-LCVD system construction was more sophisticated than low pressure CVD, highly pure thin films were fabricated by controlling gas mixing ratio and flow rate in ultra high vacuum surroundings.

  • The interaction of water molecules with solid surfaces has been a subject of considerable interests, due to its importance in the fields from atmospheric and environmental phenomena to biology, catalysis and electrochemistry [1,2]. Among various kinds of surfaces, a lot of theoretical and experimental studies have been performed regarding water on MgO(100), however, to date, there has been no direct observation of water molecules on MgO by scanning tunneling microscope (STM) as compared with those on metal surface. Here, we will present the direct observation and manipulation of single water molecules on ultrathin MgO(100) films using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) [3]. Our results rationalize the previous theoretical predictions of isolated water molecules on MgO including the optimum adsorption sites and non-dissociative adsorption of water. Moreover, we were able to dissociate a water molecule by exciting the vibrational mode of water, which is unattainable on metal surfaces. The enhanced residual time of tunneling electrons in molecules on the insulating film is responsible for this unique pathway toward dissociation of water.

  • We examine theoretically the properties of the force on Mie particles induced by evanescent fields at a system of multilayer films (including a metal film), at which the surface plasmon resonance is excited by a p-polarized plane electromagnetic wave. An expression of the surface plasmon-coupled evanescent fields produced in Kretschmann (or Sarid) geometry is expanded in terms of vector spherical wave functions, while multiple reflections between the Mie particle and the metal boundary are taken into account. The Cartesian components of the force on Mie particles by the evanescent fields are analytically formulated and numerically evaluated. The force components are increased by one or two orders of magnitude at metal boundaries over those at dielectric boundaries. As a result, we can confirm the possibility of stable manipulation or rotation of a finite-sized object by forces of surface plasmon-coupled evanescent fields.

  • For the well-controlled growing in-situ heavily phosphorus doped polycrystalline Si films directly on Si wafer by reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition, a study is made of the two step growth. When in-situ heavily phosphorus doped Si films were deposited directly on Si (100) wafer, crystal structure in the film is not unique, that is, the single crystal to polycrystalline phase transition occurs at a certain thickness. However, the well-controlled polycrtstalline Si films deposited by two step growth grew directly on Si wafers. Moreover, the two step growth, which employs crystallization of grew directly on Si wafers. Moreover, the two step growth which employs crystallization of amorphous silicon layer grown at low temperature, reveals crucial advantages in manipulating polycrystal structures of in-situ phosphorous doped silicon.

  • A one-step method for nanoscale patterning of silver ionic ink on a substrate is developed using a microscale, elastic mold deformation. This method yields unique micro/nanoscale metallic structures that differ from those produced using the original molds. The linewidth of these metallic structures is significantly reduced (approximately 10 times) through the sidewall deformation of the original mold cavity on a thin liquid film, as verified by finite element analysis. The process facilitates the fabrication of various, isolated and complex micro/nanoscale metallic structures with negligible residual layers at low cost and high throughput. These structures can be utilized for various applications, including optoelectronics, wearable sensors, and metaverse-related devices. Our approach offers a promising tool for manipulation and fabrication of micro/nanoscale structures of various functional materials.

  • Previous hardware devices to capture human motion have many limitations; expensive equipment, complexity of manipulation or constraints of human motion. In order to overcome these problems, real-time motion capture algorithms based on computer vision have been actively proposed. This paper presents an efficient analysis method of multiple view images for real-time motion capture. First, we detect the skin color regions of human being, and then correct the image coordinates of the regions by using camera calibration and epipolar geometry. Finally, we track the human body part and capture human motion using kalman filter. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can estimate a precise position of the human body.
