The Characteristics of Magic Realism Expressed in the Costume of Tarsem Singh Movies - Focusing on "The Cell" and "The Fall" - (타셈 싱(Tarsem Singh) 영화의상에 표현된 매직리얼리즘의 표현특성 - 더 셀(The Cell)과 더 폴(The Fall) 영화를 중심으로 -)

  • Magic realism, which originated in the culture of Central and South America, creates a fantastic fictional word by linking unrelated incidents using magical. The purpose of this study was to analyze Tarsem Singh's design characteristics that are based on magic realism in his movies, "The Cell" and "The Fall", and to highlight the artistic values appearing in the films. The research was conducted by observing the characteristics and concept of magic realism based on literature and preceding research, and discovering how Singh expressed these creatively and experimentally within the costumes in his films. The results of the study were as follows: Firstly, magical, legendary and symbolic characteristics appear within the fantasy of magical realism, and common techniques within film costuming include repetition of similar objects, solid silhouettes within scenes, and various decorative materials used for fantastic expression. Secondly, regarding ideality, the destruction of previous ideas and recreation of the present were found with materials and details used in film costuming to destroy previous ideas. Expressions of character through external decoration and depiction of living things as not living were also found. Thirdly, reiteration showed the coexistence of history and legend, reality and fantastic elements, and arrangement of opposing elements.

Activation and Hydrogen Sorption Characteristics of a Ti0.3Zr0.2V0.5 Alloy Getter (Ti0.3Zr0.2V0.5 합금게터의 활성화 및 수소흡수특성)

  • The lowest activation temperature of a commercial vacuum getter reported so far in literature was about $400^{\circ}C$. Recently, $Ti_{0.3}Zr_{0.2}V_{0.5}$ alloy has been reported to exhibit the activation temperature lower than $200^{\circ}C$ when they are prepared as thin film. In this study, the alloy was prepared as bulk form and its activation temperature and hydrogen sorption properties were investigated in compliance with a standard method. The alloy powder was prepared by arc melting and subsequent HDH(Hydride-DeHydride) process. The activation temperature of the alloy was estimated from the ultimate pressure-temperature curve and located between $150^{\circ}C\;and\;200^{\circ}C$. The hydrogen sorption speed measured by an orifice method was 0.895 liter/sec which is comparable to thin film of same composition.

The types and expressions of new media fashion film

  • A new form of media is changing the expression and content of fashion. In this paper, fashion films that have appeared since 2010 - when digital fashion communication was increasing - will be discussed and explored to consider how technological transitions in fashion media are changing the appearance and role of fashion. A literature review was conducted to derive characteristics, types, and expressive elements of new media fashion films, which were defined for this study as fashion films produced and distributed since 2010 using digital media. Films were categorized into three types: promotional, editorial, and independent fashion films. Furthermore, elements of the films were identified as fashion mise-en-scene, auditory structure, and content structure. Types and expressions of digital fashion images in 40 fashion films were analyzed according to these elements. The results showed that promotional fashion films maximize various narrative and sensory effects on fashion products, whilst editorial fashion films strengthen the role of entertainment. Independent fashion films expand the area of fashion and promote the diversification of fashion systems. Moreover, the results show that fashion films are not a secondary form of media that just expresses fashion; they provide a tool for the creation of new fashion content. New media fashion films promote the expansion of expressive spectra and boundaries, offering various multisensory experiences of fashion, and enhancing creativity and the aesthetic values of fashion.

QSEN Competencies in Pre-licensure Nursing Education and the Application to Cinenurducation (간호학생의 질 향상과 안전교육(QSEN) 역량개발을 위한 영화간호교육의 적용)

  • Purpose: The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses [QSEN] initiative group has identified six competencies (patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics) for pre-licensure nursing education along with related knowledge, skills, and attitudes for each competency. The purpose of this article is to illustrate a teaching strategy that uses films to demonstrate the QSEN competencies in undergraduate nursing students. Method: A literature review was conducted to define QSEN competencies, and six feature-length commercial movies were selected through a systematic process. We provided film titles and their synopses that can be useful in teaching the QSEN six competencies to undergraduate nursing students. Results: Patch Adams for patient-centered care, Wit for teamwork and collaboration, Lorenzo's Oil for evidence-based practice, Am$\acute{e}$lie for quality improvement, Blindness and The Island for informatics can be applied in nursing classroom practices. Conclusion: Establishing the connection between QSEN competencies and cinenurducation is novel, yet it would provide a unique opportunity for nurse educators seeking to overcome the challenge of better preparing future nurses. In future studies, additional films should be considered to enhance nursing educational strategies.

Synthesis of Few-layer Graphene Film on a Ni Substrate by Using Filtered Vacuum Arc Source Method

  • Graphene has generated significant interest in the recent years as a functional material for electronics, sensing, and energy applications due to its unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Much of the considerable interest in graphene stems from results obtained for samples mechanically exfoliated from graphite. Practical applications, however, require reliable and well-controlled methods for fabrication of large area graphene films. Recently high quality graphene layers were fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on nickel and copper with methane as the source of the carbon atoms. Here, we report a simple and efficient method to synthesize graphene layers using solid carbon source. Few-layer graphene films are grown using filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS) technique by evaporation of carbon atom on Ni catalytic metal and subsequent annealing of the samples at 800$^{\circ}$C. In our system, carbon atoms diffuse into the Ni metal layer at elevated temperatures followed by their segregation as graphene on the free surface during the cooling down step as the solubility of carbon in the metal decrease. For a given annealing condition and cooling rate, the number of graphene layers is easily controlled by changing the thickness of the initially evaporated amorphous carbon film. Based on the Raman analysis, the quality of graphene is comparable to other synthesis methods found in the literature, such as CVD and chemical methods.

Analysis of New Media Fashion Image Types in Fashion Films (패션필름에 나타난 뉴미디어 패션 이미지 유형분석)

  • In the era of new media, images hold an important position as episteme to express and convey ideas. Fashion films provide dynamic and unique fashion images, differentiated from prior fashion media as a representational tool for showing a realistic fashion image only; consequently, their production and spread are increasing rapidly as a new fashion media. This study identifies the meaning and type of fashion images in fashion films based on the concept of Deleuze's image that help discover distinctive characteristics of fashion films as a new fashion media of an expressive tool. Literature research was conducted on new media, concepts and types of images by Deleuze to analyze types of new media images. According to research, fashion image in fashion film is defined as a fashion event; consequently, three types of new media images are derived. As the result of the empirical study, fashion images in fashion films are classified by images of realistic movement, variable time, and virtual experience. The results of the consideration show that fashion films expressed fashion through temporality and narrative, senses, and diegesis. Fashion images of new media in fashion films portray fashion as a process that transcends reality and imagination.

Model development to design modified atmosphere packaging of Mandarin oranges

  • The aim of this study was to develop a model that could be used in the design of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for Mandarin oranges. Respiratory data at 5, 10, 20$^{\circ}C$ for mandarin oranges were gathered and altered for create useful respiration model. The maximum rate of oxygen uptake increased with increasing temperature. The packaging materials were conventional low density polyethylene and polypropylene with anti-fog, and anti-fungi treatments, and thickness was 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Permeability tests were performed to find their oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor transmission rate as increases in temperature. Test results were then converted to logarithm format for MAP modeling. Optimum gas composition in the package system for fruits were set according to literature and upper or lower limits of oxygen and dioxide established. To predict gas composition at certain storage time, weight of fruits, film thickness, film type, and other variables, respiration rate was studied at various storage conditions. The validity of the model was tested experimentally by observing actual atmospheric changes inside packages. It is concluded that the strategy developed is of use in designing dynamic gas exchange MAP systems, and also has potential uses in similar agricultural products.

Fracture toughness of amorphus SiC thin films using nanoindentation and simulation

  • Fracture toughness of SiC on Si thin films of thicknesses of 150, 750, and 1500 nm were measured using Agilent XP nanoindenter equipped with a Dynamic Control Module (DCM) in Load Control (LC) and Continuous Stiffness Method (CSM) protocols. The fracture toughness of the Si substrate is also measured. Nanovision images implied that indentations into the films and well deep into the Si caused cracks to initiate at the Si substrate and propagate upward to the films. The composite fracture toughness of the SiC/Si was measured and the fracture toughness of the SiC films was determined based on models that estimate film properties from substrate properties. The composite hardness and modulus of the SiC films were measured as well. For the DCM, the hardness decreases from an average of 35 GPa to an average of 13 GPa as the film thick increases from 150 nm to 1500 nm. The hardness and moduli of the films depict the hardness and modulus of Si at deep indents of 12 and 200 GPa respectively, which correlate well with literature hardness and modulus values of Si. The fracture toughness values of the films were reported as 3.2 MPa√m.

The Storytelling Rhythms of Chinese and Korean Films

  • In literature it is not only the meaning of words which matters, but also their texture matters i.e. their rhythm, colour and style are relevant and none of these natures can be reduced to an item of information. The texture is also important in film languages, especially the rhythm. In order to make the storytelling rhythm visible, a new concept of 'the Rhythm Chart Analysis Method (RCAM)' has been devised in this research and used for analysis. By analyzing original films and remakes in Korean and Chinese, one can find out that different countries have different storytelling rhythms i.e. the same story can be told in different rhythms. The central idea in Korean films is portrayed at the end, which is a typical characteristic of Korean films. And as the defining moment does not occur suddenly the audience can naturally get immersed into the story. But Chinese films communicate with the audience in a more direct way. It directly mentions characteristics of each actor in such a way that it is telling rather than showing. The information of the movie is given to the audience in the initial stages of the movie. Rhythm is as important as story and information. And through this we can find out the cultural differences from the different storytelling rhythms.

  • Stories have existed with the history of mankind along with drawings. Any genre of art that discusses the flow of time, such as literature, film, and play, cannot be free from narratives. The comics are not an exception. The comics tell the narratives with drawings from the cartoons in single blocks to the full-length series in tens of volumes. Nevertheless, there are not many studies that discuss the narratives in the comics. They may have been overlooked because they have been studied in the field of literature. However, I am envious of the field of film, which unravels the narratives with the same visual images, profoundly explores its own narratives and experimentally modifies and expands them into various levels. Therefore, I would like to make a narrative approach to the comics in this study. This study will discuss the non-narratives. It may sound ironic that the study of narratives will discuss the non-narratives, but the narratives cannot exist without the non-narratives. The non-narratives in the narratives compose the narratives in various ways. Therefore, Chapter II will discuss how the theory of narratives in literature classifies the narratives and the non-narratives as a theoretical background. Then, Chapter III will analyze the forms of non-narratives in Han Jo Kim's "The Texture of Memory" to discuss how the non-narratives of comics are composed, while Chapter IV will summarize the preceding studies. Finally, the narratives should be actively studied as it is an essential component of comics. I hope that this study can lay the foundation for more in-depth discussions of the narratives in the comics.
