  • The investigation of liquid fuel film on the cylinder liner is an essential to understand the engine-out hydrocarbon emissions formation in SI engines. In this research, two-dimensional visualization was carried out to investigate the liquid fuel film on the quartz liner in the optical engine. For this, the optical engine with hydraulic system was designed based on the commercial SI engine. The visualization was based on the laser-induced fluorescence with total reflection technique. Using a quartz liner and a special lens, only the liquid fuel film on the liner was visualized. With using this technique, the distribution of the fuel film on the cylinder liner was measured for different engine conditions and injection timing in the optical engine.

  • In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.

  • A numerical study for the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics of the evaporating tube with the films flowing down on both the inside and outside tube walls has been carried out. The condensation occurs along the outside wall while the evaporation occurs at the free surface of the inside film. The transport equations for momentum and energy are parabolized by the boundary-layer approximation and solved by using the marching technique. The calculation domain of 2 film flow regions (evaporating and condensation films at the inside and outside tube wall respectively) and tube wall is solved simultaneously. The coupling technique for the problem with the 3 different regions and the 2 interfaces of them has been developed to calculate the temperature field. The velocity and temperature fields and the amount of the condensed and evaporated mass as well as the position where the evaporating film is completely dried out are successfully predicted for various inside pressures and inside film inlet flow rates.

  • In spite of advances in image resolution and film contrast, check screen/film mammography remains one of diagnostic imaging modality where the image interpretation is very difficult. For the enhancement of film mammography, in this paper, dyadic wavelet transform is introduced. An unsharp masking technique is proposed and performed in wavelet domain. In addition, simple nonlinear enhancement and a denosing stage that preserves edges using wavelet shrinkage are computed into this technique. In this paper. we propose a new method for the gain setting of nonlinear enhancement and show result and comparison.

  • The various film cooling hole shapes have been proposed for effective external cooling of gas turbine blade. In this study, the film cooling effectiveness by three different hole shapes (cylindrical hole, $15^{\circ}$ angle anti-vortex hole, 30-7-7 fan-shaped hole) were examined experimentally. Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) technique was used to measure the film cooling effectiveness. The coolant to mainstream density ratio was 1.0 and three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 were considered. Results clearly showed that the effect of hole shape on the distribution of film cooling effectiveness. For the cylindrical hole case, the film cooling effectiveness decreased remarkably as the blowing ratio increased due to the jet lift off. Because of large hole exit area and low coolant momentum, the 30-7-7 fan-shaped hole case showed the highest film cooling effectiveness at all blowing ratio, followed by the anti-vortex hole case.

  • $Li_2PtO_3$ thin film electrodes, which might be possible candidate for the cathode materials for implantable batteries, were synthesized using an electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique onto a platinum foil substrate. Single phase $Li_2PtO_3$with a structure similar to layered $LiCoO_2$ structure were synthesized by spraying a precursor solution of $CH_3CO_2Li2H_2O$ in ethanol onto a Pt substrate at temperatures ranging from 200 to $400^{\circ}C$ followed by annealing at above $600^{\circ}C$. Lithium carbonate was the only major phase at temperatures up to $500^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of the Pt foil substrate and lithium carbonate disappeared at temperatures >$600^{\circ}C$. The volumetric capacity of the $Li_2PtO_3$ thin film synthesized using the ESD technique was approximately 817 mAh/$cm^3$, which exceeded that of $LiCoO_2$ (711 mAh/$cm^3$).

  • The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

  • Evaluating the impurity concentrations in semiconductor thin films using time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is an effective technique. The mass interference between isotopes and matrix element in data interpretation makes the process complex. In this study, we have investigated the doping concentration of phosphorus in, phosphorus doped silicon thin film on glass using ToF-SIMS in the dynamic mode of operation. To overcome the mass interference between phosphorus and silicon isotopes, the quantitative analysis of counts to concentration conversion was done following two routes, standard relative sensitivity factor (RSF) and SIMetric software estimation. Phosphorus doped silicon thin film of 180 nm was grown on glass substrate using hot wire chemical vapor deposition technique for possible applications in optoelectronic devices. Using ToF-SIMS, the phosphorus-31 isotopes were detected in the range of 101~104 counts. The silicon isotopes matrix element was measured from p-type silicon wafer from a separate measurement to avoid mass interference. For the both procedures, the phosphorus concentration versus depth profiles were plotted which agree with a percent difference of about 3% at 100 nm depth. The concentration of phosphorus in silicon was determined in the range of 1019~1021 atoms/cm3. The technique will be useful for estimating distributions of various dopants in the silicon thin film grown on glass using ToF-SIMS overcoming the mass interference between isotopes.

  • For an accurate measurement of the material behavior of small structures, a new optical experimental technique is proposed to measure the deformation. The test method uses the dual microscope that can measure the relative deformation of two adjacent regions. The magnified view is captured by CCD cameras and the relative deformation can be measured by the pattern matching and tracing method. Using this experimental technique, the deformation of solder joints in electronic packaging and the strain of the nickel thin film are measured.

  • A comprehensive theory of the spin coating technique has been reviewed and the basic principles and parameters controlling the process are clearly highlighted, which include spin speed, spin time, acceleration and fume exhaust. The process generally involves four stages: a dispense stage, substrate acceleration stage, a stage of substrate spinning at a constant rate and fluid viscous forces dominate fluid thinning behaviour and a stage of substrate spinning at a constant rate and solvent evaporation dominates the coating thinning behaviour. The study also considered some common thin film defects associated with this technique, which include comet, striation, chucks marks environmental sensitivity and edge effect and possible remedies.
