  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the buckling load of filament-wound composite towers for large scale wind-turbines using the finite element method (FEM). To define the material properties, we used both the effective property method and stacking properties method. The effective properties method assumes that a composite consists of one ply. The stacking properties method assumes that a composite consists of several stacked plies. First, a linear buckling analysis of the tower, filament-wound with angles of $[{\pm}60]$, was carried out using the two methods for composite material properties: the stacking method and effective method. An FE analysis was also performed for the composite towers using the filament winding angles of $[{\pm}30]$, $[{\pm}45]$, and $[{\pm}60]$. The FE analysis results using the stacking properties of the composite were in good agreement with the results from the effective properties method. The difference between the FEM results and material properties method was approximately 0~2.3%. Above the angle of $[{\pm}60]$, there was little change in the buckling load.

  • Both structural analysis and hydraulic test have been conducted to confirm the burst characteristics of filament wound solid motor case. Failure criteria have been defined with bursting above 150% of MEOP and failure in the cylinder. The results of analysis showed that filament fiber in the cylinder should be broken at about 2088psig. From a hydraulic test the same failure mode and the level of 2200psig of burst pressure have been proved. With these results, it is verified that a filament wound case meets burst requirements.

  • FRP has been used widely for insulator. FRP consists of fiber and resin. The fiber contributes the high strength and modulus to the composite. The fiber orientation in FRP has a great effect on the strength of FRP because the strength of FRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. In this study, FRP was made unidirectionally by pultrusion method. Outer part of the FRP was made by filament winding method to give fiber orientation to the FRP. And outer part of FRP was also made by wrapping method. The bending strength and bending stresses of FRP rods were simulated according to the winding orientation of glass fiber. The bending strength of FRP was also evaluated. The results of simulation and evaluation were compared each other to investigate main stresses which affect the fracture of FRP. The main stresses which had a great effect on the strength of FRP were shear stresses. Bending strength of the FRP was different with the winding angle. The bending strength of $15^{\circ}$ winded FRP was the highest.

  • A magnetic field calculation method for toroidal type winding which has circular section was developed. At first, the equation for magnetic field by single filament coil was extended using numerical integration to estimate the entire interesting region of solenoid, especially winding region itself. And then, the magnetic field by toroidal arrangement of solenoids was computed with a coordinate transformation of vector fields. The superconducting magnet with toroidal arrangement can be made up of several tens of solenoid type double pancake windings for some applications such as superconducting magnetic energy storage system(SMES). In this system, the field calculation on the high-Tc superconducting(HTS) tape itself is very important because the entire system can be reached to a fault by magnetic stress of conductor or the critical current of superconducting tape can be dramatically reduced under its self field condition. To make matters worse, 3-dimensional analysis is indispensable for this type of magnet and the most of commercial programs with finite element method can be taken too much time for analysis and design. In this paper, a magnetic field calculation method for toroidal type winding with circular section was induced.

  • Fiber placement system (FPS) carries out an advanced composites process which orients high strength reinforcing fibers in specific directions. The process includes wet winding, thermoset tape winding, thermoset prepreg placement and thermoplastic prepreg placement. FPS have the advantage of tape laying and filament winding with computer control and software. Using FPS can reduce costs, cycle times, structural weight, and handwork/rework when manufacturing composite parts. The sleeve extension is a part of the helicopter rotator systems. In this study, The sleeve extension composites were manufactured using FPS and tensile properties of this composites were characterized using universal testing machine(UTM).
