Active window system which can reduce the environmental noises, such as traffic noise and construction noise, from an open window into a room was proposed in the previous works. The key idea of the proposed active window system was that the control sources are approximately collocated with the primary noise source in terms of the acoustic power for global noise reduction throughout the interior room. Moreover, because it is important not to intrude into the living space in the building environment, no error sensors were used and an open-loop control method using control sources at the window frame and the reference sensors outside the room was used for the proposed system. The open-loop control gain was calculated by the interior room model assumed as the semi-infinite space, and the interior sound field was estimated by Rayleigh integral equation under the baffled window model assumption. However, windows with a finite thickness should were considered for the calculation of the open-loop control gain of the active window system since these are representative of most window cases. Therefore, the finite thickness window model based on the Sgard's model was derived and the open-loop control gain using the interior sound field estimated by that model was calculated for active window system. To compare the performance of these two models, a scale-model experiment was performed in an anechoic chamber according to noise source directions. Experimental results showed that the performance for the thickness window model is better than the baffled window model as the angle with respect to the perpendicular direction is larger.
Accurately simulating the wind field of large-scale region, for instant urban areas, the locations of large span bridges, wind farms and so on, is very difficult, due to the complicated terrains or land surfaces. Currently, the regional wind field can be simulated through the combination of observation data and numerical model using observation-nudging in the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). However, the main drawback of original observation-nudging method in WRF is the effects of observation on the surrounding field is fully mathematical express in terms of temporal and spatial, and it ignores the effects of terrain, wind direction and atmospheric circulation, while these are physically unreasonable for the turbulence. For these reasons, a spatial correlation-based observation-nudging method, which can take account the influence of complicated terrain, is proposed in the paper. The validation and comparation results show that proposed method can obtain more reasonable and accurate result than original observation-nudging method. Finally, the discussion of wind field along bridge span obtained from the simulation with spatial correlation-based observation-nudging method was carried out.

This study aims to analyze the mechanical buckling behavior of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) integrated with a one-parameter elastic medium and modeled as a Kerr-type foundation under a longitudinal magnetic field. The structure is considered homogeneous and therefore modeled utilizing the nonlocal first shear deformation theory (NL-FSDT). This model targets thin and thick structures and considers the effect of the transverse shear deformation and small-scale effect. The Kerr model describes the elastic matrix, which takes into account the transverse shear strain and normal pressure. Using the nonlocal elastic theory and taking into account the Lorentz magnetic force acquired from Maxwell relations, the stability equation for buckling analysis of a simply supported SWCNT under a longitudinal magnetic field is obtained. Moreover, the mechanical buckling load behavior with respect to the impacts of the magnetic field and the elastic medium parameters considering the nonlocal parameter, the rotary inertia, and transverse shear deformation was examined and discussed. This study showed useful results that can be used for the design of nano-transistors that use the buckling properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes(CNTs) due to the creation of the magnetic field effect.
An analytical solution method capable of determining the geometric configuration and developed tensile forces of mooring lines associated with fixed plate/pile or drag anchors is presented. The solution method, satisfying complete equilibrium conditions, is capable of analyzing multi-segmented mooring lines that can consist of either chains, cables, or wires embedded in layered seafloor soils. Centrifuge model tests and full -scale field tests were used to calibrate and validate the analytical solution.
We present a way of quantitatively characterizing solar active regions on the basis of their evolutionary paths. To determine characteristic properties of active regions with different sizes and configurations, we use a physics-based model to derive a relation between emerged magnetic flux and injected magnetic helicity (Flux-Helicity relation), the former of which gives scale information while the latter represents the magnetic field configuration of an active region. We demonstrate how this relation provides evolutionary paths of active regions and determines their characteristic properties, through a comparison with modeled active regions obtained from magnetohydrodynamic simulations.
Stress and deflection of Active Fiber Composite(AFC) embedded and/or attached composite structures are numerically investigated at the constituent level by the Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS). The DNS approach which models and simulates the fiber and matrix directly using 3D finite elements need to be solved by efficient way. To handle this large scale problem, parallel program for solving piezoelectric behavior was developed and run on the parallel computing environment. Also, the stress result from DNS approach is compared with that from uniform field model.
A two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (2D PIV) system in a towing tank is employed to measure a wake field of a very large crude oil carrier model with rotating propeller in self propulsion condition, to identify characteristics of wake of a propeller working behind a ship. Phase-averaged and time-averaged flow fields are measured for a horizontal plane. Scale ratio of the model ship is 1/100 and Froude number is 0.142. By phase-averaging technique, trajectories of tip vortex and hub vortex are identified and characteristic secondary vortex distribution is observed in the hub vortex region. Propeller wake on the starboard side is more accelerated than that on the port side, due to the difference of inflow of propeller blades. The hub vortex trajectory tends to face the port side. With the fluctuation part of the phase-averaged velocity field, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is also derived. In the center of tip vortex and hub vortex region, high TKE concentration is observed. In addition, a time-averaged vector field is also measured and compared with phase-averaged vector field.
We examined variations of the solar wind magnetic fields which are characterized by smooth field rotations with time scales of 2-7 hours, and identified the existence of two classes of structures. One is a small-scale magnetic flux rope, and the other shows clear characteristics of Alfven waves. In this study, we attempted to clarify fundamental characteristics of the structure of the second class. We have found that the observed features are basically described by the cylindrical structure consisting of the uniform background field and the circular torsional wave field propagating along the background field. We performed the least-squares fitting analysis for the observed rotational variations with a simple model of the torsional Alfven wave as described above. The fitted results show satisfactory agreement with observations and thus allow us to determine the structure of the region occupied by the torsional Alfven wave. Furthermore, the examination of ACE and WIND observations reveals several cases in which two spacecrafts encountered the same structure at different position and different times. Comparison of such cases provides further evidence that the observed rotational field variations are due to the torsional Alfven waves, and not due to elliptically-polarized Alfven waves.
In large scale superconducting rotating machine, HTS field coils are constructed with many stacks of single or double pancake coils connected in series. In spite of its higher thermal stability, HTS field coil experiences some quench, which results in some part of burn-out in the field coils. Thus in the view point of the HTS rotating machine field coil design and testing, it was very important to predict the possibility of quench occurrence in the designed field coils. In this paper, a HTS racetrack coil constructed with two single pancake coils and one double pancake coil was tested in LN2 and cooling by GM refrigerator. It is wound using the Bi-2223 tape. The experimental details and results are presented in this paper.
In the present study, the model-scale Propeller Open Water (POW) tests for the propeller of 176K bulk carrier and 8600TEU container ship were conducted through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In order to solve the incompressible viscous flow field, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RaNS) equations were employed as the governing equations. The γ-Reθ(gamma-Re-theta) transition model combined with the SST k-ωturbulence model was introduced to describe the laminar-turbulence transition considering the low Reynolds number of model-scale. Firstly, the flow simulation developing over a flat plate was performed to verify the transition modeling, in which the wall shear stresses were compared with experiments and other numerical results. Then, to investigate the effect of the model, the CFD simulation for the POW test was performed and the simulated propeller performance was validated through comparison with the experiment conducted at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).
