  • With the increasing of aging population, a lot of researches on monitoring systems for solitary senior citizens are under study. In general, a monitoring system provides a monitoring service by computing the information of vision, sensors, and measurement values on a server. Design considering data security is essential because a risk of data leakage exists in the structure of the system employing the server. In this paper, we propose a intelligent monitoring system for solitary senior citizens with vision-based security architecture. The proposed system protects privacy by ensuring high security through an architecture that blocks communication between a camera module and a server by employing an edge AI module. The edge AI module was designed with Verilog HDL and verified by implementing on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). We tested our proposed system on 5,144 frame data and demonstrated that a dangerous detection signal is generated correctly when human motion is not detected for a certain period.

  • With the development of the mobile industry and growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, a lot of research for AI processors which applicable to embedded systems is under study. When implementing AI to embedded systems, the design should be considered the restriction of resource and power consumption. Moreover, it is efficient to include a dedicated hardware accelerator in order to complement the low computational performance of the embedded system. In this paper, we propose an stand-alone embedded AI processor. The proposed AI processor includes a hardware accelerator that is dedicated to the distance-based AI algorithm and a general-purpose MCU that supports flexible programmability for application to various embedded systems. The AI processor was designed with Verilog HDL and verified by implementing on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).

  • Image processing is currently used in various fields. Among them, autonomous vehicles, medical image processing, and robot control require fast image processing response speeds. To fulfill this requirement, hardware design for real-time processing is being actively researched. In addition to the size of the input image, the hardware processing speed is affected by the size of the inactive video periods that separate lines and frames in the image. In this paper, we design three different scaler structures based on the type of line memories, which is closely related to the inactive video periods. The structures are designed in hardware using the Verilog standard language, and synthesized into logic circuits in a field programmable gate array environment using Xilinx Vivado 2023.1. The synthesized results are used for frame rate analysis while comparing standard image sizes that can be processed in real time.

  • The development of technology provides and increases security as well as convenience for humans. The development of new technology directly affects the standard of life thanks to smart home automatic control systems. This paper describes a door control, automatic curtain, home security (CCTV, fire, gas, safe, etc.), home control (energy, light, ventilation, etc.) and web-based smart home automatic controller. It also describes the use of ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) for automatic control of home equipment, a Multi-Axes Servo Controller using FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and PLC (programmable logic controller). Additionally, it describes the development of a HTML editor using web auto control software. The tab loading time (7 seconds) is faster when using ARM-based web browser software instead of Chrome and Firefox is used because the browser has a small memory footprint (300M). This system is realized by web auto controller language which controls and uses PLCs that are easier than existing devices. This smart home automatic control technology can control smart home equipment anywhere and anytime and provides a remote interface through mobile equipment.

  • Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are a revolutionary new type of user-programmable integrated circuits that provide fast, inexpensive access to customized VLSI. However, as the target application speed increases, power-consumption and wire-delay on interconnection become more critical factors during programming an FPGA. Especially, the interconnection of the FPGA consumes 65% of the total FPGA power consumption. A previous research show that if the length of interconnection is shirked, power-consumption can be reduced because an interconnection has a lot of effect on power-consumption. For solving this problem that reducing the number of wires routed, the three dimension FPGA is proposed. However, this structure physical wires and an area of switches is increased by making topology complex. This paper propose a novel FPGA architecture that modifies the three dimension FPGA and compare the number of interconnection of Virtex II and 3D FPGA with the proposed FPGA architecture using the FPGA Editor of Xilinx ISE and a global routing and length estimation program.

  • We investigate, in this paper, the use of FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) architectures for real-time processing of digital linescan camera. The use of FPGAS for low-level processing represents an excellent tradeoff between software and special purpose hardware implementations. A library of modules that implement common low-level machine vision operations is presented. These modules are designed with gate-level hardware components that are compiled into the functionality of the FPGA chips. This new synchronous unidirectional interface establishes a protocol for the transfer of image and result data between modules. This reduces the design complexity and allows several different low-level operations to be applied to the same input image ...

  • We set up a project to make spectrometers for single dish observations of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), a new future multi-beam receiver of the ASTE (Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment), and the total power (TP) antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Traditionally, spectrometers based on ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated circuit) and FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) have been used in radio astronomy. It is, however, that a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) technology is now viable for spectrometers due to the rapid improvement of its performance. A high-resolution spectrometer should have the following functions: poly-phase filter, data-bit conversion, fast Fourier transform, and complex multiplication. We wrote a program based on CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) for a GPU spectrometer. We measured its performance using two GPU cards, Titan X and K40m, from NVIDIA. A non-optimized GPU code can process a data stream of around 2 GHz bandwidth, which is enough for the KVN spectrometer and promising for the ASTE and ALMA TP spectrometers.
